BELLE K. MCGINNIS DE DICQTICDN In partial payment of the great debt which we owe to so great a booster ot things worthwhile, to so wise an advisor, so kind a friend, and so noble a charac- ter, we dedicate this, the eleventh vol- ume of the El Oroso, to Mrs. Belle McGinnis, whose long years of patient service and whole-hearted loyalty have not heretofore been recognized and honored. I 011 111 M Q W I ADMINISTRATICDN T. H. ROGERS TO THE CLHSS OF 1937: This year I am guoting for you some lines from Pope that l trust will be ot value to you. Know then this truth ienough for man to knowb, Virtue alone is happiness below. The only point where human bliss stands still, Find tastes the good without the tall to illp Where only merit constant pay receives, Is blest in what it takes and what it gives, Never elated, while one man's oppress'd, Never dejected, while another's blestp Slave to no sect, who takes no private road, But looks through Nature up to Nature's God: Pursues that chain which links th' immense design, loins Heaven and Earth, and mortal and divine, Sees, that no being any bliss can know, But touches some above, and some belowg Learns from this union ot the rising whole First, last purpose of the human soul, .Qnd knows where faith, law, morals, all began, Hll end in love of God and love of man. EXECUTIVES Throughout the extent of our school lite, there has been a guiding hand, unseen and unappre- ciated, yet always there to lend valuable aid in time of need. That hand is the kindly assistance of our executives, Mr. Rogers, Mr. Gates, and Miss lohnson. Many times during our years spent at San lacinto, we have come in contact with these guardians of power. Sometimes, the contacts have not been as pleasant as they could be, but, in all fairness, no person could deny that he has received justice tempered with kindness at their hands. Those students who know our executives more intimately can easily appreciate their wis- dom and can recognize that their tireless energy is used primarily for our welfare. These men and women are devoting their lives to the betterment of San Jacinto, and, although many ot us have not realized it, they form the bridge which closes the gap between education of the mind and build- ing of the character. Hs a fitting tribute to our respected and loved superiors and as partial payment on the eternal debt of gratitude we owe them, we can only vow to conduct ourselves in the world which we are entering in a manner suitable to the instruction they have given us. Hfter a series of run-off elections, Nick Bellegie, out- standing student and El Oroso Co-Editor-in-Chief, was- elected President of the 1937 Senior Class. Other officers elected were Marion Frost, Vice-President: Betty Gehring, Secretary, and Sid Nachlas, Treasurer. H new method of organizing the activities of the grad- uates was initiated loy Mr. Rogers and the class officers. H Senior Council, composed of representatives from each registration, was chosen and became an intermediary for all Senior affairs. During the spring term the attention of the Senior Class was directed towards a lengthy list of entertainments given in the various members' honor. Included in this list were the annual reception given by the University of Houston, the Senior picnic, class night, Baccalaureate Sermon, and the Commencement exercises. One of San lacinto's largest graduating classes, the Class of 1937, is expected to produce many honors for her alma mater. Y hai ' ,v'-Q' tu ninnupj if E Ii nl, , , Ji' ,. On the athletic field as Well as in the class room, the luniors have gained recognition for their leadership, friendliness, and scholastic ability. H lively election of class officers was held in March, in which there was much difficulty in eliminating the many nominees for each office. Never before has there been such a promising of students representing any other lunior Class. Hfter an 'exciting election, Raymond Han- kamer, Nat Krahl, loyce Wade, and loe Vanzant were elected president, vice-president, secre- tary, and treasurer, respectively. The never diminishing enthusiasm of the lun- iors is reflected in every activity. Their person- ality and charm are revealed in all of their class work. They have set a standard for the oncoming luniors to try to preserve. Indeed, this class has been an outstanding one. With the inspiring aid of our superiors and the enthusiasm of the students of the school, We have faith that the lunior Class of 1937 is moving slow- ly but steadily forward to attain the highest goal that man can reach, that of the better things of life. an wk , K as l Z 7 . -K Q 1 A j,. .,,,.. This is true, not only because of its cooperative attitude, but also for the interest it has taken in adding to the success of the school activities. There was keen competition during the elec- tion of class officers which took place at a Sopho- more call meeting. Out of a group of worthy can- didates, Barbara Berry was elected president, Barbara Clark, vice-president, Stanley Blum, secretary, and Roy I-lohl, treasurer. The high ideals and standards of the Sopho- more Class have benefited not only them but also the entire student body, for without its splendid support the school activities would have been incomplete. It will be an interesting class to watch, for it shows great promise. Their accom- plishments for the past year will remain as a chal- lenge to the incoming Sophomores. Let's hope that they will continue as they have started, and go through the next two years with their banners flying and their spirit