REGINALD BELL Dean of Student Personnel and Guidunrr JOHN H. BUTLER Dean of Professional Edu:-ation WALTER J. HOMAN Director of Admissions J. PAUL LEONARD President, Suu Franrixro Slate College President Speaks . . . This is our Golden Anniversary Year, the year in which we look back to our beginning and count our accomplishments. We began as a two-year normal school with only a few students, today We offer iive years of education and our student body has grown one hundred fold. ln the beginning our program was confined to the education of teachers, today we have extended our offerings to include education for those in business, arts, sciences, and for public servants in several fields of public service. Early in its beginning and under the leadership of Frederic Burk, San Francisco State College made distinctive contributions to the education of teachers. The plan evolved in our Frederic Burk Laboratory School spread to the Midwest, the East, and to Europe. It appeared in several forms in various school systems. Teachers were trained to give individual attention to elementary children. Throughout the years thousands of teachers have left this institution better equipped to give growing boys and girls an understanding of how to become well adjusted citizens in a de- mocracy. Now many of them are returning to continue their edu- cation in our in-service program. Today our leadership continues to be felt throughout the field of education. We are justly proud of the contributions We have made as institution to the field of higher education, and we look forward with confidence to the future and to the part that we may play in developing a superior educational program for our students. The spirit of San Francisco State is in tune with the spirit of the West-a spirit that looks forward to the expansions, to the development, and to the improvement of all areas of human ex- perience. ln this we shall ever play our part. -J. PAUL LEONARD
