We call him, Friend He has been in turn teacher of mathematics, Second Vice Principal and Sophomore Registrar, and finally, First Vice Principal and Registrar. To students in all the departments of the school he has served for many years as classroom inf structor and educational counselor. To lvlr. Howard Lathrop, our friend through' out these years, this Bell, a record of the activif ties for the year of 1938, is dedicated in grateful appreciation. FOREWORD Something is attempted, something is accom' plished every hour of every school day. ln keeping a record of this school year, significant moments, no matter how unimportant, will stand out in the memory of every high school student. To have an account of just one of those days is to have an ac' count of them all through the associations they will bring, because the classes, faculty, and clubs follow the same schedule all year 'round ln record' ing a day at school we present a complete picture of San ,lose High School as an educational and social organization-one day, one year: 193768. 'L J TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION FOREWORD IN APPRECIATION BELL STAFF THE SCHOOL DAY MORNING FACULTY SENIORS NOON STUDENT GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS AFTERNOON CLUBS ATHLETICS SNAPS EVENING HONOR SOCIETIES MUSIC AND DRAMATICS ADVERTISEMENTS ist 0 IN APPRECIATION In compiling any record of a year of school activities there are many people who, though not officially recognized as part of the staff, are inf dispensible to the publication of such a record. The Bell of 1938 is no exception to this, and the stall wishes to take this opportunity to express ap' preciation to those people for their assistance dur' ing the past year. It would be futile to attempt to list all of these silent partners, but special mention should he given to Miss Eleanor Pitman and Mr. Frank Glasson, advisers to the Bell staff, and to Miss Josephine Roose, Miss Emilie Reiil, Miss Charlotte Simpson, Miss Virginia Burks, Miss Elgie Ugier, Mrs. Louise Gomez, Mr. Forrest Murf tlock, the gymnasium coaches and the teachers. A. L. standings. At the laeginning of their season, Coach Gene Arnolds gridders were hailed as the hsst miittrlal in the schools histary, and they prohahly were, hut something caused the Builpups to get o.'er-confident to the extent that it cost them the league championship. They only lost one ganie, and that was to a powerful Burlingame eleven to the tune of 32 to fl. Up to that contest, the locals were the hest in the league, hut the visitors took advantage of the San bloseans' conceit hy playing real hall. The siiphs realized from the result of that tilt that they would really have to dig in and they did! The following week. the Bullpups made a spectacular stand against a strong Palo Alto team. whom they held to a scoreless tie. This was a moral victory for Arnolds hoys. for the Vikings were using iuniors and seniors heside their sophs. From then on the localis hrand of hall improved to the point where they could have taken the hest in the league. It was just that one had week that the sophs were offg it was a good lesson.
