I I know that you who are about to graduate 9 will carry with you memories of many pleasant hours spent in building the foundation for your education. It will indeed be a privilege for you who are seniors to graduate S during the Texas Centennial year. I Certainly no greater inspiration could be given any graduating class than the fact that it is grad- uating on the one hundredth anniversary of Texas independ- ence. ROGERS wti'1w-f We J . t , it , x , it at X ,Q KX ' , l CLASS MESSAGE One hundred years ago at this writing the little army of Sam Houston was on the very brink of an undertaking that meant destruction to their hopes, their loves, their very lives, or it meant personal glory, civic freedom, and their cherished safety of home. The Alamo and Coliad had Shown there was no middle ground. They must conquer or all would he lost. Class of l936, you are on the brink of an undertaking at this your com- mencement year. A great task is to he performed and rough is the way. Great are the odds against you and cruel are the foes you meet, but a life of unselfish enthusiasm, unselfish determination, unselfish devotion to a worthy cause will carry you to the very pinnacles of human love and honor. Sincerely, your friend, LL.,.-l.-.l-l- li-.-- . .... .T-ll-1 'CENTENNIAL EDITIGIN EXECUTIVES As the time arrives when we must leave the , scene of our labors for the past three years, lf it is only naturalfor us to become somewhat M, T, H. Roger, reflective. For some of us, high school has Q .,Q-J been a glorious educational adventure, for others, a period of carefree pleasure. Some of us have been happy, some sad, some con- tented, and others dissatisfied, but despite the Mr. E. C. Gates I 1 variations and the conflicts which have pre- J vailed, we feel that there has been at least one stabilizing factor in our school life, that is friendship with our teachers. They have ' , , Miss Genevieve been our companions who not only instructed Johnson us but shared with us our joys and sorrows. These experiences have been many and va- ried, and without the experienced guidance and gentle modulating influence of our teachers, we would have fared badly in our undertakings. Instead, sustained by their invaluable advice, and encouraged by their friendship and sympathetic understanding, we have been able to overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. lt is with sincere regret that we leave our friends, the faculty, who have enriched our knowledge of human nature as well as our material knowledge, and it is sincerely that we express our gratitude to them for their invaluable assistance. s 1i - 1 Eli 0 ll0 SQ y 1936 H 1 K.-XTHICRINECAY M051 Rvprffswztrzliuff Girl Mos! li'f'prf'sf'r1tc1livr' Siudwzl i1 1....l1.- . The election was very warmly con- tested and produced much excitement throughout the school. The result was victory for Billy Harvin, Criff Vance, Joan Brooks, and John Seaman as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. During the spring months the attention of the senior class was focused upon a brilliant list of activities which included the senior picnic, senior dance, class night, Baccalaureate sermon, and commencement exercises. These long awaited events furnished a distinctive and enjoyable program for the graduating class. The hrst meeting of the senior class was held in March for the purpose of selecting colors, flower, spon- sor, and mottog and transacting other business of the senior class. A very lively interest was shown in all proceedings, and due to extended discussion and lack of agreement, final decisions were postponed until a second meeting where it was decided to name Miss Sarah Cross as sponsor, the talisman rose as the Hower, yellow and white as the colors, and '6To know everything of something and something of everythingi' as the class motto. With these decisions behind them, the members of the Centennial Class went forward with their last few months of work looking toward the days when San Jacinto would be a pleasant memory. .-1 a llillv Harvin Grill' Vance 'loan Brooks john Seaman if-: .:. 