A ' ' ,- ' . : o;n!iif ' ' ' ' THE NEW ERA . . . The year 1957 will see many changes in this world of ours. It has been designated as the International Geophysical Year, in which scientists of all countries will pool their talents in the common search for knowledge of the universe about us. Man is ever seeking to discover many things through his re- search into the realms of nature. Some of those things are an explanation for the ordei ' ed paths of the stars and atoms; a better understanding of the wonders of creation that surround us; and, finally, the very purpose of Man ' s existence. Along with these things, the scientist endeavors to improve the social standards of his fellow beings, and to advance the character and ability of the human race as a whole. In accordance with this onward movenient, steps have to be taken in the education of today ' s youth, who will be the researchers and improvers of their own following generations. Our own school has been chosen as a mark of progress in the growth of Houston. It has been proposed that San Jacinto will become a truly cosmopolitan school, drawing students from all parts of the city. We have already come part of the way on this road to the future by becoming a four-year school, the second in the city, this year. But it is only the beginning. San Jacinto will equip the citizens of tomorrow as ably as she has ah ' eady furnished her many graduates with the most important of all a school ' s gifts — a good foundation in the living of a life as 2 an American and citizen of a true democracy. MESSAGE FROM THE STAFF Each year in planning the com- ing yearbook the staff strives to be original and to make El Oroso one of the best yearbooks in Hous- ton. This year we believe we have accomplished what we set out to do. True, we broke a few old, out- dated traditions, but to make any- thing advance in quality one must discard a few relics. Two long-standing traditions discarded this year are the baby pictures and the cartoons in the junior and senior class sections. Since the cartoons were the only art in the book, they have been replaced throughout with original art-work division pages created by the able staff artists. The baby pictures were eliminated because good reproduction of the snapshots rarely oc- curs and this creates unattractive pages. We are very proud of our cover, designed also by the artists, and of the division pages, for each helps to carry out the theme we chose — the Universe. As far as members of the staff know, this particular theme has never been used in any other yearbook. Our job is now finished. We ' ve gained much by put- ting together your book — a sense of responsibility, a new measure of efficiency, many fond memories, and a few gray hairs. We ' ve enjoyed it. Now we proudly present to you your 1957 El Oroso — to explore and cherish in the years to come because it will bring back memories of your beloved San Jac. Svs ' ■.% i( ,l ' - - IXc m ■jfSa X V. Thoughtful dedication to humanitarian ideals and concern for others will guide you along the way. Seek limitless knowledge; experience aesthetic appreciation of the great beauty in the world; know that love of God and your fellow man is the key to the completeness of life. — W. BRYAN SHAVER DEDICATION TO MISS MARGARET WOODWARD When the time came for the staff of El Oroso to decide upon the person who was to be honored by having the 1957 book dedicated to them, there was only one who was even considered — our sponsor, Miss Margaret Woodward. It has been she who has given us our inspirations, and a gentle push in the right direction when needed. Without her, planning a yearbook would have been utterly impossible, and it is to her now that we extend our deepest thanks and in her name that we dedicate this, the 1957 El Oroso. •- • ' tv mm •%, J :.7:• : ■( ' i- . «„«. - ' • ♦ $ ' if -t .. This class is the only one of its kind in the city of Houston, and the students come from all over the city. Their par- ticipation in all student activities is ex- cellent — especially their record of at- tendance. On these pages are pictures of these students occupied in typical activities. The candidates give out lolli- pops and bubble guin with hopes that they won ' t be forgotten at voting time. To become a candidate for cheerleader a student must have a C average and G in conduct. Along with good grades, the cheerleaders must be energetic, strong-lunged, and have endurance to be able to stand up under the long hours of practice and participation in all the pep rallies and sports events. Basketball is emphasized in P.E. classes to develop the finer athletes. San Jacinto is favored by having a fine coach, Jesse Martin, who, in the years he has been here, has turned out many outstanding players. Whether San Jacinto has an excellent or a poor season, throughout the year the student body has been the ardent follower and inspiration for the team to play its best. Mr = SPRING SPORTS Spring sports come late in the school year and are not often men- tioned. Although slightly praised, these sports are widely participated in by the student body. Many boys, in the past years, have brought credit to San Jacinto in city and state competition, and have bene- fited themselves through physical improvement and scholarships. We are unable to present the accom- plishments of this year ' s teams, but we are looking forward to another successful spring season. 