After spending fourteen years as missionaries in Italy, the Helmuths returned to California and assumed positions here at S.F.V.C.S. Just as they were excellent influences in Italy, Mr. and Mrs. Helmuth have been influences here by touching and guiding lives of both students and fellow teachers. A special thanks is sent to Mr. and Mrs. Helmuth from all at S.F.V.C.S, We know that the dedication of this year's annual to their honor is a small token of our appreciation, but the love in which the gesture is made is great. 5 Hmm. Www 2 f Dedication THEME Beatm The Odds This year has been a year of firsts and improvements for S.F.V.C.S. Before classes started this September, the school went through a face- lift and is now daily maintained by our first fulltime custodian, Mr. Wilson. For the first time we enjoyed our own chorus, newspaper staff, and drama class. Our homecoming activities were the first and the King and Queen of Hearts was instituted to help the juniors raise money for the Junior-Senior banquet. Our sports teams walked away with more wins than they have had in three years and we entertained an audience with our first play production. With all said and done, we've been beatin' the odds this year. We've proved that changes can be made and we here at S.F.V.C.S. have been, and are, willing to make them. The juniors and seniors held quite a few fund-raisers this year including: car washes, bake sales, yard sales, a carnation sale, a candy sale, and the King and Queen of Hearts competition. All raisers were to help the seniors go to Hawaii for their class trip and to help the juniors give their Junior-Senior banquet. ln addition to these, the sophomores had a movie f snack night where the elementary students saw Star Wars and the secondary students saw The Fog and Alien.', The sophomores used their money for a trip to Magic Mountain. A major part of our fund-raising was sponsored by the A.B.C.S. Some of their activities were the three paper f aluminum can collections, the school- wide candy sale, and talent show, the Fall Festival, the magazine sale, and Santa's Workshop. The performers ranged from elementary students to secondary stu- dents, from teachers to parents, from those who had once called themselves professionals to those who will never be able to call themselves anything but ama- teurs. There were acts of singing, drilling, drumming, and piano playingg then there was the teachers' skit. Although no one had had the chance to rehearse on the stage before their actual performance, all did well. Thanks to all involved! The elementary classes held a play for us where they introduced E.T. to Christmas. There were also class parties for the secondary students. 4. The volleyball team challenged the faculty to a volleyball game, but unfortunately the volleyball team was defeated. 5.We also had a lot of fun attending sports activities. Student Life f 9 . Homecoming f 15 I CLASS FAVORITES JOHN BRAWNER TERRI MOORE John Brawner plans to seek his B.S. in archeology and then help survey the Red Sea for the remains of Pharoh's drowned army. After graduation, Terri plans to pursue a singing career follow- ing the patterns set by Alabama. GUY TOMLINSON LISA MCJIMSON During the summer, Guy is known as the F.T.D. Florist. The summer experience is good for him for he plans to become a botanist and lead the Audubon Society on a year long tour of Africa. Lisa is working hard to complete high school so she can become social director of C.A.R.E. Because of her close friendship with Guy, Lisa will help the Audubon Society on their journey. 16 f Favorites LORIE ACUNA EDMUND PANIAGUA Because of her shyness, Lorie's ambition is to become head librarian of a traveling bookmobile in some midwestern town. She also wants to write a book entitled JOEY, MY BLABBER MOUTH BROTHER. Ed has recently won a look-alike contest with Erik Estrada. His life's ambition is to be a C.H.iP. so he can ride around all day long giving tickets to reckless drivers. Of course he will also be the instructor of the driving school those drivers will attend so their tickets won't effect their insurance premi- ums. NICOLE MOGRE CHRIS HARPER As a gymmst Nicole is a favorite Let s see if she can use her Chris is planning to supersede his brothers and become another LEONA BROGKS GREG FGWBLE Leona works parttime as a chicken inspector. Wonder if that's where she got chicken pox from. Greg would be a threat to Fernando Valenzuela if he only spoke Spanish, were heavier in build, and dyed his hair. But then again, Fernando could bleach his hair, slim down, learn to speak English fluently and be a threat to Greg. Sc -tg? REN EE MGLL JASON BGLING Renee really showed determination while working on the drill team. She plans to build on her small start and eventually become a Radio City Rockett. Jason is the epitomy of personality. Since no one yet has been named as the permanent host for the Miss America Pagent, he is wishing for the role to be offered to him. Keep up the pursuit Jason! BEATIN7 THE ODDS This year's edition of the ACCOLADE is different in many ways than those in years past. There have been many changes and improvements in our school, therefore our yearbook has had to improve also. We have had new activities such as the King and Queen of Hearts and have begun new organizations. We now have in our annual a table of contents, a division for student life, a senior index, patron ads, an index, color senior pictures, and also a closing page. This year we have tried to create an annual that is uniform throughout, but also memorable and interesting. This year at San Fernando Valley Christian has been a very special one for me and I hope it has been special to you too. No person can really understand the amount of work and hours that go into producing a quality annual, one that everyone will be pleased with, al- though we realize this is impossible. I would like to thank the teachers who tolerat- IA, ed interruptions and allowed us to use their ff? class time for various reasons, all in order to I meet our deadlines. We appreciate you, and your understanding. Your support and pa- tience with the students throughout all facets of school activities was very much appreciat- ed. The most important people I must thank would be the great annual staff and sponsor I was able to work with. It was difficult chang- ing students at the semester, but everyone had their own share of the work. It seemed like everywhere we turned, we had some sort of difficulty with various things, but it looks as though everything turned out great for the most part. A big thanks goes to Darlene Ther- iault for not only being the co-editor, but for painting the cover for the annual. Joey Acuna did a terrific drawing for the end pages, and we thank him also. The many others on the annual staff worked hard to make this the best annual that this school has had. I would personally like to give a special thanks to Ms. Betty Tidwell for being a won- derful sponsor this year. This is her first year here at San Fernando Valley Christian School, and she has done so much to make his a truly great year for all of us. She has been on the go trying her best to make this a terrific annual and teaching us what ll is involved in putting together a yearbook such as this. I owe her a debt of gratitude for all she has done for the Junior lass and this school. We appreciate so very much those who supported our efforts and sponsored pages and participated in buying patron ads. It enabled us to have a wider flexibility on what we could do with this annual. l ' Page sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Holmes ......