1 ' CENTENNIAL EllI'l'ION SENIOR COMMITTEES RING COMMITTEE Russel Jacobe, Chairman Jane Elledge Billy Daniel Burton Burnstein Martha Harris INVITATION COMMITTEE James Shively, Chairman Tom Wier Q Dorothy Geiselman Margaret Cox Madelyn Ollis Charles McKiearman Kenneth Holloway COLOR-FLOVVER-MOTTO COMMITTEE Katherine Gay, Chairman Pat Thomas Emeronce Heyne Bob Wommack Robert McCants CAP AND GOWN COMMITTEE Young Bussey, Chairman Glynn Bussey Julius Hoblizel Mimi Gerber Ruth Fowler Phil Manning Melva Isaacks Frances Pendarvis Boone Disque Willard Thompson Sponsor,-Mr. Williams DANCE COMMITTEE Court Norton, Chairman George Harvey Frances Sisk Mary Margaret Raymond Caroll Church Griff Vance Howard Williams Mary Frances Armstrong - E Harriett Barnett Jeannette R3untree KP SponsorglVIiss Bruslg, ,-,, A ' ,X ix PICNIC COMMITTEE Syd Davis. It has two great responsibilitiesg first, to lead as an example for sophomore classes, second, to become well-experienced and equipped in leadership in order to be capable of taking over the reins of the senior class. The chief activity of the junior class of 1935-1936 was its election of oflicers which took place at a call meeting in the boys, gym on the afternoon of May the fourth. Mr. Rogers presided at the meeting until a president had been elected. The result of the presi- dential election was a victory for Helen Campbell of Miss Trevino's registration. She then took charge of the meeting and conducted the election of the other officers. Norman Evans and Olive Dustin of Miss Trevinols registration were elected vice-president and secretary respectively, and Marian Frost of Miss Gil- lespie's registration was made treasurer. Although there are not many class activities for un- dergraduates, this class proved to be a lively bunch. They seemed to afford every prospect for an excellent senior class of 1937. . .- Hl'IlX.X1l21lTlS Hn-tty .loan :Xlgcr Riclmlwl Iinckiughzim Adrivnl1ck'amp Iiflith L':1r1v1' Ilurrls Ilallry I'1-nn I-fhlcrs Hvlcn Ifllis Nm'n1ar1Ffx'zu1s -IHCKILICIXII ljllgllll llzwirl l'.2ll'llSXX'lll'H1 XIa1'gz11'ct I'il'k'L'l111ll1 Xlarizm Ifmst I lmmtlmy flfflllllllfi Rhymlfmia Ham ' lilliwalce H2illk2ll11l'l' Xlilclrc-cl Hzxrglwwc Lyllia Hmwtmzm Lynrlzx Hnuchius li1lll1lCL'Il-l1ll'1'l'll fX:111Cy,lv11ning's Xli1'ian1j41l111s1m Hzirlmara -IHIICS Mary Olixc KL- -- I hpris 1.1-zlhy -lulm Luka-1' Nziflim' Xlzuming fxllllit Miller Iirlith Nurris Hay I'ic'1'Cn' Vzilricia Vrirlrlic HCIfX',l2'1l'lQ Sims .Xllen Taylm' lirlith XX alkur liatI1a1'i11cXXz1n- l-vm1arrl XX arrun Xla1'1haXXr-lvlv Xurma XXvl1I1 ,func XX'illiamQ Heh-11 XXilcl1u1' CENTENNIAL EDITIIIN li Abell, Curthbert Adam, Charles Adams, Betty Adams, Dominick Alger, Bettie Jean Allen, Dorothy Allen, Raymond Allison, Francis Anderson, Billy Anderson, Jimmy Anderson, John Anderson, L. This sophomore class, strengthened by numbers at mid-term, which made it the largest class in the history of San Jacinto, became readily recognized as an outstanding group. It optimistically accepted its position despite the aloofness of the higher classes, and its fine spirit of cooperation, sportsmanship, and respect increased its rapid progress toward greater participation in school activities. Keen competition reigned during the class election, which took place at a special called meeting of the soph- omores. The result of the election was the choosing of the following officers: Lanelle Dunn, President, Rose- mary Summers, Vice-president, and Jerry Combs, Sec- retary and rlll'Ht1Slll'Pl'. The high standards and aims of the class not only benefitted itself but also the entire student body, for without its splendid support, the school,s activities would have been incomplete. lil-11 -1 .... -..1--1- l...l.1 -lv W f V -Y-fwfr-J. -- 'Q - fNw,egw.-- Able, Genevieve Abrams, Bernard Adams, Marjorie Aiken, Willie Mae Albrecht, eroy Albritton, ord Aleofxrgirew Nlhison, Sam Alsup, Rodney Allen, Hal B. JACOB!