To Miss Collier, then, this dedication, with the hope that it may furnish an eternal tribute in the hearts of all to one Who has raised herself aloof from others. The San Iacinto Golden Bears opened their season in Beaumont against the South Park Greenies, in which hard-fought contest they suf- fered a 12-0 defeat. The San Iacs threatened several times, but just couldn't get through. The new fast-moving T formation that the Bruins just adopted this season didn't click as well as Mr. Driscoll had hoped in this first game, The Golden Bruins met the crushing Thomas Iefferson Mustangs in the beautiful Alamo Staf dium in San Antonio, where the Ponies ran Wild for three quarters before the Bears started growling. At this juncture, the Bruin line began to move forward like a farmer going to town on Saturday. The San Iacinto gridsters reeled off two long marches with Breckinridge and Howard scoring. The two South End tallies set off the big forty-four points that the Mustangs had already chalked up, the game ending with a final score of 44-13. The Royal Purples of Beaumont journeyed to Houston to give the Golden South Enders a 7-U beating. In a rough, hard-fought battle, the San lacinto chargers proved to the Beaumont boys that the old bear could still fight. The Bruins played fair football, keeping the Purples on their toes every minute of the game to pre- vent an ever potential Bruin score. In our first district game, our fighting, growl- ing bears just about de-feathered the Lamar war bonnet. The Redskins had to hold on to their scalps, because they almost lost them. ln a thrilling gridiron battle, in which the Bears surprised everyone but themselves, the Bruins grabbed an early lead that almost won the game for them. The Lamar tribe recovered from i it fj lid the South End tally, and went on the warpath to the tune of a 20-'l2 win. Bernard Vise made both touchdowns, one of them on a dazzling kickoff gallop. The big herd of Golden Buffaloes from Milby trampled the San lacinto eleven for a 21-6 win, The line bucks and end runs that the South End bunch attempted just couldn't seem to penetrate the big Milby wall. Late in the game, the San lacinto offense started clicking, and Vise scooted over for a tally. The Bruins fought hard, but the Buffs held them down to one six-pointer, The San Iacinto gang edged over Austin High School for a 7-6 win. Fred Sommers and his size fourteen educated toe won the game for the Bears. Russell Fox Howard dashed across the goal line for the South-Enders, and Sommers sent the ball through the uprights for the conversion. The game was a hard-fought battle for the Bruins, who contemplated an eas- ier fight from the Ponies. The Golden Bears went wild with joy after this game, as it was their first win of the season. Sam Houston's Tigers suffered a l3-7 defeat at the hands of the South End bunch. This game contributed another win to the Bruins slate. The set-to was scrappy and exciting, and the Sam Houston team took a pounding from the Bruin forward wall, Big, bulldozing Barney Smith was a stand-out in the San Iacinto forward wall. Iohn Rock Breckinridge zipped over for one score, and Russell Howard, high-stepping back, bounced over for the other, Spirited Iackie Dea- ver was the chief ground-gainer for the Bears. The Ieff Davis Panthers met the South End team with high spirits and colors flying, how- ever, they went home yelling Uncle, The Panthers took a 7-0 defeat from the Golden -- elle X X-J off! iii Bears. Davis had expected to win the match, but they thought differently after the starting whistle. The game was a hard fought battle, as the teams looked pretty evenly matched. Fleet, ver- satile Tuxedo lack Deaver pranced merrily over for the tally. Sommers booted it over for the conversion. This was the end of the scoring, as the hard-hustling Bruin line saw that Davis didn't threaten again. In what sports writers termed the most thrilling game ever played in Houston Public School Stadium, San Iacinto dealt Reagan a 19-13 defeat. This game was action packed all the way through, and it featured the Bruin for- ward wall with all its fight and courage in this great gridiron battle. The South End tallies were made by Bernard Vise, bone-crushing all-city back, Russell Howard, and Russell Dopey Hagens, who tore through the Reagan line to block a punt and cover it for a score. Perhaps the most exciting part of the game was a tackle by lack Deaver. Bobby Iones, wing footed all- city back from Reagan, broke loose for what looked like a touchdown gallop, when Iack Deaver rocketed up from behind to knock him out on the three-yard marker, and only seconds remained. The great Bear line held on, and shattered Reagan's hopes in what was truly a great game for both teams. The South Enders fresh from their game with Reagan, met the Saint Thomas Eagles. The Bruins, heavy favorites for the game, contem- plated giving the Eagles a poundingg however, it was the other way around. In a game that disappointed both spectators and te-am, Saint Thomas whipped San lacinto l2-6. It looked as if it would be the Eagles' game all the way, but on a fine pass from Deaver, lohn McKenzie scored for the Bears. BERNARD VISE--Bernard, a two year letterman, ripped up the turf in several Bruin clashes. His hard, bone-crushing style of running earn- ed him a berth on the All-City team. IACK DEAVEH-lackie, slim, tall, hustler, was the hero of the Davis and Reagan games. One of our best defensive backs, he was ci fine run-. ner, passer, and receiver. Iackie proved himself versatile by playing all four backfield positions. nn 0 WSW' 1? , fn 7 RUSSELL HOWARD-Russell was most consistent in his season's play, A rugged runner and blocker, his performance against South Park was outstanding.
