double trouble We had plenty of Hdouble trouble at San Gabriel High School. There were six sets of identical twins and six sets of fraternal twins wandering around campus. Penny Chen, senior, said that for the most part she likes being a twin but there are problems. We are compared a lot and there is come petition between us but there is also a special closeness. Debbie Place, sophomore, also said that she likes being a twin but she runs into some dif- ficulty too. i'The guy that l like, might like my twin Patty and sometimes when Patty gets in trouble l get yelled at because my parents mix us up l When asked if he had any interesting experiences because he is a twin, Mark Barbey, sophomore, said Not really, but the teachers go crazy when they think they have you twice in a row because your brother just had the class before you. Generally, all the sets of identical and fraternal twins said it was fun being a twin and getting extra recognition at school. All the double trouble at San Gabriel High School also made it fun and interesting for the other students. clockwise: Richard and Michael Pabon are just one of the six sets of identical twins on campus. lt's no wonder everyone has trouble telling who's who when it comes to Lisa and Lynette Molina. Fraternal twins James and Gina Carone walk to class together. Not very many people can tell identical twins Mark and Ross Barbey apart. Although twins do have varied interests, Pam and Penny Chen share a common in- terest in Choreo. S J is 130 TWINS

The American Field Service Pro- gram sends students to foreign coun- tries with the aim to expose them to new lifestyles and cultures. The organization sends students usually to the country of their choice for the sum- mer or for a school year. An interview and essay are required for application. Students say that the preparation for the trip is extensive. There are several forms to complete as well as slides to prepare. All par- ticipants are told about the AFS ex- perience, but everyone must discover how it applies to them. This year San Gabriel High School sent four students abroad, Linda Irvine, Mike Kelly, Deanna Bracci, and Karen Swanson. We hosted one AFS student this year, Christina Keller, from Switzerland. San Gabriel also hosted World Expereince Student, Poul Johansson, from Denmark. Linda Irvine lived in the small coun- try town of Bolivar, Ecuador. She said, There I discovered the difference bet- ween luxury and necessity. My family and friends not only showed me their way of life, but a very special love and friendship. Deanna Bracci had her Brazilian AFS experience in a small city. Deanna stated, . . . because of AFS I learned more about the people, rather than the land. l lived in a three-story house with five family members and three maids. Brazilian people are carefree, never pressed for time, and very family- oriented. I love to eat and Brazilian food made me love eating even more. Karen Swanson enjoyed her summer on the island of Greece. I got a close look at the carefree nature of the Greece. 'sbt sr .v t Friends, Deanna Bracci and Linda Irvine, spent their summers in opposite shores of South America, Brazil and Ecuador respectively. Greeks and their close family ties. The food was another adventure. It was fun ,f to try new foods and see how different cultures eat, explained Karen. Mike Kelly visited Switzerland. Mike lived with his AFS family in a redwood Chalet which housed seven other families. He said, The balcony overlooked the surrounding forest, the ski run and lake. Mike also stated, Looking back at my pictures and reading my diary, I am still fascinated by the beauty of this country. Christina Keller, San Gabriel's stu- dent from abroad from Switzerland is visiting here from Switzerland. She ex- plains, There are many differences between school in America and school of Switzerland. I really enjoyed the possibility to choose my own subjects. In Switzerland the subjects are given to you by the school and there is no way you can drop a class. I also liked the relationship between teachers and the students. It is much less conservative and formal. It was also an unusual ex- perience for me to come to America and see so many cultures and na- tionalities in one country. Poul Johansson is here through the foreign exchange association, World Experience. He enjoys the weather of California, even though it is a change from the snow-covered mountains of Switzerland. Both foreign exchange programs, AFS and World Experience turn places into people and provide all participants with a memorable experience, S All or az, I A tv W 11 Kelly visited the Swiss Alps while Karen Swanson enjoyed her AFS experience on the ancient island AFS STUDENTS

clockwise: The similarities and differences between fraternal twins are easily recognized in this picture of Cherri and Terri Lopez and Anabel and lsabel Fregoza. Identical twins Pam and Leslie Buckley enjoy their similarities. No one suspects fraternal twins Robin and Dustin Fain or Rhea and Randall Shaffstall of being twins. The resemblances are crystal clear among identical twins Patty and Debbie Place and Mike and Mark Schwarz. n 3'-N4 5-...W TWINS 131