-I Editor lgUSl.lll'SS IIUIIIIIIQUI' EDITOR'S NOTE The staff of the 1936 lil Oroso has been especially privileged in being the producers of this the Centennial lfdition of the San Jacinto annual. In choosing a theme for the book, the staff had merely to consider the historic name of San Jacinto, which has always been linked inseparably with those glorious days in which our forefathers won their independence: and from that consideration the Texas Centennial, a broad and colorful theme, was derived. It has been the sincere ellort of the stall in compiling this year's ICI Oroso to represent San Jacinto in all its activities as completely as possible, and it is the sincere hope of the staff that this edition of the El Oroso will always recall to you of the Centennial class the glorious days spent in San Jacinto. Finally, it is also hoped that you will enjoy this book just as much as the stalf enjoyed compiling it. - ' CENTENNIAL EnITl0N rr- , I ..,. rl f 1 v O nf' w 57 cf... .f EL OROS0 STAFF OFFICIALS Top Roux' fllllrfrllv Roux' NlAliI'XN FROST flllllhllf Editor Lonrzxx H-mix St'lll.Ul' Erlilor l5ll,1.Y BRIQMLLR lx Ax TH EHIN E GA Y Slap' l,ll0lUgI'llII,l Pr f:l.fl'Ulllfl.UIl 2111111112217 Q Izmor ERNST ,4s.wr'i11lr' Editor- Typing HVTH SMRGO .'11'l1'z'il-1' lfrfflor EVANS Ml'NliIll'l Assoriatv lfzlilorn- N xx NORTON Humor lfrlilor Com, 1031.11 f I 5-' I' RUN ILIUMW NIIHI,-XM Gmamzn Bu-rs' Sporls ffrlilor Girls, Sporls ltvrlilor 'ff--'21 - V, - If 'ww' ,' ' 5 ,,.,: ,,,A V O. In the fall Mrs. Harvey Durham became the new sponsor and by her aid and enthusiasm developed the club into a tirst class drill squad. One of the greatest improvements was the adoption of the new military uniforms of gold and brown, which added much color to the novel drills at the football games. With the close of the football season the annual banquet was given for the lettermen at the San Jacinto Inn. In January the members of the club were honored by the bi-annual dance and banquet at River Oaks at which time new ollicers for the spring term were announced. After the basketball and track events closed, the Pep Club held a banquet in honor of those lettermen. The clubls activities ended with the spring affair for members at River Oaks. B. lngraham and Miss Sarah Gross. The purpose of the club is to afford an opportunity for anyone interested in writing to study the works of others and to profit by criticisms made of his own work by the other members. Meetings are held once every two weeks in the homes of the various members. As the group is small, the meetings are very informal, and self expression much in evidence. The program usually consists of selections from books and magazines, original compositions, and general discussion with refreshments afterward. The club is open to all persons interested, and there are no obligations. ' CENTENNIAI. This year, it presented three plays: The Look, Pink and Patches, and Good Medicine, and took second place in the interscholastic meet by repeating Pink and Patches. The purpose of the Little Drury Lane is to train students in dramatic art, which is only a practical application of literature. ln doing this the organization feels that it is teaching practical English of the highest order. In developing dramatic ability, an effort is made to eliminate all indica- tions of stage fright, to develop poise and dignity in the students, to make them feel at ease on the stage, and to make for real interpretation. Along with all this the students find that they really learn to enjoy acting. In the past the Little Drury Lane has been notably successful in pro- ducing actors and actresses. One of its former members is on Broadwayg one is on the professional stage in Californiag and two are members of the Houston Little Theater. . -1 il-.l11-. --i x l l CENTENNIAL EDI'l'ION get at To i ,G i , 'L-K ' , 6 NV i 5 ' 7 i V Fu' 4 ' raw .4 f ' g fa ,Atv LE-'55 THE GIRL RESERVES The Girl Reserves liluh, which is a part of the Young Wornenis Chris- tian Association, has had an interesting year with numerous activities such as service for the school in conducting the Sophomore information Bureau, community service in carrying on a project with junior girls at Rusk Settle- ment, participation in many Y.W.fI.rX. events, and programs developed around the interests of the girls