FRANC .SCA 194 9 Summing up 50 Years IN 50 YEAPS State has grown from an infant in education to a healthy adolescent howling for a new campus. Created by an act of the Slate Legislature in 1899, San Fran- cisco Normal School began its existence in downtown San Francisco in a two-story building on Powell Street near the Fairmont Hotel. Boasting an initial enrollment of 135, the school was guided through its early growing pains by Dr. Frederic Burk. After the conflagration of 1906 State came to roost at its present site in an abandoned chapel which housed the institution until College Hall was completed in 1910. By 1917 the enrollment was 357 women. Males were not admitted to the premises until 1929, but the gals struggled along without them, boosting the student body till it numbered 800 in 1921. Bachelor of Arts degrees were first granted in 1923, and State took its place as a four-year institution. Frederic Burk School opened in 1932 and was hailed as the last word for that period in teacher training. ln 1935 State assumed its present name, San Francisco State College and continued its battle for a larger campus. Under its new name progress was made and land purchased near Lake Merced for the new campus. During the intervening years between then and now, war and other diliiculties have postponed it. Present enrollment is at a new peak with 3718 students taking full-time courses. A better than 3000 per cent increase in 50 years indicates the growing possibilities of San Francisco State College. WE EDICA TE. . . We, the class of 1949, dedicate this Fran- eiscan to the campus that has become known as the G'workingman's college. On these grounds dreams have prospered, careers have been molded, and Wmcn of tomorrow have emerged. To those of us who have entered these pol'- tals, studied in this school, and remained long: enough to graduate, it has pleasant memories. Within these humble walls we have received an education that we consider comparable to the best. We join the classes of the past in looking forward to the campus that will be built along the shores of Lake Merced. Its 96 acres and magnificent buildings will become an oasis in the desert of State's past dreams. However, we do remember the old buildings, tin huts, the palm tree, Anderson Hall, the lawn, Frederic Burk, and all the other physical properties that have made the campus of San Francisco State College unique, and all ours.
