Coach Patricks for the first year was the moderator of the club and he really produced a turnout of the Block M members. Keeping the students involved is a hard job, but Coach Patricks accom- plished this. This year the Block M club- ,made a large amount of money by parking cars, planned a trip to Santa Cruz for a day. As a donation to the sports department, the club if finance permitted, is going to donate to the sports department video equipment to record sporting events at SJM. Block M is concerned with keeping tradition continuing at SJM and keeping good athletes participating on the best equipped and coached team in the Valley. This year Block M truly proved this. The assassination of Lebanese President-elect Bashir Ge- mayel ignited the explosive situation between Lebanon and lsreal. lsreali troups occupied Lebanon in order to uproot the PLO and Yasir Arafat. Bei- rut feel in late June and the PLO finally began to evacuate Lebanon, but the horror was not over. On Sept. 16, a massacre of Palestinian refugees be- gan. The boodbath was lead by chris- tian militia fores and left B28 dead and Q91 missing. Recently, the Israeli gov- ernment has been found responsible for the massacre. The Begin adminis- tration is now in jeopardy. Peace, Please As the arms race reached a feverish pitch this year, protests, demonstra- tions, and anti-nuke rallies were held all-over the U.S. and Western Europe. The Catholic Bishops held a confer- ence and sent their message, con- demning nuclear weapons, to the White House. Resident Reagan is de- termined to continue to build up US. defence in spite of the protests. Dislo- gue with the USSR has been slowed due to the death of Leonid Brezhnev, who was replaced by Yury Andro- pov. Pain Killers The cyanide poisoning of Extra Strength Tylanol capsules left seven Chicago residents dead. Copycat in- cidents across America were responsible for at least five more deaths. Famous au- tomaker, John DeLorean was charged with participating in a multi- million dollar cocaine scandal. The drug money was supposedly to save his failing auto empire. John Hinkley Jr., accused of shooting President Rea- gan, attempted suicide by over dos- ing on supressant drugs. Storm Breaks After losing the race for the Senate, Gov. Edmond G. Brown handed over the reigns to California's new Govenor, George Deukmqian. Fresno Mayor Dan Whitehurst also sought a place in the Senate, but did'nt make it past the primaries. All winter long, California has been pounded by the worst storms in memory. The coastal region suffered most as the tide washed away piers and houses, and flood waters de- stroyed property. People The Royal Family was once again in the limelight with the most cele- brated birth in recent history. Prince William was born to Princess Diana and Prince Charles and became the hier to the British throne. In Washington, Alexander Haig re- signed as Secretary of State and was replaced by George Shultz. Goodbye The world said goodbye to some very special people this year. Ingrid Bergman died of cancer, Princess Grace Cl4ellyD was killed in an auto mobile accident, After winning his first Oscar for his perfor- mance in On Golden Pond, actor Henry Fonda died. Former First Lady Bess Tru- man passed away as did Watergate prosecuuor, Leon Jaworski. Strike One The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers four games to three. On August 27, Rickey Henderson of the Oakland A's stole his 119th base of the season, setting a new record. The football season got off to a floundering start with a 57 day play- er's strike, which reduced the schedule from 16 games to 9. lnspite of the set back, the Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl by trouncing the Miami Dol- phins 27-17. Locally, our own Fresno State Bulldogs won the Cal. Bowl, and the S.J.M. Panthers took an undefeated first in their league. Elsewhere, the winningest coach in football history, Paul William CBearD Bry- ant died shortly after retiring. However, the old outshown the new in 1982 as the last of the true Mod bands said goodbye. With the release of their latest album, lt's Hard , The Who announced their break up and launched a forty date North American tour. On December 16 in Canada, The Who performed their final concert. The concert was broadcast live via satalite to pay T.V. viewer nation wide. Clash Now Since 1977, The Clash have been try- ing to successfully break in to America. Their punk rock beginnings made them favorites in the U.K., but their politically sensitive music brought them frustration, not fame, here in the States. Their latest album, Combat Rock , hit the top ten, bringing them recognition at last. U.K. Romance The newest sounds of the year were brought about by the New Romantic trend in England. This highly dancable music is typified by bands such as Hu- man League, Duran Duran and Hair- cut One Hundred. Straight from the outback, Austrailian band Men at Work rose to the top with their hit singles Down Under , and Who Can It Be Now . Clam Up Around California and Fresno, musical happenings included, the US Festival, a three day concert in San Bernadino fea- turing bands such as The Cars, The Police, Talking Heads and Fleetwood Mac, The Who and the Clash appeared in San Fransisco, and LA., and The Police and Santana Played at the Cal Expo. Missings Persons, The Motels, Split Enz, Triumph, Billy Squire, and Saga brought their shows to Fresno. One of the hottest acts ever to come out of Fresno, The Clams, began recording and touring the West Coast. Fresno State now has their own radio station, 90.7, KFSR, the Progressive Alter- native. Spoced Out The movie industry saw on of its most profitable years in 1982, and much of that success can be attributed to film maker Steven Spielberg turned out two box office smashes, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial won hearts worldwide and taught an important lesson in friend- ship and the value of life. Spielberg's urban nightmare flick, Poltergeist , dealt with restless spirits and the super- natural. Deborah Winger and Richard Gere starred as an unlikely couple in the years most popular love story, An Officer and a Gentleman . Notables After ten years of production, Gandi was released. The epic movie told the story of the peaceful Indian leader, and raked it in at the Golden Globe Awards. Tootsie , with Dustin Hoff- man and Jessica Lange and Kiss Me Goodbye , with Sally Fields and James Caan came across as two of the years funniest movies. Other popular flicks included H48 Hours with Richard Pryor, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The World According to Garp . M 'A 'S 'H ' Things were relatively quiet on the tube this year except for one event. After eleven years, the Korean War ended and the members of the 4077th M 'A 'S 'H ' went home. The final 2 112 hour episode saw Haw- keye coping with a mental break- down, Father Mulchaey lose his hear- ing, and Klinger marry a Korean girl. lt is highly unlikely that this hole left in the Monday night format will be filled by such a quality show. The most expen- sive event in television history, The Winds of War , was presented in Feb- ruary on NBC.
