HUTCHINS FIREHOUSE FIVE PLUS TWO San Jose City College annually presents an outstanding group of educators and entertainers on campus in the Special Evening Assembly Series. The student-sponsored programs, held in the men's gymnasium, are open to the general public as well as to students. This year's eight-program series was highlighted by the appearance of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. The United Nations delegate and former First Lady, who has been described as the First Lady of the World ' spoke on, Is America Facing World Leadership? First assembly of the school year, in October, featured the popular Four Freshmen. The Freshmen have won a number of polls proclaiming them the top jazz vocal group in the land. The second program starred Basil Rathbone in An Evening with Basil Rathbone, in which the famed actor presented recitations from a number of plays and poems. Mahalia Jackson, called Queen of the Gospel Song, entertained here in March, singing from her wide repertoire of Gospel music which has made her the foremost vocalist in that field. Next in the series was the dixieland music of the Firehouse Five Plus Two, composed of Walt Disney artists, writers, and directors. The final three programs were lectures by prominent men in education. Dr. Robert Hutchins, former Chancellor of the University of Chicago, spoke on Basic Issues of a Free Society; Nobel prizewinning chemist Dr. Linus Pauling of the California Institute of Technology talked on, Steps Toward World Peace, and semanticist Dr. S. I. Hayakawa of San Francisco State College lectured on Understanding Modern Art '
