II SUMMIT STAFF The Summit staff produces San G ' s annual. The goal of the staff is to provide a yearbook that records a pictorial history of the 1979-80 school year. This history provides students with a collection of pic- tures and written summaries of all the major events of the year. It also, hopefully, provides the candid pictures that catches the spirit of San Gorgonio and if s students. Edilor-in-Ctiief: Susan [ohnsDii ,inci Ad isiir; Mr. tJ.irl Palnigrcn. I learned a lot and had a fantastic time meeting people and being a member of a mock California governmental system. I ' m sure I benefited from it greatly and I feel more prepared to participate in govtTnment in the future. Patrick Cassidy Debbie Whitaker I had the privilege of living in Melbourne, Victoria, in Aus- tralia for three months during our last summer break, as an AFS exchange student. During my stay, my host family took me on a tour of Victoria, a bit of New South Wales, and South Australia. I petted a kangaroo and wallaby, but the greatest was cuddling a koala. I also had the opportunity to attend an Australian high school. The mates at school were really terrific and I made many close friends. Debbie Whitaker Monica Watts Monica Watts will travel to Sacramento this summer as San G ' s representative for Girls ' State. Monica was nomi- nated by her Social Studies teacher and was selected after attending an interview; academic achievements and her abil- ity to get along with others was also taken into consideration. In Sacramento, Monica will learn about our state govern- ment. I TACHIKAWA STUDENT Lisa Good Lisa Good was chosen to be San G ' s representative in Tachikawa. San Bernardino ' s Sister City in Japan. She will visit Tachikawa for one month this summer and stay with a host family. Hopefully, she will make new Japanese friends and come to a better understanding of their culture. Lisa was chosen on the basis of personality, academics, and ability to communicate with others. EMANUELE MARTINOLI Ciao, My name is Emanuele Martinoli. I am from Milan, Italy. 1 came here to experience a new lifestyle and a new culture. I found a lot of friends and nice people. I ' ve never been homesick and that means I ' ve really enjoyed staying here. San G is a great school and the Spartans are the most wonderful people of all. I thank you for your patience in helping me. Hope to see you again, perhaps in Italy. Arrivederci a tutti AASE GUNDERSEN Aase is from Norway. She came to America through YFU. (Youth For Understanding). Aase enjoys attending San G saying, I have never before enjoyed school as I do here. The main reason for this lies in all tht; fun that is involved in school besides the educational part. It has been a pleasure for the Spartans to meet Aase and have her attend San G. MIKE STOLLENWERK Mike Stollenwerk lives in Cologne, Germany. He came to America for this year through the Pacific Intercultural Exchange. Mike likes the variety of classes at San G and says that they are different than those in Germany. He enjoys the people here, and he plans to return in three or four years. San G wishes Mike the best in the future and we hope to see you again here soon. ■MHK ■F ' ] J i ilSaiGa says Ernani Albuqurque Felix Del Bono Eduardo Eskenazi PACIFIC INTERCULTURAL EXCHANGE STUDENTS VISIT FOR A SEMESTER Six new students came to San G at the beginning of the second semester to learn more about our country, to get the experience of living in Amer- ica and to make new friends. All six came through the PIE (Pacific Inter- cultural Exchange) program. PIE is a new organization that operates between the United States and many countries in Europe and South America. Felix and Eduardo come from La Plata, a city in the state of Buenos Aires. Marcia is from Assis in Sao Paulo, and Luiz is from Sao Carlos in Sao Paulo. Erani is from Rio Grande do Sul, in th(! southern part of Brazil. Demitri is from Brazil. All of the students agree that the biggest change for them in America is school. Most of the PIE students only go to school for four hours each day in their countries. They cannot choose their classes, and are given a schedule consisting of 12-14 classes during the week. Th(! Summit Staff, r(![)res(!nting the students at San Gorgonio, hopes that we provided the PIE students with a representative look at Amer- ica. It ' s a gold-plated megaphone dangling from a dainty chain. It ' s buying all the latest fashions, then baby-sitting. It ' s meeting friends, watching the winning touchdown and experiencing the thrill and sweat of a locker room after the struggle. High School is cramming for an exam that you ' d rather forget. It ' s a shiny bronze ring that catches the light and a charm bracelet with scattered memories. High School is growing up, and growing up is wishing you were young again. Sports has always been a part of Mr. Betty ' s life. In high school and college he participated in sports. We come to school saying, ' I ' m not letting any senior push me around this year! Of course, it never turns out that way. We are, however, a year or two ahead of the sophomores and freshmen . . . and the cycle goes on. The junior class, the class of nineteen- eighty one, is a class to be proud of. Among our juniors we have many accom- plished athletes, musicians