FRANC .SCA 194 9 Summing up 50 Years IN 50 YEAPS State has grown from an infant in education to a healthy adolescent howling for a new campus. Created by an act of the Slate Legislature in 1899, San Fran- cisco Normal School began its existence in downtown San Francisco in a two-story building on Powell Street near the Fairmont Hotel. Boasting an initial enrollment of 135, the school was guided through its early growing pains by Dr. Frederic Burk. After the conflagration of 1906 State came to roost at its present site in an abandoned chapel which housed the institution until College Hall was completed in 1910. By 1917 the enrollment was 357 women. Males were not admitted to the premises until 1929, but the gals struggled along without them, boosting the student body till it numbered 800 in 1921. Bachelor of Arts degrees were first granted in 1923, and State took its place as a four-year institution. Frederic Burk School opened in 1932 and was hailed as the last word for that period in teacher training. ln 1935 State assumed its present name, San Francisco State College and continued its battle for a larger campus. Under its new name progress was made and land purchased near Lake Merced for the new campus. During the intervening years between then and now, war and other diliiculties have postponed it. Present enrollment is at a new peak with 3718 students taking full-time courses. A better than 3000 per cent increase in 50 years indicates the growing possibilities of San Francisco State College. We, the class of 1949, dedicate this Fran- eiscan to the campus that has become known as the G'workingman's college. On these grounds dreams have prospered, careers have been molded, and Wmcn of tomorrow have emerged. To those of us who have entered these pol'- tals, studied in this school, and remained long: enough to graduate, it has pleasant memories. Within these humble walls we have received an education that we consider comparable to the best. We join the classes of the past in looking forward to the campus that will be built along the shores of Lake Merced. Its 96 acres and magnificent buildings will become an oasis in the desert of State's past dreams. However, we do remember the old buildings, tin huts, the palm tree, Anderson Hall, the lawn, Frederic Burk, and all the other physical properties that have made the campus of San Francisco State College unique, and all ours. . . . Through Those Who Have Guided Statefs Destiny . . . FREDERIC HURK from 1899 to 1924 . . . fupper left! a brilliant educator and writer. Drew the attention of the educational world to this A institution through his development of the principle of individual differences and his practical policies in adjusting education to each individual according to his capacities and ability. ARCHIBALD B. ANDERSON from 1924 to 1927 . . . Kremer left! respected and popular educator and follower of Frederic Burk. whose administration was cnt short by an untimely death. Fifty Years ALEXANDER C. ROBERTS from 1927 to 1945 . . . flower right! admired and democratic leader of the faculty through the period of expansion from teacheris college to state college. Under his guidance the liberal arts field was expanded and the college won its place among the leading colleges of the nation. Under him, the present building pro- gl'lllll was initiated and 50 acres of the land for the new campus purchased. .l PAUL LEONARD since 1945 . . . fopposile page! vigorous educational leader of the p0sl- war era. lnitiator of new programs, including general education, commerce and special education. Leader in reorganization upon the basis of college divisions and administra- tive eHiciency. He has also procured addi- tional land appropriations for the building program at Lake Merced. A I-HEBREW-2-E! 25 f nf x.x7s a :JL REGINALD BELL Dean of Student Personnel and Guidunrr JOHN H. BUTLER Dean of Professional Edu:-ation WALTER J. HOMAN Director of Admissions J. PAUL LEONARD President, Suu Franrixro Slate College President Speaks . . . This is our Golden Anniversary Year, the year in which we look back to our beginning and count our accomplishments. We began as a two-year normal school with only a few students, today We offer iive years of education and our student body has grown one hundred fold. ln the beginning our program was confined to the education of teachers, today we have extended our offerings to include education for those in business, arts, sciences, and for public servants in several fields of public service. Early in its beginning and under the leadership of Frederic Burk, San Francisco State College made distinctive contributions to the education of teachers. The plan evolved in our Frederic Burk Laboratory School spread to the Midwest, the East, and to Europe. It appeared in several forms in various school systems. Teachers were trained to give individual attention to elementary children. Throughout the years thousands of teachers have left this institution better equipped to give growing boys and girls an understanding of how to become well adjusted citizens in a de- mocracy. Now many of them are returning to continue their edu- cation in our in-service program. Today our leadership continues to be felt throughout the field of education. We are justly proud of the contributions