MQ, QT ff T' PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENT BODY OF SAN JOSE HIGH SCHOOL SAN JOSE OAUFORNIA llllllllflllll You hold in your hands a 1940 Bell. Yes-the same name, the same size, the same activities, but different because it is a book filled with the spirit of new ideas. Early last fall the stall met, our plans were laid, and the work was begun. As the work progressed, we became more convinced that We had something important to do. We believed sincerely in the students of San Jose High, in their own activities, and in the qualities expressed by the leaders of those activities. Perhaps our desire to be original has led us to be radical, perhaps we have overdone somethings, yet we feel that in some ways we have accomplished our purpose. In that spirit We have created this Bell, and in that spirit we offer it to you. I 4 +UfUlEHllUN+ A school is known by its students, and students are known by their leaders. Leaders are important people, and they deserve to be. Yet, too often we take our dances, rallies, games, clubs, and publications for granted. Too often we fail to recognize the work that has been done, and the time that has been spent. We of San Jose are fortunate in having a group of students who, by their tireless efforts during the past year, have success' fully guided our student life. Thus, because we have come to realize the important work they do, because We feel that too often their accomplishments go unheralded, and because we see in them students at their best, We dedicate this Bell of 1940 to the LEADERS of San lose High School. l -Q HUIVIINISWHUN + HWY f77wz,fm,6AQclZ 5 . MURDOCK Principal ADMIN Mr. Murdock - he needs no introduction for his cheery smile and Hello Bill have made him known to every student. Close to the student's interests and modern in his ideas he is, nevertheless, firm in his desire to teach us order. Often he is more easily found in the corridors and classes than in his oflice. In this, we believe, lies his success, for we respect and admire him most of all because We feel he is one of us. 10 111 HOWARD LATHRCP Vice-pri nci pal 'Miss O'NEIL We give you our dean of girls, patient and kindly, who makes our Girls' Leaguc a succcss and gives an incentive to cvcry high school girl. MR. LATHRUP When planning a career, choosing a course, or just making out new programs, we may depend upon Mr. Lathrop, our registrar, to give us the advice we need. MR. SHIPP To his many duties in guidance and curriculum, our vice principal brings dependable execution and a dash of that personal touch. MR. DENT In his first year as dean of boys, Mr. Dent put over many successful Boys' League activities. His technical crew has provided a whole year of classroom programs through movies and transcriptions. Because he makes himself one of them, Mr, Dent is a favorite of all the boys. Besides representing the Herald and Bell in council meetings, the commissioner is chair' man of the Publications committee which passes on the editorial and financial policies of both publications. Publication activities included attendance ata number of conferences, foremost of which was tlze annual three day meeting held at the University of California. Looking after the interests of three varied, but nevertheless important departments, the Commissioner of General Activities finds enough work to keep himself busy. Debate, music and drama are represented by this commissioner. Debate and music awards are presented to students entering into these activities. Embryonic actors and actresses are honored by election to the honorary drama society, Mask and Scroll. Not direct- ly connected with student government, but doing valuable work was the Lip Reading Class under the direction of Mrs. Lillian Dorsey of the Departnent of Vocational Rehabilitation. lwvg X QM 19 mms il . is BARBARA MAAS FALL COMMISSIONER GIRLS' FINANCE JIM NEILSON FALL COMMISSIONER BOYS' FINANCE BOB STATON SPRING COMMISSIONER BOYS' FINANCE JEAN KUMLE SPRING COMMISSIONER GIRLSY FINANCE HEADQUARTERS - THE BANK THE ACCOUNT IS EXACTLY - JIM NEILSON AT TI-IE CONTROLS Working in close conjunction with Mr. Glasson, financial advisor, the finance com' missioners each semester prepare a school budget.