themselves. McGinnis. Four hundred and twelve students attend classes each day making the largest elective department in the school. The very excellent tone shading of their four-part music has gained them recognition from musicians all over the state. Locally, they have furnished music for the Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Salesmanship Club, and many other leading luncheon clubs, as well as churches and musical organi- zations. At the Baccalaureate Sermon, a select chorus inspiringly rendered O Praise the Lord by Mendelssohn and Awake My Souln by Handel. ln addition to doing Hne choral work, Mrs. McGinnis' singing classes in- dulge in an interesting study of the lives and works of the various classical and contemporary composers. Opera is popular with the choruses the way Mrs. McGinnis teaches it, and the study of the symphony also finds an agree- able welcome from the students. Mrs. McGinnis is certainly to be commend- ed for her brilliant work, and it is only fitting that her many accomplish- ments be recognized and appreciated by everyone. ,1..1.. ... -l ...-1--1-Q -1-11 CENTENNIAL EDITIIIN FOLLIE 35-36 .fr jg: .L 5 :il ' vll- ,, i J ' A ,, Mrs. Belle K. The accomplishments of the Corps have been many during the present school year. The '6Army, as it is farniliarly known, has always had the support and coopera- tion of the Principal of San Jacinto Senior High School. To him the Corps is deeply grateful and this section of the annual is respectfully dedicated to him. The Corps in its present form is also indebted to the former members of the unit. They were the pioneers who carried on under adverse conditions to obtain a unit with a standing that is recognized by the citizenry of the city and the govern- ment of the United States as second to none. These former members have graduated, but their efforts and their interest have not been forgotten. The Corps is striving to carry on in such a manner that they may look back on their high school days and say with a pleasure and a gleam of confidence, MI was a member of the San Jacinto Cadet Corps. These efforts have not been in vain. Future members of the Corps may rest assured that they will be proud of their organization, and it is trusted that they will strive toward the examples set by the accomplishments of former members in all walks of life. ,l. l..1l-11 ... -1 . 5- S w fe ,K X I tel :tmp l':rt'I'l1omas lzrnie Xlc.-X shun lietty Gartner Bcity l it1tilit'lllu1U d CENTENNIAL EDI'l'IONl YELL LEADERS These loquacious and leather-lunged leaders of loud and lusty language performed faithfully and enthusiastically their duty of inspiring the San Jacinto rooters and extract- ing from them all manner of ear-splitting noises. The success of the team must he attributed to the all-around ability of the girls in their clever offensive and hne defense. Miss Woods' fourth period class also proved to he one of the most color- ful teams that has ever won the championship among her classes. They came through victorious, setting an example of real spirit and sportsmanship that was really spectacular. There was no play-off between the teams this yearg so they are both real champions in their own right. l CENTENNIAL EnITl0N VOLLEYBALL Miss Woods, fourth period volleyball team won the championship from Miss Brushis squad after two hard fought games. It was by no means an easy victory, as the opposing team put up a stiff fightg but by excellent playing, Miss Woods' girls emerged the victors. The spirited playing and fine teamwork of the two teams was due in a large measure to the untiring efforts of Miss Woods and Miss Brush. The third period sophomore team of Miss Woods,, showing great prom- ise, won the sophomore crown by a splendid exhibition of volleyball playing. i EI. 0ll0S0 1936 THE TENNIS CLUB Olflflbl-1K5 lixm. Her sixth period class composed of Low l0 girls played badminton, a new and popular game. Baseball and Archery also were received with enthus- iasm, and many girls became very proficient in that sport. Miss Spiess' third period class of Low and High 9 girls enjoyed a year of