On February 2, 1953, a group of B-10's from San Fernando and Sun Valley Junior Highs arrived at the year-old San Fer- nando High School Campus. Although we didn't realize it then, we were to become the mighty Valiant class. We started off our first semester by electing Nancy Press president, we shared with the A-l0's a swimming party at Pop's Willow Lake and a very successful dance. Completing our first year at San Fernando High School, Natalie Press was elected as our A-i0 president. That year we were really proud of San Fernando's varsity football team, which became the City Champs. Our class activities were limit- ed by the full schedule of school events. Time passed quickly and we found ourselves no longer lOth graders. Keith Lockwood served as president for our B-ll semester. He ruled over such activities as a beach party at Playa Del Rey and a very successful sox hop in the Social Hall. Through these, our class united and spirit began to show. ln the A-l l, our president, Mary .lo Caldwell, began work on the selection of our senior sweater, emblem, and class name. After much discussion and voting, we decided upon the name Valiants and chose peacock blue and white as our class colors. Santa Baby's Ball, the annual Christmas dance, which is sponsored by the llth grade, was very successful. For having the best percentage of members we became the proud owners of the Philomatheon banner. This is an honor we have retained since the A-ll. A roller-skating party and a sports night were other activities of our A-ll semester. Finally our senior year arrived, we received our sweaters and celebrated by invading Hollywood that night. Don fBig Stanj Stanley was our president in the B-T25 we enioyed a dance and another beach party at Playa Del Rey. Our big project of the semester was the presentation of the Senior prom, Moonlight and Myths, in honor of the Elysians of '55. Valiants, and Valiants only are dismissed, stated Sandy Kobayashi, Student Body President. The day had at last arrived. We were full fledged Senior Ayes. Sally Sabo led us out of that assembly and many more to come, in a semester full of dances, sports nights, picnics, senior problems parties, and memories. Who can forget the guidance meetings in the cafeteria, the ques- tion ofthe missing senior stone, or the see-sawing on the senior glade? Starlit Chateau, our Senior prom, was presented by the class of S'56. Lucy Tatham was chosen queen and Natalie Press and Joyce Means were her radiant attendants. The Senior supper, and Senior play, The Bishop's Mantle, are memories we will always cherish. Chapel was beautiful, with the theme, Today's Faith for a Greater Tomorrow , Senior tea, and the Aloha dance, the Bongo Ball, followed on that day, just one week before the end of our high school careers. Tonight we will walk down that aisle and receive our diplo- mas and leave, alumni of San Fernando High School. anyway ffm YS4? 72 Wi w , 91' 45 W, al- , Abel, Rhonda Border, Janice Burbank, Ann Chandler, Jayne Crudele, Michael fm WM Allred, Carolyn Bort, Norma Cabral, John Chambers, Viola Cruz, Bertha WW 4 1 ctw! f ? ff 40 Vf.. STANDING-Stewart, J.: Jones, M.: Kelly, K.: von Arnim, B. senior memories Following the summer vacation of 1953, a group of 500 aspiring, intelligent, brilliant, scintillating B-lO's blessed San Fernando Senior High with their presence. Other groups before them had been reported to have been awe-struck and frightened by their new surroundings, but not this group, they were simply mildly impressed and very pleased. ln our first senior high election we gave the ruling post to Dixie Griffin and enjoyed a happy B-lO semester. ln the A-'IO we chose as our leader Betty Muranaka who saw us through a charming A-10-B-lO sports night. lt was at this time that our class realized that it was to have the great distinction of being the 'll6th graduating class of San Fernando High School. Again in the B-ll Betty Muranaka was our class president, she was assisted by Larry Morales as vice-president and Judy Grosskopf as secretary. We had two sports nights and held the finest and most successful activity up to that time, this being a roller skating party at the Rainbow Roller Rink. We also were the sponsors of the Christmas Dance which was a huge success. With Tad Kimura as our president in the A-ll, Dick Grove as vice-president, and Sally Porter for secretary, we had an ice skating and a beach party. We also sponsored another dance Spring Fever, and let's not forget the Vampire Stomp. Summer found us loafing, and then with autumn came school with more loafing. Our eleventh year found the stage all set for us to make our senior year the greatest. We elected Dick Barrett as our president with Judy Lutz vice- president, Carol Dela Rosa secretary, Lucy Casca, Beverly Dobbs, Betty Martin, Sonny Skiervheim representatives. We had chosen coral and charcoal as our colors and named our class the Capris. The day we received our sweaters we ransacked Hollywood as a spot of celebration. After Hollywood we made Panorama City our next victim and there we held a street dance. Other activities held that semester were: a party at Helen Long's house, the picnic at Griffith Park, and the snow party on December 12th. To top off our B-12 year we presented to the Valiants the Senior prom Starlit Chateau. On the twenty-seventh of January we became Senior Ayes, our last semester together. In our final election we chose the experienced and able Tad Kimura as our