W 1 11 1 John Mark Briggs DEDICATION Here at San jose High there is a person whore some students might not know, but they are aware of his valuable contributions to school life. His work is done behind the scenes. The extra time he devotes for service to the school does not go unnoticed, for behind him there is left a job well done. His time is devoted to many phases of art. The duties he performs compose a long list of varied responsibilities - working with students in Bulldog Studio as their advisor, instructing art classes, and acting as art advisor for Bell Staff and H cralrl Staff. He is also head of Mass Media, which promotes publicity of various activities on campus. In each of the duties he performs, he is known for his quick solution of problems and calmness in difficult situa- tions. He is enthusiastic about whatever he under- takes. In view of his invaluable contributions to San - lh4 ' jose High School, we, the editors of the 1962 year- book, dedicate our BELL to Mr. john Mark Briggs. Lynne Crawford Senior officers Lead a spmveu emo., Entering as sophomores, we were made welcome by the upperclassmen at the Sophomore Welcome Dance entitled Sophomore Splash. At the height of the football season, we were thrilled over the Big Bone Game victory score, of 27-7. The Christmas Formal carried out the theme of Silver Bells, and the Bulldog Capers of 1960 presented the warm, wonder- ful show of Damn Yankees. Spring semester blossomed with our Sopho- more Hop titled Two Moods. We closed our first year with the sopho- more picnic. In the fall of '60 we retumed to campus as juniors. Again the Big Bone remained at home with a victorious score of 20-6 over cross-town rival Lincoln. Winter Whirl themed the Christmas Formal for that year. The junior Prom, Wonderland by Night, was held off campus for the first time in many a year. Guys.and Dolls proved a great show for Capers of 1961. Our junior picnic brought the school year to a close once again. As mighty seniors,','we entered with high hopes of fulfilling plans for a great senior year. The Bone stayed home for the fifth consecutive year with an exciting score of 14-13. XVe spent an evening of enchantment dancing at the Winter Formal, Woodland Mist. Our class explored college prospects by visiting local campuses during the spring semester. Inter-. national,.Festival themed our first Color Day in three years. We were relaxed and carefree dressed in casual attire for Senior Dress Day. The newly-built Elks' Club' was the scene of our unforgettable Senior Ball titled Never Say Goodbye. As one of our last activities together, Bolado Park proved an excellent setting for our senior picnic. It has included my Senior activities, but better yet: a wonderful year with the students at San Jose. XVhen my visit last summer to Santiago, Chile, was concluded, I looked back on the days spent there with fondness and joy. It was a summer which always will hold a place in my heart, for it taught me that other people of the world are the same as you and me. It also gave me the hope that because of this similarity, there might be a better understanding of each of these peoples in the world. I will always be grateful to the American Field Service and all the people who made it possible for my trip abroad and for the chance to gain this knowledge - and, in turn, to acquaint you with the people of Chile. Sincerely, Q :l 0 JEAN JOHNSON Every year one of Hlgl1,S stu- main office of the American Field dents is chosen to represent our Service. As of this date the two school abroad The representative 'finalists are Ed Laelergue and is chosen from the finalists by the Nick Carter. Dear friends: One year has gone by since I first came to San jose High, a year which brought for me many interesting and exciting moments. I know that I owe a lot to the American Field Service for making it possible for me to have spent this time in San jose, but I also know that I owe very much to you students and faculty members of San Iose High, who made the last year the most interesting one I ever spent in my life. You made me feel welcome from the first minute ong you were so friendly to me at all times and tried to help me wherever you could that I already knew after a few days: I wasn't a stranger any more, but a member of San jose High School. And although I shall not see you again after this year fwho knows?D, believe me, I never shall forget you. During the past year I learned quite a bit: I learned to like pizza and hamburgers, and I leamed to like the Twist. I learned to like milkshakes and hot dogs, and I- leamed to like baseball games. But, what is most important, I Ieamed that it is possible for people of many nationalities and religious backgrounds to live together in peace and to be friends. I do not know how to express my gratitude toward youg maybe you can understand what I feel if I just simply say: THANK YOU. - Your friend, 83 -f I , ff' X ,K ,AN lx W 1....r ML Butch Lagasca Co-editor Judy Yuki Co-editor 'C'TI?. !-Y Beverly Ozawa Managing Editor Kimiko Wakimoio Business Manager Annual compiles Mr. Gerald Turnoy Advisor sun Sharpe leona Billings Artis, Ass't. League championships reward C's and Dis San Jose High School can well be proud of the accomplishments of this year's C and D basketball champions, Coach jack Avina remarked. These teams not only won championships, but also finished the schedule'without defeat. A true champion must stand the test of courage and fortitude under adverse conditions. The D team, the 110's, this year met the challenge every game and responded to it like champions. Our Cis, the l20,s, had easier sledding until the Washington game. At the start of the fourth quarter, IVashington led by 12 points. Our two top scorers and rebounders were on the bench because of fouls. Girls Athletic Association promotes These girls of seventh period sports r demonstrate their abilities in badminton. 1 I . iii! Girls of CAA exhibit their skills in various sports by participating in play days and in competition with other schools in the area. They work for points to achieve their blocks, their stars, and their chevrons. The girls have more time to learn about the different sports and they also take time out to learn the rules and how to officiate the games. I The GAA program also includes the aquacade held each spring. The girls practice diligently during seventh period and after school. Part of the prepara- tions for this activity by the girls is in the designing and making of their own costumes, props, and routines. , y f i 115 as N , , ,X if ..,.,. .,,, -s f. fl f - ag.. e Miss Joy Krafzke Miss Mariorie Hinson Mrs. Janet Axline abilities in sports Row 1, left to right: Joyce Richard, Dorothy Holdavvay, Terry Lopez, Sharon Williams, Linda Brown, Diana Wells, Diane Holmes, Cheryl Lett, Pamela Barry, Pat Eagan, Elma Quirin, Kimiko Wakirnoro, Janice Uchida.