51 SPORTS rtr . MRS. JORDAN MISS SCOTT MISS BRUSH ABOVE: Ugh! say the girls in fifth period modern dance. The girls in the physical education classes learn the skill and technique needed in playing all sports. The sports in which the girls participate are volley- ball, basketball, baseball, and swimming. They also get a chance to improve their ability in playing tennis, archery, ping pong, and badminton. Refereeing and scoring for each particular type of game is also taught to the girls. Instruction classes in home nursing and first aid are also given to teach the girls the care of the injured and to prepare them for the caring of a family in future years. Classes in the instruction of Modern Dancing are a favorite with the girls. They are instructed as to the basic steps, and then divided in groups of eight. Each group interprets in its own style, a pattern formed from the basic modern dance steps. BELOW: Randa Hemmilstein and Clau- dia Kutzer assist Sue Thomas the morning after the night before. ORGANIZATIONS OF SAN JACINTO The clubs of San Jacinto High School are divided into two distinct groups, honorary and service. The first of these puts forth certain specifications v rhich members must meet and maintain throughout their entire membership. Scholarship and leadership, in both intellectual and athletic classifications, are highlights of the personality of each individual member of the honorary organizations. These organizations give members a chance to display their abilities and to do service both to the student body and to the community. Members of the service clubs of San Jacinto are ambassadors of good-will and spread their bright smiles to create a cheerful atmosphere everywhere they go. They serve the student body by holding dances and giving parties to which anyone may come. Service is given to their community by various religious organizations which help different denominations to understand each other and to work together. Annual pi ' ojects consist of the giving of food and clothing to needy families and the visiting of hospitals. Also, the high spirit and sportsmanship of the student body is reflected in these organizations by their splendid performances and conduct at all athletic sports in which San Jacinto participates. Many of these clubs compete with other organiza- tions of the city and often come out on top. To Thee, San Jacinto High School, we give honor and service, the foundation of your continued success. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Distributive Education is a vocational training program for students employed or interested in retailing, wholesaling, or service selling busi- ness, in which they learn more about their respective fields. For the high school student it is a program which will enable him to gain valuable work experience and closely related classroom instruction. Through Distributive Education the students can acquire skills, information, and attitudes which will aid tliem to do a better job. To take D.E., students must be juniors or seniors who are sixteen years of age, with a grade average of C and an E in conduct. They must have good attendance and be employable. For students who are interested in selling, D.E. can give a detailed pre- view of what the life of a salesman would be like and thus help them to decide whether this is to be their life ' s worl . Their superb singing makes everyone enjoy good music. 85 SAN JACINTO BAND The auditorium is quiet and full of expectant faces of the student body. Then a slender baton is poised in mid-air, and for a second or two one can hear breaths drawn in and expelled, filled with nervous tension. The baton moves only slightly, and then the quietness is interrupted by a rhythmical sound that falls delightfully on the ear. By long experience San Jacinto students have come to expect great pleasure from the presentations put forth by the Band of San Jacinto High School. Perfection is the highlight of this musical group.. This is their reward for their long hours of practice and labor so that every detail may be perfected. Rain or shine — they brave any kind of weather to perform out on the football field for their school and team. Their presentation of You Ain ' t Nothing But a Hound Dog also sends spirit to the heart of every boy and girl during a pep rally. Another specialty of San Jacinto — our San Jacinto Band! (? The boys on