never lacking. Hmong these are padded covers, something never before used in our annual, a varied border arrangement, and a different composition from that seen in the past. We, as editors, have spent many hours in compiling this book, which hours, though spent in work, were joyous because of the contacts made and because of the satisfaction of accomplishment. The staff contributed immeasurably with splendid cooperation, and the faculty was always ready with encouragement. lf this book is thought by any to be a success, give credit to those who have made it possible. The very capable officers, with the aid and support of their loved director, Miss lohnson, made many homes happy, donating the welcomed Thanksgiving baskets, and then when Christmas time came along, they gave to the Hawthorne School children a never-to-be forgotten party. Since Christmas, they have elected their garden and hospital committees and have devoted some time to beautifying the school. This club is a great benefit to girls, as they discuss and attempt to solve the ever-present problems of today, as well as review the most worthwhile books of the season, however, they never lose their friendly, carefree spirit, as has been proved on their bay parties. lt may well be said that the Girls' Booster Club is one of the most outstanding clubs of the school, and that it certainly aids in preserving and making the school spirit what it should be. BOYS' BOOSTER CLUB Sponsored by Mrs. Belle K. McGinnis, the Boys' Booster Club carried out its year's program with signal success. The cabinets, ably led by Richard Buckingham and Ralph Cooley, contributed much to many worthy causes. Some of the outstanding activities of the club were: the afternoon dances: the purchase of megaphones for the organization of a football cheering section: the boys' rallies in the gymg the participation in the Hawthorne School Christmas partyg the contribution to the Red Cross Flood Relief: the sponsoring of the San lacinto Relays climaxed by the selection of the Relay Queen and her rnaidsg the sending of flowers to the ill and bereavedg and the spring Bay Party at Casa Del Mar. The Booster Club feels that it has accomplished much and that the year has been a very successful one. r l Top Row: Marion Frost, Dorothy Lee Grounds, Florence Warner, Olive Dustin, Helen Campbell. PEP CLUB By drilling before school started, the Pep Club girls, sponsored by Mrs. Harvey Durham, organized a well-trained squad and presented a novel drill at the Port Hrthur football game Friday before school opened. It was at this game that the Drum and Bugle corps made its initial appearance. Iunie Clark was elected official mascot of the club and drilled in uniform with the girls at the games. The club entertained the football, the basketball, and the track boys with banquets at San lacinto Inn during the year. In way of pleasure, the girls gave the annual formal dance and banquet at River Oaks Country Club before the fall term expired. The spring term was one of much activity, the girls backed the athletes and attended almost every basketball and hockey game in uniform. Q Mothers' Booster Club was formed by the mothers of the girls to back the Pep Club activi- ties. There are over one million Girl Reserves. While our school club cannot possibly carry on all of these activities, it does enjoy many social and outdoor get-to-gethers, various hobbies, and lively discussions. CHORUS The above group does not represent any particular chorus classy they are selected from the four hundred students that go to make up the largest elective department in San Tacinto High School. The work done by the chorus classes this year has been of the finest and highest type. The girls in the foreground form the Girls' Chorus which meets after school two days a week, studying classic, semi-classic, and popular songs. Their Work has been outstanding, and therefore they are an excellent selection for representation ot the Music Department, which is under the direction ot Belle K. McGinnis. Special mention should also be given to Herman Lovitz, who accompanied the group. S. P. C. H. The S. P. C. Q. carried otf its usual projects this year, in a capable and suc- cessful way. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Mitchell it put on the annual Cat and Dog show here at the school. Hmong the entrants were Mr. Gates' Pomera- nian, the smallest dog in the state. There was also Frank Colby's coon, who ex- pressed his disgust at being entered with the dogs and cats. The whole show was a huge success, and forty dollars of the proceeds went to the big S. P. C. H. The club also gave an income ot one month to a former student ot San lacinto who was the victim ot unfortunate circumstances. This year the S. P. C. H. showed a decided interest in the general activities of the school and in all things related to kindness to dumb animals. The club showed cooperation among the members themselves, among the teachers and between the teachers and students. lt was also rated by Mr. Webb as the finest activity ot the Houston Schools. i l . , . A ' S-27 1 E 4 GIRLS' BHSKETBHLL This season, instead of the usual intramurals, inter-class playing of basketball, the gym classes ot Miss Woods and Miss Spiess combined in an all-class tourna- ment. Girls from either of these groups were eligible to play. Qs a result, keen competition developedg accurate shooting became noticeable, and winning combinations were formed. The winning team, captained by Frances Pizzo, was composed of: Norma lean Chaloupka, Hlberta