STOCKTON HAMILTON WHITFJ IESSALYN E. WINDNAGEL WN MILITARY SERVICE President's Message I have been looking over the La Torre for 1917. Twenty-five years ago-and there's a picture of the young men drilling. NOW it's war again. We thought we could have world peace by Wishing for it. We assumed that everyone else was as peaceably inclined as we were. We've got to Win this war. Nothing else matters at the moment, but soon we must begin to think about the peace time to come. We must not blunder again. This time We must make it possible for all men everywhere to be free, for all men to make a living, for all. men to be happy. Short of that there Will still be war. ywkkw Student Council Don True, President Pete Kristovich, Vice President Carol McDaniel Ruth Wool, Secretary David Atkinson Douglas Curry Robert Hamill Lois Silver OUR PRESIDENT Iean Ellsworth Herb Petty Sec. christened HNormal School of the State of California, the name being representative of the nature and purpose of the institution -to train teachers for the elementary schools of this state. For many years a normal school it remained. Then, in recent years, the nature of the school changed mark- edly-and the change brought a change of name. nState C01- 116 lege it became, the new title representative of the vastly broad- ened character of the institution's program. Teacher training was no longer its sole objective, but only one of many aspects of a rich program of vocational instruction in the semi-protessional fields. The 1942 La Torre is proud to show pictoriqlly, on the following pages, various phases of this program. These youth concerts are pat- terned after those given by Dr. Walter Damrosch. Mr. Adolph Otter- stein, head of the department of music, conducted the concerts. 156 SYMPHONIC BAND Symphonic band's yearly concert was presented during the spring quarter to a large audience in Mor- ris Dailey Auditorium. The program included Carl Fried- man's HSlavonic Rhapsody, Richard Wagners Rustic Wedding Music, and Handel's Wctter Music. Mr. Thomas Eogom directed. 157 A CAPPELLA CHOIR The annual tour of the A cappella choir was eliminated this year because of the tire shortage. However, this organ- ization presented its annual concert for students and towns- people. They also sang at chapel and gave Ct concert at Stanford university. Mr. Wil- liam Erlendson is the director. 158 THEATRE ORCHESTA Indicative oi the progress of the San Jose State college music department, was the organization of a new theatre orchestra, under the direction of Edward Azhderian, senior music major. This group was organized in order to sightread through the inumerable smaller semi-classical selections that the students would otherwise never have the opportunity or experience of playing. These students, chosen from the musical elite of the campus, met twice a week without credit. WOODWIND CHOIR Another year of the unique combination of the San Iose State college Woodwind Choir under the direction of Thomas Eagan has established in the minds of the music lovers a deeper interest in the new type of woodwind choir that for the past decade Mr. Eagan has given his ablest efforts to standardize. All music played in the concerts presented by the 11-piece choir has been specially written and arranged by Eagan. All their concerts have been encouragingly suc- cessful and future standardization of this group nationally will bring added prestige to San Jose State college. 159 Row 1. VARSITY FOOTBALL TtRemember Pearl Harbor will live long in the minris of the football team and Coach Ben Winkelman. They were eating breakfast in a Honolulu hotel on that fateful morning of December 7 when Japanese airmen dropped their first loads of bombs on the city and nearby Pearl Harbor. The team had just arrived in Honolulu and were practicing for games with University of Hawaii and Willamette university. These games were never played. Coach Winkelman and the boys hustled down to the Hono- lulu police station to volunteer for police duty. They were sworn in immediately and worked until they boarded ship for the trip home. Parents and friends were pleasantly surprised on Christ- mas afternoon when the Lurline, with the team on board, docked in San Francisco. Here again the team showed that they were real Spartans by taking care of the many wounded on board. For this service Colonel Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy, wrote a personal letter of commendation to Dr. T. W. MacQuarrie praising the team. This was not the only excitement offered by the gridders. On November 15 the Golden Raiders came out on a fog- soaked field to battle Fresno State for the C.C.A.A. cham- pionship. The game ended in a tie score and thus both 184 Stuart Carter Ken Stanger Ken Bailey Bert Robinson Iohn Brown Bill Donnelly Don Allen Iack Galvin Francis Peregoy Paul Tognetti Fred Lindsey Wilbur Wool Bed Rabinm oauhaces fwo Fm? The curtain went up on the 1941 season September 20 against the barnstorming team from Texas A. 61 1. Two Spar- tan drives down the field proved the undoing for the Texans, however, and the game went to State. Final score was 14-0. The Elks charity encounter with Utah State came next. The Utah team was no match for San Jose; final score 34-0. With two wins to their credit, the Spartans entrained for Southern California to engage San Diego State in the first conference game of the year. Although the Aztecs had a rugged squad, the Spartans came back to Washington Square with a 20-0 win. , Texans have the reputation for being rangy and tough and that was just what the HCowboysH from Hardin-Simmons University proved to be. Although San Jose had the edge in yardage gained, the score book read 6-6 at the end of the game. Next came the game students and team had anticipated since the opening of the season. This was the skirmish with College of Pacific. By train, automobile, bus, airplane and thumb, fans descended on Stockton 1500 strong. For three quarters rooters and team saw a bunch of plucky Tigers fight back desperately. Still unbeaten, the Spartans lined up for the opening kickoff With the great Negro back, Marion Mot- ley, the only thorn in their side. Motley ran Wild and put the Wolfpack ahead 20-6. San Iose mustered a passing attack as the only means of Winning. This attack fell short by one point and the Wolves won 20-19 in the most exciting game of the year. The Spartan football team had not tasted the pangs of defeat since the opening game of the 1940 season. Hallowe'en was celebrated as the Spartans played host to Santa Barbara State, the other member of the C.C.A.A. The Gauchos were completely mystified by State's passing and running attack; San Jose 33, Santa Barbara 13. Sparta was really blitzed by University of San Francisco in the last mainland game of the year. State was bombed from all sides With long passes. Before the Golden Raiders could get started Senor Don has scored two touchdowns; they were able to stop the Spartan offensive. The Kezar scoreboard read U.S.F. 20, SIS. 0. San Iose's phenomenal record for the last five years should not be overlooked. State has won 55, lost 7 and tied 4 games. Trophies and awards are not car- ried from the field, and hero worship is a thing saved for masculine ob- jectives. The basis of the San Jose State college womans sports code lies in equality of opportunity and participation. Orchesis, women's honorary dance society, opened its entertainment program on campus this year by be- ing host to seven colleges at the Northern California Dance Sympos- ium. In the Spring, Orchesis pre- sented its annual program in the Little Theater, and two off-campus programs at the Scm Iose Womens Club and Stockton High School respectively. Iunior Orchesis is the apprentice shop for Senior Orchesis, and is open to all campus women. The Women's Swimming club cast fifty talented members in the annuaI swim extravaganza, Americana. The production rem for two nights in the college pool,c1nd was re- enacted as c: benefit for the Scm Iose Day Nursery at the John D. Crummey Estate in Scm Iose. Badminton scores highest in popu- larity on the women's sports pro- gram. Beginning golfers swing college- loaned clubs at cotton balls on the San Carlos turf, and the more eX- perienced intermediates trek to the Hillview Golf Course for longer rcmge. More than 300 women have en- tered the Robin Hood sport this year, and let fly their arrows at the cam- pus targets. A Columbia Round archery tournament concludes each quarter's practice. Tennis remains cm old standby, cmd is played off campus at the San Iose Tennis club. The only personal combat activity in women's sports is practiced on Washington Square in the fencing classes. Those masked beings of the quick and pointed touch are not warriors from Mars, but co-eds duel- ing Italian style with French foils.
