BATTLE SCARS One of the most important surface actions of the entire war occurred the night of November 12-15, the Third Battle of Savo Island. The San Francisco, with orders from the Ad- miral to get the big ones first, led a group of American warships be- tNVCCIT1 two CUlLllilTITS of -IJPZIIICSC VCS' sels. The ship's blazing guns dis- abled an enemy battleship, damaged two cruisers and sank a destroyer. Our ship, however, suffered severe damage from enemy gunfire and heavy personnel casualties, including Admiral Callaghan, Captain Yaung and Commander Crouter. News of the Admiral's death had to be sig- nalled to other ships by flashlight, the only means of communication left. Next in command were Lieutenant Commanders McCandless and Schonland, assisted by an able and alert helmsman, Rodgers, Quarter- master second class, they led a grim and fighting crew in saving the ship. Toward the end of the seventeen- minute action the American ships had emerged from between the two columns of japanese vessels, and these two confused groups of enemy ships were hring at each other. if .