this team are known for their ex- pert shooting and superb drill formations. They have helped to make the San Jacinto High School Reserve Officers Training Corps one of the two outstanding ROTC urrits in the city of Houston. BOYS ' AND GIRLS ' RIFLE TEAM The San Jacinto ROTC Teams have been top con- tenders in city competition. They display expert marks- manship as they compete with other schools in this district. This year, as in the past, they have held high ratings, and have contri- buted distinctive honors to those which San Jacinto holds and will continue to gain in the future. Before the beginning of the school year, the Gauchos are hard at work perfecting their form and practicing the different drills for football games. In going through their varied and intricate maneuvers at the half-time, they entertain spectators from all parts of Houston and Texas. This year several firsts have been initiated by the pep squad. A candy sale was held in the winter months, with the profits gained from this going toward the Senior Trip, eagerly awaited and planned for by all Senior Gauchos. Competitive Drill was also held between the different companies of Gauchos, being resumed after a year ' s absence. This year has been successful in many ways for Gauchos, but they are most pleased by the completion of their main project — to aid and serve the students of San Jacinto. ' ' J, TlfCVF r « ' M; SENIOR SUPERLATIVES Among the seniors of this year ' s graduating class, many possess exceptional talents and qualities. Those students receiving homeroom nominations are voted on by the entire senior class. Then run-offs are held between the top contenders. Those winners are known as the senior superlatives. Students who are recognized as senior superlatives of San Jacinto are outstanding in many ways. They excel in their respective fields and also have earned the friendship and respect of their teachers and fellow classmates. This is shown by a popular vote of the seniors in most cases, although the most representative students are chosen by the faculty as well. We now present the superlatives and runners-up, the stars of our senior class. THE SPRING FESTIVAL During the spring of the year when a young man ' s fancy turns to- ward things frillier than school books, the San Jacinto student body turns to the election of four courts for the Spring Festival. From many nominations made by homerooms, a special few from each class receive the coveted honor of appearing in the Spring Festival. On the designated night these representatives from each class don their regal attire. After marching individually down the aisle, they are presented to the student body. When all the class royalty are seated on the stage, the king and queen of the Seniors are announced. Having ascended to their thrones they are entertained by talented students. It all combines to make an exciting and beautiful occasion. FEATURES EDITOR LINDA FARFEL Wi n i rxsymttKrmicuK I ar rm mi t-rji i. . r f ' t r ' ■l a i THE BEAUTY CONTESTS At this time El Oroso presents our galaxy of beauties from each of the four classes. It is indeed an honor for a girl to be selected as an El Oroso beauty, be- cause she has surpassed all others in her class not only in beauty, but also in poise, charm, and posture. October 29 was the date when the ex- cited girls from all classes gathered for the preliminary contests. All four class contests were held simultaneously in different parts of the school. Members of the faculty had the difficult task of deciding who would go on to the finals. On November 5, the final contest was held with the following serving as judges: Mrs. Van Liew, Personnel Director of Neiman-Marcus; Mrs. Parkhurst, Society Editor of the Houston Chronicle; Miss Roberts of Mary Beth McDonald School of Charm; Miss Budde of Cecil B. Lee Academy of Modeling; Mr. Gardner, a commercial artist with the Mail- Well En- velope Co. From a maze of perfume and petti- coats emerged our beauties and ninners- up. In December, dressed in their pret- tiest frills, they were presented to the student body as a climax to the Bear Capades. And now we take pride in presenting them to you. For the first time, you will be able to see who was chosen the num- ber one beauty in each class. We are sure you will agree that these are the brightest stars in San Jacinto ' s constella- tion of beautiful girls. Pianists: Gayle Wakefield and Rhoda Brand. This is the first time in the history of San Jacinto as a Senior High School that a Freshman class and curriculum have been included in the student body. May you obtain from the extra year that you will be spending here more of friendly companionship, quest for knowledge, and school sportsmanship — for these are integral parts of all that is San Jacinto. We hope that, like the nebulae, the new stars, you will continue to grow in brightness and in magnitude throughout the coming years.