We have made as institution to the field of higher education, and we look forward with confidence to the future and to the part that we may play in developing a superior educational program for our students. The spirit of San Francisco State is in tune with the spirit of the West-a spirit that looks forward to the expansions, to the development, and to the improvement of all areas of human ex- perience. ln this we shall ever play our part. -J. PAUL LEONARD Pioneering Adventure There is poetie justice in the linkage of our Gold- en Anniversary with the Golden ,luhilee of Cali- fornia. At this mid-century mark in the history of our eollege we are repeating, in a sense. the pioneeri- ing adventure of the gold seekers and huilders ol' a hundred years ago. They sought gold and the polit- ical foundations of statehood. We seek another kind of gold and the foundations of a new and great college. The treasure we are looking for is the lN'lil'l'lllClli of human lives. lt is our experience that the search is no armchair husiness, hut a rugged undertaking in which initiative, hard Work, and disappointment are the familiar ingredients. But if there is dis- appointment, there is also the persistenee of the pioneer who came to his pocket of gold in the end. And so We stiek to our hills and go on digging. -P. F. VALENTIN R Dean of General l6lIIlf'lllilHl P. F. VALENTINE Dean of Iivneral Edurution JOHN H. CORNEHLSEN, JR. MARY A. WARD FLORENCE VANCE Dean of Men Dean of Women Registrar Social science instructors get a pep talk occasionally, too, hut Dr. Outland and Dr. Beecher seem unimpressed. Dr. Cassady, Dr. Arnesen and Coach Farmer hold up traffic in College Hull while the English professor illustrates the finer points of basketball strategy. The power behind the throne so the saying goes . . . none other than the president's secretary, Miss Dorothy Stevick. Mr. Dietz, Miss Willson and Miss Shrodes enjoying a tete- a-tete over their lunch. Ilnformality oi faculty lunchroom gives Dr. Morse fextreme rightj a chance to test his latest joke. Lovely haircut, huh? Mr. Roumasset, administrator of student affairs, hears all about the live cent coffee from Dr. McClelland and Dean Cornehlsen. Traditional foursome, Hollingsworth, Freeburg, Thomson and Knuth render a soulful version oi Jingle Bells at the Human- ities Christmas Party. Thespians are in for a strenuous program if Dr. McKenna and Mr. Miller carry out these plans. Theodore Treutlein--come now, Dr. T., you haven't really read all those books! Dr. McClelland knows that nothing ever happens in Arizona, but fellow historian, Dr. White, humors him anyway. 1 l. Mr. Schneider is getting ready for the second chorus to Mabel, Mabel, sweet and ahle, take your elbows oll the table. 2. Ur. Fenton says grammar has nothing to do with your relatives. 3. Caroline Shrodes doesn't stand on tradition at all. 4. I like simplicity-quiet ties . . Lamar Nlacl-my doesn't look as though he has convinced student Osthey or practice teacher Bik. llr. Lustrucci demonstrates his point on social mores. Ur, Was- serman takes his put that in your pipe and smoke lt literally. 6. Waiting for their portions of the Blue Plate Special are: Ur. Roy Cave, Mr. Carl Peterson, Dr. Burr liurhank, Miss .lean Blackman ofthe Counselling Office and Mr. Collins of the same. 7. llr. Tregnnza looks perplexed, but his interviewer seems no more knowing. FBETSIIME Eight hundred Freshmen greeted State College in the Fall of '48 with eagerness and anticipation for the coming year. The general education program was the scholastic venture that dominated the minds of all. It was received with both enthusiasm and skepticism as a plan that had long been prepared for was put into operation. Thus, the Freshman Class pursued intellectual development. But at the same time social life was not forgotten. Activities of the Freshman Class were plunged into with the eagerness of those who desire to get the full essence of Mcollege life. Introductory hellois were enthusiastically accepted as students thronged to the first admission free Hello Dance sponsored by the student body on September 24. A let's he friends atmosphere prevailed at both Kappa Theta's get-together picnic at Sigmund Stern Grove, one held for the Freshmen in the fall and spring. The Frosh Varieties of 194-8, held November 16th, proved that they had a great deal of talent within their class, This variety show was to inaugurate the sales of the Franciscan. On December 17th the Peppermint Prancen was held in the women's gym with Boh Greenwood and his orchestra furnishing the music for this free dance. Peppermint sticks were given away to further the Christmas spirit. Milt Dickson's band provided the music at the semi-formal dance held at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel on March 25th. Cards Alherti furnished the outside entertainment. Officers for the year are Ira Berman, presidentg Ann Bohigan, vice- president, and Don Johnson, secretary-treasurer. IRA BERMAN dynamic president of the Freshman Class, basked in the campus spotlight throughout the year, which was climaxed by the gala Frosh Hop. STUDENT B011 Dear Fellow Students: Once again we come to the conclusion of another school year. This year marks a definite step forward in the history of State College. An