The Marianas Islands were our objective in mid-summer of 1944. Scheduled bombardment and spe- cial call fires were furnished at Saipan and Guam, and the ship also participated in the big air-sea engagement of june 19, called the First Battle of the Philippine Sea. ,Four enemy planes were damaged by San Francisco fire. Our shore bombardment was reported as very edec tive in support of our ground forces who conquered the islands. Tow .arc the end of the battle for Guam, we watched the japanese hurl them- selves from the high cliff at the end of Orote Peninsula down upon tht Wave-washed rocks below.

X ,.1,r.mv.., ,. ana E. CRUISER'S WINGS This class of cruiser carries several seaplanes, primarily for patrolling, scouting and spotting. Gur planes and those who man them played an important part in the effectiveness of the ship's gunfire. Several times our SOC's were damaged, but stayed on the joh. At three different places- Palau, Saipan and Okinawa-our flyers performed thrilling rescues of downed aviators from our carriers. Maneuvering their plane under difii- cult conditions and getting their mann earned the plaudits of the crew every time.
