THE NEW ERA . . . The year 1957 will see many changes in this world of ours. It has been designated as the International Geophysical Year, in which scientists of all countries will pool their talents in the common search for knowledge of the universe about us. Man is ever seeking to discover many things through his re- search into the realms of nature. Some of those things are an explanation for the ordei ' ed paths of the stars and atoms; a better understanding of the wonders of creation that surround us; and, finally, the very purpose of Man ' s existence. Along with these things, the scientist endeavors to improve the social standards of his fellow beings, and to advance the character and ability of the human race as a whole. In accordance with this onward movenient, steps have to be taken in the education of today ' s youth, who will be the researchers and improvers of their own following generations. Our own school has been chosen as a mark of progress in the growth of Houston. It has been proposed that San Jacinto will become a truly cosmopolitan school, drawing students from all parts of the city. We have already come part of the way on this road to the future by becoming a four-year school, the second in the city, this year. But it is only the beginning. San Jacinto will equip the citizens of tomorrow as ably as she has ah ' eady furnished her many graduates with the most important of all a school ' s gifts — a good foundation in the living of a life as 2 an American and citizen of a true democracy.

MESSAGE FROM THE STAFF Each year in planning the com- ing yearbook the staff strives to be original and to make El Oroso one of the best yearbooks in Hous- ton. This year we believe we have accomplished what we set out to do. True, we broke a few old, out- dated traditions, but to make any- thing advance in quality one must discard a few relics. Two long-standing traditions discarded this year are the baby pictures and the cartoons in the junior and senior class sections. Since the cartoons were the only art in the book, they have been replaced throughout with original art-work division pages created by the able staff artists. The baby pictures were eliminated because good reproduction of the snapshots rarely oc- curs and this creates unattractive pages. We are very proud of our cover, designed also by the artists, and of the division pages, for each helps to carry out the theme we chose — the Universe. As far as members of the staff know, this particular theme has never been used in any other yearbook. Our job is now finished. We ' ve gained much by put- ting together your book — a sense of responsibility, a new measure of efficiency, many fond memories, and a few gray hairs. We ' ve enjoyed it. Now we proudly present to you your 1957 El Oroso — to explore and cherish in the years to come because it will bring back memories of your beloved San Jac.