volleyball, while her fourth period class played basketball during most of the year. Tennis was the most keenly accepted sport of the seventh period class. The credit for an enjoyable and helpful year of gym activities must go to Miss Spiess, who has worked long and diligently to enable her girls to accomplish worthwhile things in sport, and to attain new highs in the realm of sportsmanship. -1-1 ,ii-l-li ? The Colden Bears crushed their city foes to attain success in obtaining the second city district championship within three years. Several outstanding players of the previous season with the additional Hgreenw squad carried San 1acinto's colors through the din by defeating Jeff Davis in the final district game. A sudden change of coaches threatened to halt the Bears' winning streak after Coach Wylie Summers had led them through the first game. The new instructor, Jesse Madden, admirably filled the position which Coach Sum- mers had so ably maintained. After two non-district encounters against Corpus Christi and Beaumont in which the Bears tied the former contender and defeated the Royal Purples 31 to 6, the inspired Bruins trekked homeward to thrash Conroe 65 to 0. Milby proved to be the next under-dog, as San Jacinto trounced the opposing squad 34 to 7 for their third victory and eighth consecutive defeat over the Buffaloes. The victorious Bruins obtained a greatly needed two weeks, rest in pre- paring for the annual, colorful struggle against the Heights Bulldogs. Fight- ing a clean but terrific battle, the utree climbing Bears smashed the enraged Reagan eleven 12 to 7 on a mud-soaked field before 11,000 fans, at record attendance. ln an equally important but less exciting encounter, San Jacinto defeated the Sam Houston Tigers 27 to 13. THE LETTERMEN The team suffered its hrst defeat in a roughly played game against the Greenville Lions, who scored thirteen points to one touchdown made by the Bears. The enraged Bruins returned home to banish the Jeff Davis Panthers by a score of 36 to 6. The district 13 championship had been determined. Hail to the uBr0wn and Coldli' A bi-district game, played in a driving rain against the Port Arthur Yellow Jackets, thwarted the attempts of the Bears for a State title and a second chance to defeat the Greenville Lions. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Bruins by a score of 6 to 05 nevertheless the Colden Bears had come through for their second district championship. -1 ..1.-i1.l-11 .l.l.-1 r -X ll CENTENNIAL EDITIIIN W eg, g 2' ,fi , EI. 0Il0S0 1936 , ax vs ,, A we W l. In their first district encounter the Colden Bears turned back the boys from Jeff Davis by a score of 39 to 26. The next victims were the Bulldogs from the Heights, who were bested by the slightly closer score of 32 to 28 in a rough tussle staged in the Reagan gym. By their next fray the Bears were going strong and ran over the Sam Houston Tigers by the one-sided score of 46 to 17. Continuing this unbeat- able scoring streak, they next swamped the Milby Buffaloes to the tune of 53 to 18, and then continued to haunt the boys from Milby through the fifth game by handing them a 38 to 16 defeat. They then returned to the Sam Houston boys and trounced them this time 41 to 17. At this time the fatal mid-term was at hand, and the Bussey brothers, Warden Spear, and Tommy Nelms became ineligible, thus drastically crippling the team. ln spite of this great loss, the team bore proudly the Brown and Cold and finished the season with honor even in defeat. The boys lost their first game after mid-term to Davis 28 to 26, and their next and last one to Reagan by 33 to 29. This placed San Jacinto in a tie for first place with Jeff Davis, making a play-off in order. Both teams were primed for the battle, and the result was a very close series. The first game took two overtime periods, and finally resulted in a 27 to 25 victory for the Panthers. The Davis boys also took the second game, again winning by two points, 25 to 23, thus sewing up the city title. In spite of this heartbreaking loss of the city championship, the team really had a fine season. Aside