The group works for cordial relationships between the student press and members of the profession and hopes to unite in a congenial fraternity those students who show their interest in journalism and San Jose City College by their unselfish service and high grade point average. This year Beta Phi Gamma sponsored Ladies Man on Campus, with the proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Yearly function of the organization is to promote the San Francisco Light Opera Series. chess club The Chess Club is open to all students who have an interest in chess. Each semester a chess tournament is held to determine which player can play the most games by elimination. AWS is interested in promoting fellowship among San Jose City College women, sponsoring social affairs, and opening opportunities to coeds to be leaders in campus life. This year the club sponsored such activities as: The Christmas Tea, Women's Fall Social, AWS fall fashion show and hostessing the Alta California Conference held at S.J.C.C. campus. sigma eta toeta Sigma Eta Beta, cosmetology club, whose name means skilled hands of beauty, have been responsible for many activities such as: cheering the children in a tuberculosis ward at the Santa Clara County Hospital and collecting books and small items to make the children .more comfortable. The girls held an installation dinner and sponsored a candy sale on campus. The proceeds went for baskets for the needy on Thanksgiving Day. A contest is held yearly in which members compete for awards in hair cutting and styling.
