.: Flag! - The early Spanish settlers found a land of sunny valleys, hemmed in by rugged mountainsg a danger- ous land-wild, beautiful. California. They came-knowing that this land of savage splendor was made less frightening only by the Missions. They came-knowin that only where was heard the Mission Bell was there safety and peace. The tolling of the Mission Bell heralded a new civilization. Here was the first sign of the Califorf nia that was to be, the symbol of the birth of the California we know. Courage that is an heritage from the daring of the pioneers, tempered by the hardships of their migration across the pathless plain and over the heaven searching Sierra. Callantry that is a gift from the Spanish Don, that earlier pioneer. Laughter that lingers in the hearts of all those who are descended from the carefree rider of the rancheria, the pleasure seeking miner, the rollickf ing Irish railroad builder. Serenity that is born of a land grown old under the guardianship of the Franciscan Father and that haven of Peace, the Mission. To this Spirit of the Californian we dedicate this edition of the San Jose High School Bell.