Fenaes, and Frances Pizzo as forwards, with Mildred Hemnoff, lewel Thompson, Ruth Richardson, and Kittie Lou Dawson as guards. Competition narrowed down to the classes of the gym teachers mentioned above, as Miss Brush did not include basketball intramurals this year. Girls' basketball is gaining fast in popularity among the gym classes. Pllways a favorite sport, it has become even more exciting because of the friendly rivalry shown. lt is quite evident that girls' basketball is in San lacinto to stay. GIRLS' VOLLEY BHLL Hn enthusiastic volley ball tournament was the result of effort on the part of all three gym teachers. It became quite a common sight to see girls in all sorts of poses, anything to win that game! In Miss Brush's division, the fourth period team, captained by lulia Rosenfeld, walked away with all honors when, in the final round, it defeated the second period. Miss Woods' winning team, made up of girls from all her classes, with Beatrice Lockhart as captain, won every one of the five games it played. Only six players were needed on this team to win the tournament. Miss Spiess' fourth period, with Norma lean Chaloupka as captain, carried off the laurels for this division. The team was composed of the usual nine players, and it rose to victory in an exciting play-off. Hll the gym classes seemed to enjoy thoroughly the intramural games. Each class tried to develop the best cheering section, with the result that the halls of San lacinto echoed and re-echoed to the excited shouts of enthusiastic girls, San lacinto's annual custom of competition in intramural volley ball seems to be an unending source of enjoyment. SECOND PERIOD CLHSS WINS BHSEBHLL TOURNEY The girls' intramural baseball tournament of Miss Brush's gym classes was finished Hpril 28, when the second period class cinched the title. Ten games were played during the intramurals, and a play-off game between the tirst and second period classes was held to determine final winners. Katherine Kisten was captain of the winning team, and Leona Herdejurgen and Hudrey Guinn were assistant captain and manager, respectively. vs.-:SPN V .Q 'li HRCHERY Newest and most intriguing in the field of girls' sports is archery. With a new target, excellent bows, and splendid arrows, the gym classes of Misses Brush, Woods, and Spiess are truly enjoying the game. There has been no time for organization of tournaments yet, for the girls are just learning to shoot, but such will naturally follow. Besides being an engaging sport, archery helps the girls in many ways. When one strings her bow, she naturally is in an ex- cellent posture. There is an exhilarating feeling to be able to pull back a bow and shoot-straight at the target, we hope. Bull's Eye! Someone having beginner's luck! Soon the whole class will be shooting in that fashion with such competent instruc- tion as is being given by the teachers. Tournaments will soon be in progress, then, watch out for the arrows! GIRLS' TENNIS CLUB Tennis has gained the spotlight for girls this year. With Katherine Mayfield as president, lean Middlebrook as vice-president, Dorothy Lee Grounds as secretary, and Barbara Berry as treasurer, the Tennis Club, under the sponsor- ship ot Miss Murphy, has really developed into an outstanding organization. Each season a special tournament is held, all members being eligible. The winner this year was Edith Carter, who received special recognition. Letters are given to all girls playing at least titty hours during the season. Besides such school-Wide interest there have been other contests in which a tew members have participated. ln the city-wide contest Qnn Dabbs received first place in singles, and Lulu Burton and Edith Carter first in doubles. Hun Dabbs also won District and Regional Championships. The Tennis Club is rapidly gaining enthusiasts, and the prospect of its being a vital part of the sports program of San lacinto is realized. FCDCDTBALL ' vu-vpp FOOTBHLL The Bruins of 1936, under the able leadership of Coach lesse Madden, were looked upon at the beginning of the season by those in the know as the team favored to take the district title, but it was not to be, the Bears were not to revel in the Nectar of the Gods and there were to be many bees in their honey. Because of ineligibility of some of the players, injury early in the season of our able Captain, Orville Sweitzer, and many cas- ualties among linemen, we got off to a bad start, and throughout the season we earned the name of the hard luck team of 1936. Even though the Bears suffered many defeats in the first half of the season, they showed fine form and team work by outplaying the Sam Houston Tigers in their annual tilt ending in a O-O tie. The Bears demonstrated their power in holding Corpus Christi to a lone 6 points, which came in the last forty seconds of the first half. Even to the last, San lacinto was in the running for the district title, but lost its opportunity in the leff Davis game by the score of 26 to 6. lt was the consensus of opinion of the best authorities that San lacinto had one of the strongest lines of any team in the city. It is with pride that we can point to the recorded HH-City mention. Without any apologies on the part of the team or any of its mem- bers, they gave the best that was in them and played a good clean game, which at all times reflected the influence of their mentors and the spirit of the school. 