Being a tale told by tm idiot, full of .round and fum, signifying nothing. 1MACBETH Now it befell in the days of Rogers the King that tournaments and jousts at arms were commanded to be held throughout the realm. And the rains came Cby Louis Bromf1eldj and wet was the night with divers signs and portents of more flood to come. In defiance of the maddened gods of storm came the chariots of a mighty host, bearing flaming torches, and drew up before the arena with a thunder- ous yell. Then did alight eleven good men and true, clad all in gold and brown, who did range themselves in formidable line to face the enemy in the test of arms. The air was heavy with excitement and fragrance wafted from the near-by paper mill. . - Those brave knights and their ladies fair who had come to urge their favorites toward an honorable victory did sit huddled amid dripping skies and drooping foolscap shelter, awaiting the opening signal and the vendor of heated canine sandwiches. Minstrels in costume tuned their lutes dis- cordantly, and six jesters did cavort in mirth-provoking manner before the King. , At the shrill blast of a clarion, the tournament began, and the knights Qnow all of one color due to the slimy precipitation that covered the field of battlej did approach one another with ferocious glances. First the Knight Manuel of the House of Blum did charge through the enemy line, and through great seas of water carried the swine-skin toward the goal. Then did others do them likewise, and the play was continued amid great bone- crashings and splintering of limbs. Every mortally wounded combatant was replaced, and on did the ghastly game go. No place in merrie England could fellow to this barbarous match be found, till, weary of the struggle, the judge' of the match called truce, and awarded no prizes, much to the dismay of a wailing and ill-humored audience. Moreover was this not the last of the tournaments that entertained the people in these troubled times. Some knights did choose to spend great strength at placing a sphere of hot air into a ring-shaped receptacle mounted on a board with a net suspended underneath. In this sport of skill the knight who the most times did pass the sphere through the loop was ad- judged the winner. And some did choose to shed their everyday armor and imitate the fishes of the sea, and some did swing at small white pills with knotted clubs or loops of wood strung with intestines of the feline. And many were the jousts and tournaments, and many were the silver goblets brought to the hall of Rogers the King. HUFFMAN, GEORGE-After gaining a year's experi- ence as a squadman, George, weighing 225, came back strong to letter both his junior and senior year at right tackle. Due to his savage blocking and indispensable tackling and valuable points after touchdown, he was chosen all-city for the second time this year. - JACKSON, BOB-Bob though he started slow, over- took the early lead of his opponents with a two- game scoring spree, and at the end of the Conroe game, was tied with Austin,s Lawrence Kocurek for high-point man. His lucky star faded when he was hurt in the Austin game and was out the rest of the season. However, his active partici- pation in the opening games earned him his sec- ond letter this year. Wt. 180. JOHNSON, TOM-Tom showed profit from his two years' experience and came forth this year a pol- ished guard, only to be lost early in the season due to injury. Sarah: Here in the lowly earth now must I toil And ruin my soft white hands and blood red nails While you give but poor and lacking imitation Of an overfed fowl. Why don't you quack? Simon: Truly, we have learned our lesson: Would we escape disgrace and manual labor Then must we in the future find a way To return from our small trips still unobserved. I did seeith a group of persons combining in the halls today. Forsoothe, and they were Dick and Mary Francis, Sartwell and Grace, Irskins and Phylyss, Mr. Brandstetter and Mrs. Mitchellg oh, I couldest go on forever, but if one wouldest want a delicious strawberry fizz bought by one other person than yourself, you waste no time, wouldest thou? Of course not. TUESDAY-One wouldest think that one wouldest pass without one seeing Waller and Johnny Lou together, wouldn't one? Didest thou witness how one Evelyn Hess leapest so gracefully through the air after she had ever so hard sat upon ,an ever so sharp tack placed in her chair by one John Green? Prettiest leap I hadest witnessed for a good while. The buzzer for the last period soundeth so sweet that I clearly mistook it for the ever so familiar sound of one straw- berry fizz. Must closeth now. WEDNESDAY-Was welcomed into my first period teacher's class in the most unusual manner. He descended upon me full intending to do me evil. I barely escaped his wrath by the weak statement that the bus and not me was the full cause of my delay of entering his class on time. I was sureth of being obliterated in my tracks. I was indeed empty of food at the second period but was soon to lose my large appetite by listening to puns written by one witty Yyvonne Hendrix to me in secret correspondence unseen by the dear Miss Gillespie, and am sure, dear diary, you wouldest have lost your appetite also. The last period proveth to be the best of the day. As I slideth behind my trusty rusty typewriter, I did glance to my right through the window to the wide open landscape beyonde and then looked to my left where did sit one Mary Francis Dunn who still tappeth away at lesson four while the rest of the class does clip noisily away at lesson twenty. THURSDAY-Dearest Diary, I awaketh early enough to be at Alma Mater on time but an entirely different matter it is for me to arrive therewith, especially when on the Way to school, there beith a delightful drugstore in which they do display the new edition of Superman, Dick Tracy, and many more of the very interesting caricatures. But, forsoothe, school must cometh first by all means. I did step into class just as the tardy buzzer was sounding oif in all its glory. The rest of the day passeth smoothly, so more tomorrow. FRIDAY-Forsoothe, and I took up for Charlene Blatsos today only to receive a dull look frometh this female in red hair. I argued long and loudly with another who did mention that the said Charlene Wasn't Et to mingle with dogs and I said that she was. And forsoothe, if she didest not try toulay me low with a terrible left hook! Believeth me, diary, her skin looketh a lot redder than it naturally is. Adieu, kind friends, adieu-for now abideth the ever present schoolmaster who looketh this waye threateningly. T K O wud some power the giftie gie us To sae oursel's as others sae us! atlnr -Burns SIR RICHARD STEELE, Editor, The Tatler, London, England. SIR: It has been my especial privilege and honor to receive, at regular intervals during my extensive travels through our homeland and the new colonies to the west, your highly esteemed publication, The Tatler. I wish to praise without reservation your method of acquainting all London with the events which occur therein. To express my admiration I am sending to you herewith several sketches. The first of these is the Morris dancers, troupes of which I have chanced to meet at various country fairs throughout England. They are traveling entertainers whose colorful costumes and gayly tinkling bells attract the simple rural folk to the dancing. The remaining are my impressions of those persons encountered in the Americas, showing particularly the costumes and customs indeed foreign to our land and time. From much which I found admirable in that far country I have selected for you a poem written by one of the scholars in attendance at San Jacinto-on-Holman, and I strongly urge its publication as being a worthy example of the writer's art. I remain your grateful reader and sincere correspondent, -LORD GREEN-REISTLE Traveler-at-Large - UIJITIIIIKIIEKIIIKIII I stand dismayed before the yawning door, To which I strode through autumn leaves, Through winter's bitter blasts, And through the awakening of spring. A moment's hesitation before I pass into the night. Its shadows cease to fall along my way To guide my paths and set my steps aright. I leave this friendly refuge When I step onward through the night To meet the outer World and give challenge to its might. I turn to leave and pause again, A last moment's trepidation, For I leave my school and friends. Though I dread the separation I turn-henceforth to march with Men. -ROBERT LEWIS ? ff ,ff QW at F O ff-Sf ok56f Ne ws Wbx., 'YYY OSX , 1 , ,ian L N -A f-ww-fi' , ai ,A f K 2 5 ,. 4 . .