and artists. In sports, we have Robert Rybak, Chris Sea- man, Brad Beauregard and Tina Howard, who have all made great contributions to our boys ' and girls ' track teams. Our boys ' varsity basketball team is three-quarters junior power: Mike Jackson, Brad Miller, Vance Amador, Scott Bader, Drew Wedul, and Rod Atkinson. We also have many good juniors on our girls ' varsity basket- ball team: Elaine Ellison, Pat Tena, and Bonnie Bade, to name a few. Rena Zagha has become an accomplished concert pianist, and Robert Graziano has shown great potential as a fine artist. Of course, we just don ' t have room enough to name all of our accomplished juniors. There are so many who have made contributions and sacrifices for this school and this class. The three musketeers. Several of our juniors, coming from Air Force oriented backgrounds, have come to San G. from schools in Eng- land, Japan and other foreign countries. This year, Robyn Hopton, Sandra Lin- dholm, Alice Elton and Brian Hume were candidates for A.F.S., or American Field Service. As you all know, this was our year to plan the prom. We did a darn good job, too! It was held at the DisneyLand Hotel in Anaheim. I hope that in the future, when you are all re-reading this, that you will remember your joys and sorrows, triumphs and losses. Remember, too, the friends you have made during your years here at San Gorgonio. Above all, we are the class that can change the world, or at least make a dent in solving it ' s problems. Next year is our last year here at San G. We will all go our separate ways. CLASS OFFICERS OF 82 Advisor Mr. Bianchi PrcsidcMit Lynn Stu;ir t Vice-President Sik; St{)( pp( lwerth I: r m Secretary lana Kind Treasurer Sigrid Osorio V ; -, 1 I ib4 1 We, the class of ' 82, were the first full class of students to come to San Gordonio as freshmen. Being 712 students strong, we had the largest class in the school. Most of the students in our class came from Highland and Serrano Jr. High. As freshmen we had a long way to go to graduate. Graduating was the farthest thing from our minds. We were just trying to make it through our first school year. As freshmen we started the year by electing class officers. Many students ran for the offices, but only four students won. We elected Stormy Voss president. Elected to help her was vice-president. Eddie Myers. We had two other offices; a secretary and a treasurer. Our secretary was Alexis Miller and our treasurer was Cynthia Poe. Stormy ' s first job was our float. We entered a float into the school competition; we lost, but had fun building it anyway. Next we had the annual I.C.C. day. We sold drinks and popcorn in a booth. All the money we made was put in the class fund. We were a very spirited group, and did very well in class competition. As the year went on, we found that we had many fine athletes. Our best achievement in athletics came from our freshman basketball team. The team, coached by John Thomas, had a season record of 11-0 and ended up 18-1-0 overall. During mid-season of our basketball year we had our homecoming. We voted Stormy Voss our Freshman Sweetheart. As the sport season came to a close, it was time to elect our officers for the next year. We elected Lynn Stuart our president, and to help him, we elected Sue Stoeppelwerth vice-president. We also elected Jana Kind and Segird Osorio our secretary and treasurer. As the school year came to a close, we received our report cards. We had over ten students with G.P.A. ' s of 4.0. These are the students who received straight A ' s: Kim Aguino, Wendy Bigham, Eileen Bladow, Douglas Eliot, Kevin Fujinaga, Kami Judy, Kathy Mainey, Julie Phillips, Leah Reiter, and Tara Sneed. As we entered San G into the school year of 79-80, we were no longer freshmen. After we got all our classes straightened out, we had to get our sophomore class together, so we held our first class meeting. We had a great turnout. Our main topic of discussion was any ideas on ways to raise money. We decided to start off with a carwash. Many students participated and we made about S50 dollars, which was far more than we expected. Next we built our float. We had a lot of work that needed to be done, but very little time to do it in. With a lot of help from the Castaneda family, we turned a good float into a great float. Out of five floats we came in second. After the float competition we had our annual I.C.C. day and ag,ain sold drinks and treats from a booth. We also had a slave auction , in which students could buy other students for one day. We made over 40 dollars. As the month of February came upon us, it was again time to vote for our sophomore homecoming candidates. We nominated three girls to the sophomore homecoming court. The three girls were: Alexis Miller, Kathy Hamelin, and Julie Herron. When the voting was over, Julie Herron was crowned the 1980 Sophomore Duchess. As far as sports went, we did exceptionally well as a class. We had many individuals who competed in varsity sports. With as many sophomore athletes as we have, we can look forward to having many championship teams in the future. As we look back on the time we ' ve spent here, we realize that as we ' ve grown we ' ve changed. However one thing that will never change is our feeling of loyalty toward San G.
