JUDY KNAPP Exchange Student to Norway mezican 5510665 Three years ago the American Field Service program was initiated at San Gabriel High School. Since that time we have been privileged to share in the lives of students who come to San Gabriel from foreign lands and in the experiences of who travel abroad. We have been helping to carry out the purposes of the AFS - the promotion of understanding and friendship among our own students the peoples of the world. The history of the AFS is surprising and unique because the original program was so different from the one today. lt was founded in 1915 as a volunteer ambulance service with the French Armies in World War I. After again serving in the same capacity in World War II, the AFS was converted to a peace-time programsponsoring the exchange of students between the United States and other countries over the globe. Participating countries now number more than forty. Ole Stig Anderson, from Denmark, and Susan Perring, from England, were the first AFS students at San Gabriel in 1957. During the summer of 1958, S.G.H.S. was represented in Germany by Linda Jacquot and in Finland by Bill Rice. John Hedde, from France, and lta Naiman, from Brazil, attended S.G.H.S. in 1959. Last summer Judy Knapp went to Norway. This past school year we had two students from Greece - George Alicakis from Athens and Martha Spyridacou from Rhodes. - Each year at S.G.H.S. we have given an AFS variety show, whose proceeds go toward the bringing of foreign students here and the sending of San Gabriel students abroad during the next year. lt is hoped that this worthwhile program will continue to be a part of our high school.