eventful year, it marks 50 years of growth and also marks individual achievement. The board members and I have tried to make the past year one that has aided the growth of the college and the present group of students. This is exemplified by the fact that sizeable debts which were accrued during past years have dwindled, and we have reached a certain financial stability. We have gained organizational strength in the formation of certain boards and councils. The Creative Arts Production Board, the Welfare Council and the renewal of the Athletic Council are a few examples. Various plans promoted through committee work within the Board of Directors have 1'e- sulted in a stable relationship between the Association and our employees, far-reaching publicity, and a better understanding by the student body of the corporation's policies. l trust that this past year has been one of marked growth for you and that you may some day look back on your school years as having been profitable, educational and worthy of commemoration. Thanks for a successful year, in deepest sincerity. EARL HOMAN President of A.S.S.F.S.C. GABRIEL 1948 PIGSKIN PARADE Introduction of night football to the new campus and the dedication of the football field as Cox Stadium highlighted an otherwise mediocre football season for State. The Dick Boyle machine, constantly beset by injuries to key players, practically ran in reverse from the start of the season to the finish. The Gators reached their peak in the first game of the season, as they came from behind in the second half to clip a highly favored Whittier College eleven, 18-7, under the Cox Stadium arclights. The teeth-rattling defensive play of Center Tony Morrow and Bobby Keropian's 56-yard sprint to pay dirt featured the contest. A week later, State chalked up its first Far Western Conference victory of the season as Barney Greenberg passed the Golden Tide to a 13-7 win over Humboldt State. The triumph was a costly one, however, for it saw Morrow carried from the field late in the first half with a leg injury that rendered him ineffectual for the remainder of the season. Defeat came to the injury-riddled Gators for the first time against Southern Oregon, loop co-champion, at Ashland, with the Red Raiders enjoying a 26-6 success. Chico State, the other F.W.C. title holder, spoiled State's homecoming night the following week by grinding out a 6-0 win over the locals. Bouncing back with a reshuffied lineup, State tasted victory for the final time of the campaign by annihilating Cal Aggies, 25-0, at Davis. Quarterback Bud Davis plunged for two TD's, while Keropian and Hal Williams went for the other two. J ack Caruso, who moved up from the jayvee ranks, set up the final touch- down on a 36-yard romp to the Aggie two. At their lowest ebb of the season, the Gators receipted for a 4-0-0 cufiing at the hands of Cal Poly in their final Cox Stadium appearance of the season. The Mustangs from San Luis Obispo just had too much of everything for the crippled Tide. Closing out its regular season, the battered State eleven trekked South to do battle with unbeaten, untied Occidental, who had thumped Cal Poly to the tune of 40-0 and later became the Raisin Bowl champs. The Gators put up a gallant fight against enormous odds and camc home unembarrassed 20-0 losers. A scant crowd of diehard football fans wit- nessed the December 5 football fiasco between State and Southern University held at Kezar Pavilion on one of the most miserable days of the year. The powerhouse Negro eleven lived up to its advance press notices by dunking State 30-0 in the quagmire that was the Kezar gridiron. Caruso was a running and passing standout for the Gators, while Tackle Dick Peters and Halfback Bob Kroeckel turned in superlative defensive performances. if 'lf' 'If' Coach Bill Harkness' junior varsity enjoyed a rather pleasant season despite two losses to their cross-town rivals, City College of San Francisco. Spearheading the li'l Gator attack were Jack Caruso and Bob Hillebrandt. First stringers for the jayvees were Herb Osuna and lra Call at ends, .lack Clark and Pete Cinquini at guards, and Ray Darling and Jerry Shelton at center. Sharing backfield duties were Ray Enjaian, Bob Seiler, Frank Ingersol, Irv Edstrom, Vince Custodio, Bob Brandeberry, Hillebrandt and Caruso. The Gators possessed an all-veteran team with Ed Kenna, Ray Enjaian, Mike Keropian, Tom Gaffney, Jim Johnston, Vince Custodio and Ed Cassilagio. Sharing catching chores were Tony Matulich and Ted Abbott. The pitching staff had lrv Edstrom, Cub Rubio, Earl Clayton, Ron Kamb and John Pasanen. Benchwarmers standing out were Lou G'Marty,' Martin, Frenchy Allemand, Tim McCarthy, Bob Kroeckel, Dick Diamond and Len Cahen. The leading slugger for Harden's charges was Cassilagio, who connected for extra base hits consistently. On defense the entire team sparkled, especially Enjaian, Gaffney, Keropian, Kenna, Custodio and Matulich. Edstrom was the most reliable pitcher although Rubio turned in the best pitching effort of the season when he limited Santa Rosa .l.C. to one hit in a 15-0 Gator victory. Not to be forgotten is the fine work done by the coach himself, the likeable and cooperative Hal Harden. Orchids also go to Team Manager John Marine. Gaffney nips Sacramento runner at third.