president, Betty Martin vice-president, and for secretarial duties, Lucy Gasca. Kitty Kelly, Bernd von Arnim and Jim Stewart were our representatives. At the helm of the whole student body was also a capable member of the Capris, Dick Grove. We started our semester with a class party, then an ice skating function at the Pasadena Winter Gardens, a picnic at Griffith Park, the roller skating party, our dinner in Chinatown, Ocean Park amusements, horseback riding, snow and beach parties, and to top off all of these, on May 25th the Capris attended the prom A Capri in May presented to us by the lmperials. Our Chapel, Senior Tea, and Senior Supper, were other events that we will not soon forget, then on June 14th we finally graduated, and to celebrate this event we attended the All Night Party at Riverside Rancho. Thus ends the San Fernando school days for the Class of S'56, the Capris. Lack of experience was the maior cause ofthe Bengals' worst football season in three years. With only 10 letter- men returning who had played in a very few quarters last year, the gridders had to get seasoned the hard way, dur- ing the games. The Bengals started the season off on the wrong foot, getting edged out by Westchester 14-13. Ron Kiczenski act- ing as the big Tiger went into the striped end zone for two touchdowns. Next came the disastrous Manual Arts game, with the Toilers coming out on the long end of a 32-2 count. Fer- nando's points carne when Bill Nelson broke through to block a punt in the 4th quarter. Against Los Angeles in the Milk Bowl the Tigers played their best game of the season to date, although ending up on the short end of a 24-14 score. Ron Haramia's passing coupled with Bob Heigold's running paced the Bengals' attack. Buster Prosser made his bid for All-Valley honors against North Hollywood by smacking the Huskie line con- tinually, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers bowed 31-O. Coaches Orlie Schmidt and Jack Neumeier, continually switching the lineup around, finally hit upon a successful one against Birmingham and Reseda, as the Tigers downed the Braves 22-12 and then shellacked the Regents 32-0. Timely running by Kiczenski, Mike Johnson, and Mike Shep- pard plus the spirited play of the entire line and the kicking toe of Lanny Lafferty led to the two victories. Winding out the pigskin campaign came two losses, to the Wolf Pack from Van Nuys, 31-O, and a 42-7 setback from the Canoga Park Hunters. Kiczenski scored the lone touchdown while Ron Winkel's line play was outstanding in both of the games. . , ,. M in QSQZEF-5'i Ii s ',,' '5:2:-':'- . The defense held the opponents to 5V2 points a game while the offense rocked and rolled for 16 touchdowns and an average of 12V2 points per game. The pigskinners started the season fast by downing Westchester and Manual Arts both 6-0. Against Los Angeles was the only game that the Bengals' defense loosened, and the Romans took advantage of the fact, scoring three times to defeat San Fernando 19-O. Probably the most thrilling game of the season was when the Tigers came from behind to defeat North Hollywood 19-13. Against Birmingham and Reseda the gridders ran up their two highest scores of the season besting the Braves 21-6 and trampling the Regents 31-6. Closing out the season the Bengals edged Van Nuys 7-0 and on the neutral Smith field bounced the Hunters of Canoga Park 14-O. For the second consecutive year, San Fernando finished its varsity basketball season in a tie for second place in the Valley league. Strange as it seems, to tie with Van Nuys for second, the Tigers lost to the Wolves at home, and then beat the Wolves on the Van Nuys floor. With the large help of LeGrant fSonnyl Skiervheim's new S.F.H.S. records, the Tiger cagers won TO out of l5 games played over the season. Sonny broke Tigerville records by scoring an average of 21.8 points per game in league play, and his 33 tallies against Reseda established a new individual mark. Getting off to a good start, the basketball team captured its first three games in rather easy fash- ion, over Eagle Rock, Verdugo Hills and Burbank, before Glendale Hoover, a power this year in C.l.F. basketball play, ended the victory string. Gpening their league season against Valley league favorite North Hollywood, San Fernando rolled to a big first quarter lead, held a convincing half-time lead, and then, after'first Sonny, and then two other regulars fouled, the Huskies rolled away to victory. It was the closest call North Hollywood had in league play all season. The Tigers rolled over Reseda and Birmingham, then dropped their game to Van Nuys on the home floor, but wound up the first round with a convincing win over Canoga Park. The second round was similar to the first. North Hollywood was victorious, while Reseda and Bir- mingham again fell. Then came the surprise, but convincing, victory over Van Nuys, and then the final league triumph over the Hunters gave San Fernando a tie for second place league play and an auto- matic spot, for the second year in a row, in the city playoffs. Coach Vinnie Seekins' team finished their regular season with four straight league wins. Harley Rust, who began to be a scoring threat near the end of the season, led the offense against Jordan in the first round, with the surprising Tigers holding a first quarter lead but the Bulldogs, final- ists in last year's tournament, and eventual champions this year, were too tough. San Fernando, how- ever, acquitted itself creditably