IGNATI US I l REV. BROTHER V. IGNATIUS, PRINCIPAL, F.S.C. I hoped, I hoped in the Lord, and He bent down to me and heard my cry. And He drew me out of the pit of destruction, out of the filthy mireg and He planted my feet upon a rocky He made firm my steps. Psalm 39, U. I, 2. We, the graduates of the class of San Joaquin Memorial High School of 1956, take singular pleasure in dedicating this year book to you, Brother V. Ignatius. Your spirit of magnanimity and devotedness to duty have impressed us during the past six years. Your unshaken qualities of faith and zeal have been an influencing force on us during our high school years. For your kindness, your iustice and your goodness, we thank you . . . sincerely. Thou lovest justice and Hatest iniquity, therefore God, thy God has annointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Psalm 44, v. 8. pe. - , Y- -.4 ,- s . Just before the half with the score I8 to 9 in favor of the Bullpups, Tony Albany blocked a punt and Bill Hayes scooped up the ball and raced 25 yards for the score. Memorial sewed up the game on John Zaver's two touchdowns, one a l9 yard dash up the middle, and the other on an l8 yard pass from Mike Pratt. Player of the week was Pat King. SMJ, 7, Reedley, 20. Reedley hosted the SJM team and suc- ceeded in regaining the prized Panther Trophy. The Pi- rates offense was highly effective in the first half, but Memo- rial's defense buckled down in the second half, however it was not enough to pull the game out of the fire. SJM's lone tally came in the last quarter when Mike Pratt threw an l8 yard TD pass to Bill Hays. SJM, 77 Edison, 28. Spirit alone was not enough to beat the big and hard-charging cross-town rivals. The Tigers were just too large for the smaller but ever fighting SJM team. Memorial's lone TD came in the fourth period when Ernie Hindman zig-zagged l6 yards up the middle for the score. Playing outstanding ball for the Panthers were Mike Allard, Bob Lango, and Ron Wathen, who was the player of the week. SJM, 65 Sanger, 'l2. lt was a heartbreaker. The highly touted Sanger squad barely squeezed out a win over the visiting SJM contingent who showed an amazing amount of spirit and fight throughout the entire game. On gaining possession of the ball S.lM attempted to punt out but the punt was blocked and a Sanger man picked up the ball for the score. Late in the game SJM once again held the Apaches from scoring on a goal line stand and on gaining the ball the Pan- thers fumbled and Sanger recovered. On the next play the Apaches scored from the l yard line. A tough one to lose. SJM, 13, Dos Palos, 20. Highly rated Dos Palos whipped SJM in the opening Shasta League game on the loser's field. ln the first set of downs the Broncos marched right down the field for the ini- tial score of the game. Memorial bounced right back to score when Ray Fimbres caught a pass from Mike Mathieson for six points. Early in the fourth quar- ter with the Broncos leading 20 to 6, Jess Alarcon recovered a Dos Palos fumble on their 24 yard line. Six plays later Mathiesen punched the ball over the goal line. Memorial threatened to score late in the game but their advance was thwarted. swf' Ernie Hindman-HB Ray Fimbres-HB 3 Bill Schuh-End P E S .1 Tony Albany-End Q Q I ,. The Pan- thers scored over 300 yards while hold- ing the Grizzlies, who didn't even cross midfield, to a total of minus 2 yards. Ernie Hindman started the scoring parade by scampering 22 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter. Mike Mathiesen then threw a TD pass to Rich Hidalgo. Early in the second period Ray Fimbres pushed the ball over the goal line from the three. A few minutes later Mathiesen threw a 20 yard pass to Bill Hays in the end zone. With one minute remaining in the first half John Zaver caught a pass in the end zone for a 32 to 0 lead. In the third quarter Mathiesen threw an- other TD pass to Hidalgo. Two more TD's were scored in the fourth quarter, one on Haskell tackles Edison man as lango moves in. a 5 yard iaunt by Manuel Colmonero, and the other on a pass from Tim Montgomery to Hidalgo. SJM, 137 Washington, 30. Washington defeated Memorial on the winner's field on a warm afternoon. Early in the game Washington turned a SJM fumble into a TD. Memorial's usually tight team iust couldn't get to- gether after that, and before the afternoon was over Washington had turned three more fumbles into easy scores. With 2 minutes left in the game SJM finally caught fire. Tim Montgomery threw a 35 yard pass to Mike Mathiesen for the score. One minute later Montgomery again threw a TD pass to Mathiesen for the final score of the game. SJM, 127 Chowchilla, 13. The final game of the season turned into another heartbreaker for the Memorial squad. While SJM completely dominated play throughout the game, league leading Chowchilla capitalized on a few breaks to come out on top. Early in the second quarter Ray Fimbres bulled 14 yards up the middle for six points. Moments later San Joaquin threatened to score as they advanced to the 3 yard line of the Red- skins but a Chowchilla man intercepted a flat pass and raced 97 yards for a TD. Chowchilla scored again to lead by a 13 to 6 score at halftime. On the second play of the final period Mike Mathiesen scooted 11 yards to paydirt. Three minutes later Ray Fimbres raced 80 yards upfield to the Redskin 9 yard line. Memo- rial failed to score and Chowchilla took possession of the ball. SJM again threatened to score but time ran out as they were on Chowchilla's 16 yard line.