from their regular schedule games, the Bears smashed through to win two invitation tournaments, one in San Antonio and another in Huntsville. By winning at these tournaments, the Bears proved their superiority to many of the best teams of the state. On the whole, the basketball team of 1935-'36f:had a very successful season and one of which the school can be justly proud. They tied for first honors with John Reagan in the district l9 meet and by a stroke of exceedingly hard luck lost out in the state finals to lfreeport whom they had beaten in several previous meets. One of the outstanding events of the season was the third annual San Jacinto relays held at Rice Field Saturday. lVlay the eleventh. For this occasion Audry Martin was chosen as Queen of the Relays and Betty Cookenboo and Jeannette Hussell were made Maids of Honor. The members of the squad and Coach Harding are to be highly commended for this the most outstanding track record San Jacinto has ever attained. i. -. CENTENNIAL EDITIO N -56 -X 'P 45301 y,'w' Y :? THE TENNIS TEAM Coached by Mr. Stuart MacKay, the Colden Bear tennis team made a good showing for San Jacinto in the interscholastic meet. Russell Winston was San ,lacinto's representative in singles while Thomas Bratton and Sidney Nachlas composed the doubles team. One of San ,Iacintols brightest prospects, Lee Capps, was rendered inelig- ible by the eight semester ruling. Other members composing the squad included H. B. Rouse, Jimmy Whitehurst, ,loe Gilmore, Carol Pierce, and Billy Null. ,limmy and Joe, steadily improving, are counted on to form the nucleus of next year's team. ln the match played with Austin High at Austin, Jimmy Whitehurst and ,loe Gilmore held the spotlight for the Bears. Court Norton and Robert Fink made the trip with the squad as two of the players were unable to attend the meet. EI. 0ll0S0 1936 W. V , , W, , . ICE HOCKEY A successful ice hockey season this year followed a championship one last year. Coaches lngraham and Eckhardt possessed a young, but highly aggressive squad, chief of whom were Captain William Schlabach, center, Link Eckhart, wing, Chester St. Clair, wing, Billy Slataper, defense, Horace Jennings, defenseg and the veteran Joe Clarke, goalie. Valuable spares were Kempton Pierce, Billy Spencer, Billy Bennett, and ,lim Richardson. All games were won except the last with Sam Houston, when by winning, they tied us for the co-championship, cups being awarded to both schools. -l .. . CENTENNIAL EnI'rmN . Under the guiding hand of coaches Summers, Madden, Cornelius, Burns, and Stanbaugh, the 735 football team came through for its second district championship in three years. Mr. Hodges' basketball team came within a hair of another district championship and showed itself admirably by winning several invitation meets. During the spring months the attention of the school was turned toward track, and the squad under the able coaching of Cap Harding, breezed through their schedule to win the regional meet only to lose the state meet to Freeport whom they had beaten several times before. l .. -l- .i11-1 -CENTENNIAL EnI'rl0N X ,ffif 1 ll? . As she slowly scampered sideways into the clearing, she saw three hundred Bears not eating porridge. Instead of porridge these tiny sorts of huge Bear ate Bulldogs. Being not very partic- ular, easy to please, and equally nondescript, the young bruins imbibed also of Tigers, Panthers, and Buffaloes-not to mention the district animals. Since Coldisocks was none of these-in fact a little bit independent-she was safe from their savage onslaught as they browsed beneath the elm trees. Anyway the rest of the brutes were chewing rightwads in their respective cages-and who was she to spoil their fun? Beyond the blue horizon she spied some tourist camps or something. She tried the first shack. It was too little. Then she tried the third shack because the second one was out to lunch. A stooge in a pecan tree fthe nutl yelled the brown and cold battle cry and threw her four gallons of tea. But she got mad and slew the tree bears because she liked spaghetti better anyhow. -N. A.