in the contest, which went 74-55. Although Sonny was the only standout on offense, Walter Rudolph stood out with his aggressive play, while Rust, Jess Hayes, Jason Groode, and Marcus Shivers all had high-scoring moments. lunior varsity ROW 1-Raring, 5.7 Desherow, J., Stanley, K., Captain, Dunn, J., Welch, G., Wolf, D ROW 2--Bassett, R., Richardson, ROW 3-Coach Seelcinsp Cramer, G.: Berthardt, R., Apodaca, R., Lishtenbeyc, G., Rosch, M Coach Seekins had 23 boys out forthe J.V. squad at the start of the season. Almost 20 boys remained throughout the cam- paign. The Tigers had no returning lettermen and except for a few Bee and Cee lettermen they had little actual experience. At the start of the season Jess Hayes, a Bee from last year, led the Tigers through the first four practice games. Hitting a high of 22 points against Burbank, as the Bengals won 2 and lost 2. . For the first league game against North Hollywood, Coach Seekins moved Hayes up to Varsity to add some depth. From here the J.V.'s pulled together despite the loss of Hayes, with big Ken Stanley and little George Welch leading the parade. The Tigers finished the season with a respectful 6-4 record and a tie for third place. Stanley was chosen player of the year in the J.V. league, while Welch was also elected to the first All-Valley League team. junior varsity 49 eagle rock l2 verdugo hills 44 burbank 33 hoover high 52 n. hollywood 29 birmingham 37 reseda 30 van nuys 37 canoga park 46 n. hollywood 37 birmingham I8 reseda 50 van nuys 35 canoga park M ln ll T p 1' po'n1e R l Cl D f fp bee basketball ROW 'l-Roumagoux, D.: Stoops, L.: Boyd, G.: Clancey, B.: Warner, J.: Crivello, R. The Bee team started off the season with no height and no experience, and as a result had a dismal season, losing all 14 games. Against Vefdugo Hills and Reseda the Bengals came closer to winning a game than at any other time. At home against the Dons, the Bees were leading in the third period, 36-32. But it wasn't enough, as the Verdugans rallied in the fourth quarter and outscored the Tiger lightweights 18-10, to win the game, 50-46. At Reseda, Glen Boyd, Dan Roumagoux, and Dick Crivello com- bined to give Reseda a scare before bowing, 55-49. Roumagoux was the top scorer for the Bee team, hitting his high of 20 points against Van Nuys. San Fernando's Varsity leatherlungers continued their stranglehold of Cross Country championships by ringing up their sixth consecutive one this season. The Tenth Grade team also came through after losing the championship last year to Birmingham, by winning their fifth in six years. This year the J. V.'s were edged into second place, again by Birmingham for the first time in six years. The teams started the season off fast skimming past Manual Arts and Verdugo Hills in a triple meet held at Pierce Jr. Col- lege. Then running a close meet with Eagle Rock the Tigers closed fast to edge the Eagles to end the practice meets, before league play began. Tin Roelen showed he was the man to beat in the Tenth Grade division by winning his first two starts. Ron Eaton car- ried away honors in practice play, but was closely followed by Ed Staples, Jerry Brown, and Dick Barrett. The Bengals started their defense of the league champion- ship by downing North Hollywood in their closest league meet 25-36. Ed Staples paced the Varsity with Joe Silva and Jack Miller leading the J. V. runners to their win. Next came two wins against Birmingham and Reseda, ex- cept for the J.V.'s who dropped their lone league meet 35-22 to the Braves. Against the Wolves from Van Nuys the Bengals ran up two almost perfect scores while the J.V.'s were pressed to win 24-38. San Fernando sewed up the title by running over the Hunters from Canoga Park in all three divisions. Then the Tigers went over the hill to the city finals at U.C.L.A. in which they all finished in the first five places. However all season long the Tigers could never get anyone to score points in the dashes or 440. These handicaps were the main reason the Bengals didn't finish close to the top in the Valley League standing instead of fourth place. The Varsity men were paced throughout the season by Tim Roelen, Dan Rosales, Paul Cox, Ron Eaton, Dick Barrett, Chuck Cavuoto, and Roman Carter. Cox was outstanding in the high and low hurdles as he finihsed first and second in the Valley respectively. Tim Roelen had the greatest year in track for a San Fernando man in a long time, People are still talking of the fabulous tie with Hal Harkness in the Valley League Finals at Birmingham, as he set a new Valley record of 4:25.3 in the mile. Ron Eaton probably was the most unpredictable runner, as some days he would take first place with ease, and next take a third or fourth just as easily. Probably the most versa- tile runner was Rosales, because Coach Wachtler iuggled him around in the line up in order to help the team. varsity 56M 4715 hamilton 93 ll verdugo hills 38 68 north hollywood 81 23 birmingham 73M4 2526 reseda 473A 56M van nuys 4lV3 6225 ranoga park T. ' After North Hollywood edged by the Bengals 7 2,1 in another extra inning game, the horsehid- ers won two in a row to gain in their race for the Valley League pennant, The team was con- tinually hurt, losing almost all of the close games played. Against Canoga Park, the Tigers again dropped a close one, 3-l. The next time against the Huskies the stickmen shellacked their foes. Next came three more straight victories over Birmingham, Reseda, and Van Nuys.
