Z My ivf' :Wa is 1 Shiro Tomita Ephebian Marshall Jeweler, 1023 San Fernando Rdr Rose Albano Ephebian Sultan Memories On Feb. 3, I949, a mystified and bewildered collection of scrubs entered Old San Fernando High School. We started off with a bang by voting l0O percent at our first election. Twenty-one of us ran for class president with Gilbert Luna coming out victorious. He also took this same position in the A-7. ln the B-8 and A-8, respectively, Grace Del Giudice and Rose Song led our class. Our B-9 semester was guided successfully again by Grace Del Giudice. ln the A-9, Allen Green took over. Also that semester the traditional American Legion awards were presented to Sally Hatch and Harry Hefner. The B-lO marked our first l0O semester at the new San Fernando high school. We were quite proud of the fact that we would be the first class to complete the full three year course at the new school. In that Q semester Carl Ketchie be- gan his successful career Q1 in student government by And now for G class yen being our class president. ' ' ' In the following semester Bill Tosetti took over the presidency. Once again our class held a party, and it was as successful as the previous one. Rosie Albano started off our B-ll semester as president. A successful party was held with the A-ll's. Also an ice-skating party was carried out, and an extra- curricular party was held at Steve Turner's house. In the A-ll our class really started to roll. The impressive name of Sultans was chosen, after much discussion and many revotes, the colors of purple and white ' were adopted. We co-sponsored the Christmas dance, Winter Wonderland, with the B-ll's. A sports night and dance were also part of the activities of this semester. At last the B-l2 semester had arrived. Many things were accomplished, one of which was the choosing of our class rings. Pauline Paulin was assisted by her vice-president, Yoshiko Fuiinami, Gail Castro, secretary, and Charlotte Gasser, and Carole Hickok, representatives. Our great accomplishment of the semester was the senior prom, Carousel in honor of the senior class, which, for the first time, had the queen elected from its attendance. That marked the beginning of the Sultan class unity. Once again Bill Tosetti proved his great leadership ability as our A-l2 president. He has given us a semester filled with noon dances, senior problems parties, evening dances, and picnics. We continued the senior A tradition by winning the PTA drive with a l75 percent showing. At the prom, Fan- tasia, which was given for us by the Elysians, Grace Del Giudice reigned as queen, while Joan Caliva and Sharon Brock were the princesses. Very swiftly that wonderful semester passed by and we became alumni of San Fernando High School. ...,, Lachlun, R. Albuno, B. Lloyd, P. Nehms, P. Pciulin, J. Hipes, J. Maior, B. laskey. 19 CHAPEL-C. Class We remember now we first came to San Fernando High, little balls of fluff lost amongst enormous buildings and continually bossed around by I'TlOb5 of frightening giants. We never thought they'd come to consider us human. But they did, after a few months they even let us hold an election, and Clark COYNVUCU became our leader for the remainder of the term. Suddenly we were A-7's. There is nothing more lordly than an A-7. Now it was our turn to scrub the queer little creatures coming into our school, and now it was Jimmy Christensen's turn to serve as class president. For the B-B semester' we turned the helm over to George Pupich followed by Beatrice FIOFGS, OUI' A-3 president By the 9th grade we could see that we were young adults. Feeling very responsible, we chose Pat Gibford to head us in the B-9. Then a strange thing happened. Everybody above us, the entire senior high, moved away to its new location, and we became graduating seniors. Lolita Du Bois was our class presi- dent during this momentous semester, and Art Tompkins was elected Student body president by the whole school. We re- member how we took over the senior glade, how, dressed in our finest, we attended the senior tea, and finally now we stood one spring morn- ing out of doors and received our diplomas, the first class ever to graduate from San Fernando Junior high school. Again we thought we had become little balls of fluff, lost and persecuted in the strange new surroundings of San Fernando High. But much to our surprise we were treated almost equal- ly. And then the time came when we gained respect -- that happening when class I eww, , is . N 5 , 'tj' i s sie: . 2 x ,t m e , si- . The B-'l0's won-and gained the respect that was to stay with the class throughout their stay at S.F. A custom was started in the A-TO semester-this was the one of having a band instead of records at class parties. We also had a skating party and rented Pop's Willow Lake for a day. Bill Jones was the A-TO class president. A skating party, a dance, and sponsoring the Christmas dance with the A-ll class were activities of the B-li year. The class President was Bob Jacalone. Joe Tomita was chosen to lead us in our important A-'ll semester. This was the time we began to choose our class sweaters, colors, name, emblem, and such. We had a dance, Spring Hop, and went to Mt. Gleason for a class party. Class President Mel Eisenberg led the procession of green sweatered Elysians into the student body assembly, the largest senior class ever to be at San Fernando. That ni ht the class the 9 invaded Hollywood in green sweaters, marching down street lust like a parade. More activities were to come-the biggest of the year being the Senior prom, sians and Elysians only may be excused voiced Student Body President George Pupich. The day had finally arrived-we were of- ficially the Senior-A class of San Fernando High. For the first time we began to realize that this was the beginning of the end 'for us at Fernando. Let's make the most of it, chimes easy going Dick Q Keltner, A-12 class presi- A, s's- f . dent. And we did make the most of it. .,.,L, U , Fantasia. LOS ANGELES .. CANOGA PARK NORTH HOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD VAN NUYS JORDAN LOS ANGELES 6 25 0 'I2 0 19 I3 7 San Fernando's city-defending football champions gained enough momentum after losing two of their first three games to chalk up their second straight Valley League championship, but the margin of a single point-after-touch- down ended their city hopes. In the second round of the city playoffs, the Tigers dropped a 7 to 6 decision to Los Angelesy it was San Fer- nando's second one-point loss of the season to the Romans, the earlier defeat coming in a practice contest. Los Angeles lost in the finals to Manual Arts, the only other team to defeat San Fernando. The Tigers were unimpressive in their l3 to O victory over Canoga Park, but then surprised favored North Holly- wood 13 to l2 in a game which was not quite as close as the score. From there on the Tigers racked up 87 points in submerging Hollywood and Van Nuys. Conrad Johnson played a great game both on defense and offense as the Tigers routed Jordan 32-13 in the first round of the playoffs. Then came Los Angeles. Carl Ketchie was Valley player of the year, made first- string all city along with George Pupich and Buster Huff- man, while Bob Cirino made second string. At no time after the third practice game were the i954 gridders at full strength, Jerry Mattina missed all league and playoff games, and .lim Sanchez ended his season after two league contests. This may have been the differ- ence between the l954 team and the T953 eleven which suffered no iniuries. . cs e... ROW 1 - G. Pupich, C. Ketchie, C. Downey, P. Hernandez, C. Atkins, R. Tuxford, L. A Be Football In spite of boasting the Valley League's leading scorer in Mike Sheppard, who tallied 47 points, San Fernando's two-time Bee football champions lost their crown to Van Nuys in 1954. An indication of things to come occurred during three practice games, when the team won once and was tied twice. The Kittens opened their league season with a tie, their third in four games, lost their first league contest in three years by a two-point margin, won a pair of games, then with a possible chance for the title still remain- ing, succumbed to a case of litters and lost 27-12 to league champion Van Nuys. San Fernando's i955 varsity baseball team won three practice games in a row, dropped one, moved into Valley league contention, but a pair of tough losses Cin extra innings to North Hollywood and in the seventh inning to Van Nuysi ruined championship chances. The team finished third in league play and lost 3 to O to Hamilton, the favorite, in the first round of the Dorsey tournament.