1 'F' . A FOOTBHLLLETTERMEN No matter if the team goes through a bad or good season of football, there are many stars and outstanding players on a team. To be sure San Iacinto's eleven was not a great team in the records, but it was a colorful and fighting one. The Golden Bears had some of the best players in the District representing them. Some of the stars were Orville Sweitzer, who was Captain and a great leader, Manuel Collins, Co-Captain, who was chosen for Hll-City guard for l936g lack Isbell, colorful tackle, who closed his third year by crowding the field for Hll-City tackles. ln our opinion these boys stood out from the rest, although the Bears offered many a fine player to choose from. . y 5-- 1' tai' .9 1 s listi- AF . 5,1 I if' gt.. - J 5, . iv..- Qt ' p 1 fx? ,-V . With Helen Woods, Sue Mottley, Norman Evans and Sid Baum leading the student body, the Golden Bears Spirit made itselt known in enthusiastic cheering sections at the lnterscho- lastic games. Helen Woods and Sue Mottley, enthusiastic cheer leaders, deserve much credit tor the way in which they led San lacinto-ites in spite ot cold and wet weather, never ialtering in their de- termination to direct the energies of both the team and the fans. Norman Evans and Sid Baum also proved them- selves to be capable and willing yell leaders. Their lively antics and ever-ready grins made victories more joytul, and losses no defeats. Combining the talents ot these four leaders, then, we feel we had a group ot leaders well worth pointing out with pride. This year, with only two lettermen and some inexperienced material, he soon whipped into form a team that gave our opponents a run for their money. Ht the San Jacinto meet the boys made a splendid showing by being barely defeated in the semi-finals. Coming back home they met with several setbacks, but managed to beat Sam Houston in the first half. In the second half the Bears fared somewhat better by taking two games and by being beaten by Jeff Davis by only four points in the final encounter. Several of the boys received Fill-City mention, and Denton Cooley carried off laurels for the year, being the star of the team. Charles Bartley sinks a nice sideeshot, as Sid Nachlas comes up for the rebound from the back board. Buck Crate goes under the board to make a one-hand shot for the basket. Denton Cooley, all-city center, goes high in the air to take the jump, as Rex Baker comes in to grab the tip-off. Cooley, Nachlas, and Bartley watch the ball, as Cooley's shot is good. f , , ' X 'Zn . . r, 'ff v X . - U mlm I H 1QAv5f' . rx in 1 Q .gniggnfv -,-'Q -m-- fr I Mg-ii-.-? y , ff ........4, :ZW f 'JM V , .,4--1--1 N I -ii 'N' g -- 'Yi v W -.- X f H04-l :dx X P X -kiwi A fsL. 4 fglsi ',1 1: 7 XQ 'gg 1 -: if ' A1 ,V - ck ' ff: Q' 1 ij: ' . TRHCK TERM The 1937 track team ot San lacinto was not so strong as previous years, but made many fine showings through the season. Joe Gilmore and Glen Hewitt were the outstanding boys on the team. They won the district and regional titles and went to the semi-finals in the state eliminations. Boys like Punky Spencer, Link Eckhardt, Kempton Pierce, Malcolm Cunningham, Charles Scheps, and lack Butler were responsible tor the Golden Bears' winning the City Title from Milby in two playeott games, the first being a scoreless tie, and the second a 3 to l battle, with the Bruins coming out on the long end ot the score. Qtter the Bruins won the City Title, they went on to gain higher laurels by defeating St. Thomas, 2 to O, in the most exciting ice game seen here in several yearsg then climaxing the season by Winning from the strong Houston University team, 3 to 1. Scheps signals a teammate to pass, while Cunningham watches the puck. Malcolm Cunning- ham signals another qoal for San Iacinto. HLTON HHRDING In the eleven years that Cap Harding has been at San Iacinto, he has produced track stars who are now hanging up records for colleges. His track teams have won eight district championships, and the 1930 team won State Championship. It was through his coaching that San lacinto turned out such products as Burton Burnstein, one of the best high school hurdlers in the United States. WHLTER HODGES Coach Hodges has gained an enviable reputation during his career of basketball coaching at San lacinto. He has developed five city championship teams, and sent two to the state finals, one of them being eliminated only by the playoff of a tie with the national champions. He has produced such men as Harry lourneay, his brother, Lee Tynes lourneay, and R. T. Eaton. Since 1924, he has brought cups and honors to San Iacinto with his steady and quiet training. But above all, he has succeeded in the making of men. JESSE MHDDEN This being his second year, he has made many friends among the Bears, at the school and in the city. Under the guiding hand of Madden, the Bruins of 1936 played good clean football all through the season, and he not only builds good football teams, but develops gentlemen as well. H11 hail to lesse Madden and the Golden Bears of 1937. BLQINE INGRHHHM Blaine Ingraham was the first man to bring ice hockey into the high schools of Houston. He has done much to further this sport, and enjoys an en- viable reputation tor producing good teams. His 1936 team was, without a doubt, the most colorful and outstanding in many seasons. I didn't know just what to do so I slung my skates over my shoulder and came out to skate and think. Qnd the minute I stepped on the ice it hit me+Plop! There it was and here I am right in the middle ot the ice. Since I am compelled to sit down most of the time, I thought a sitdown strike would be the easiest way. Such is the case of me and my friends. What do you think of it?
