J ,f'yV?LOA!?f?f22jf,w v JMQWiV Qffrjffs' ff' WN W Qominalsffzafian 1 T,- HERE is a word to which we generally respond with pleasure, and that is the word vacation. It means so many happy occasions, either in anticipa- tion or in remembrance. We enjoy planning and preparing our vacation trips. Maps are accumulated, many odd assortments of wearing apparel are acquired, travel books are read, and information is solicited from friends, auto clubs, steamship companies, and tourist agencies. In short, there is a host of pleasurable activities involved when we begin to think of vacation. The physical nature of man benefits through such activities. It is better than medicine. Our body takes on new, vigor, we are more alert, and we get a new spring to our movements. The greatest benefit, however, is spiritual. The cobwebs of stagnant thought are swept away, the eyes clear and brighten with new visions, and ourattitude toward life and its problems becomes hopeful and optimistic. As Californians, we are most fortunate indeed, because this glorious state is preeminently the vacation supreme. Every conceivable scenery can be viewed and any climate can be experienced. The finest system of highways leads everywhere from the mountain to the sea, and from 'the desert to the city. And when we return to our jobs, after a well spent vacation, We work with renewed spirit and accomp- lish our aims more easily. HARRY E. Gkoss ' Principal f9l O the one who comes newly to this spacious valley ringed with majestic mountains whose glowing shadows shift with the setting sun, it seems impossible that ideals, high thoughts, and generous purpose could fail to fill the hearts of the laughing boys and girls whose homes and school are cradled here. Surely if it serves no other purpose, the Orange Blossom will bring fragrant mem- ories in the years that follow youth-mem- ories of old friendships, well-done tasks, arn- bitious goals, and visions wrought of fancy clothed in beauty, and after all it is these things made real and actual that constitute Life. Cherish them, and happiness is yours. IANET MARIE MOORLIAN Girls' Vice Principal Sk SF Sk :lf 3? W 'N HILE an education may bring you Q-,N lisp ' X' 5 a job, there is no guaranty that it will enable you to get a job. On the other '5 i' hand there are many jobs that you may fail to get if you do not have an education. The greatest value of an education, however, is found in the joy, the comfort, the satisfaction one has merely in the possession of it. In it one finds a sense of power and self-respect that one who does not have it could not even dream of. When we compareythis value with that for securing a job, the latter becomes dwarfed and sordid. U01 ROBERT L. Which way are we going? Let us give you the answer. Progress is our watchword, and it has been since 1896. Yes, we have existed as an institution since that year of the last century. The first graduating class, the one that graduated from the old brick grammar school building on ,Hagar Street, consisted of three girls, who had been tutored by a combined principal-teacher. Now we have a total of 148 summer graduates, who have, during their six years here, been taught by a large portion of our staff of sev- enty-eight teachers. Our attendance has increased fifteen percent since a year ago last September. In fact, we have increased at the rate of from ten to fifteen percent every year since 1909, when we moved into our present C building. Furthermore, we are justly proud of our present enrollment of 2016 and of our staff. We have progressed l1Ot only from the standpoint of enrollment, but also from that of improved and enlarged equipment. During the last year our stage, labora- tories, and shops have been continually refurnished. Our gymnasiums have been granted new supplies, and our illustrious football 'team was given new suits. Then to facilitate transportation, the Board of Education provided us with ten new busses and drivers. In previous years the busses had made only twelve runsg now they make fifteen. Last year we had only one all-high school bus, and this year we have two. K, Also deserving recdgieiition is our much improved band. We have acquired a drum major fhe swings a 'Sparkling batonj and many new members. They were quite a credit to us at all our football games. We also wish to call attention to our new faculty members. We have a new girls' vice principal, Mrs. Ianet M. Moorman, and four new teachers. In this last year we have also improved our publications, namely the Whirlwind and the Orange Blossom. The Whirlwind has increased its size bya whole column and the annual boasts of a subscription list of over twelve hundred. The campus has been improved along-with the rest of the school. Our Senior Glade is a very recent addition, and its landscaping is unique. Next year we expect to see laid the foundation of our new boys' gymnasium, followed by the remodeling of the present gym for the girls. Let's look into the future with hope and keep progress as our watchword. BETTY Rrrcrma U41 I FIRST ROW-E. BROWN. A. KERR. E. MASHLER. SECOND ROW-B. TOLAND, E. DECKER, S. YANKELOWITZ, E. M. GATES. E O the social calendar the class of W'36 added a very successful Iunior-Senior Prom, Ianuary 11, 1935. May Day was dedicated to the lovely May Queen, Bette Chesbro. On November 1, 1935, a very spectacular class day was presented. The program consisted of an orchestra composed of class members with solos, a tap dance, a trio, and cartooning. On December 4, 5, and 6 the class presented Skidding. A march of events began with the Iunior-Senior Prom, the Faculty Reception, and a tea for the Seniors and their parents, followed by Vesper Services. The mem- bers of the class climaxed their high school careers, Ianuary 30, when their Corn- mencement exercises were held. Calvin Gross presented the Valedictory speech and Mass Iwata delivered an excellent oration. Class Ephebians, selected for scholarship, character, and services, were Mass Iwata and Calvin Gross. Ralph Bertell, the outstanding athlete of the class, was chosen halfback on the All-Southern California high school team and was the recipient of the Faculty Award in Football. In the fall of '35 the first Harvest Festival was presented in place of the annual May Day celebration previously presented each spring by the Senior B class. This festival was the first costume ball ever undertaken in San Fernando High School. The floral decorations for the Prom, Festival, and class parties were under the super- vision of Mr. Darland. The appearance of the gym on these occasions contributed much to the success of these events. During the summer vacation of '35 class members attended meetings held at beaches, near-by mountains, and lakes. Presentation of an outstanding class day in May of 1936 concluded the activities of the class. Graduation exercises were ggheld Iune 17. With an inexperienced team of newcomers, the Tigers de- feated Eagle Rock, 13-0, and took Van Nuys into camp with a score of 26-13. The local team, however, was defeated by an excellent North Hollywood team, 17-7. As a major surprise of the season, the Hunters from Sanoga Park defeated the San Fernando team for the first time in Valley grid history. North Hollywood was declared Valley champions while Eagle Rock, San Fernando, and Canoga Park tied for second position. Van Nuys, the cellar champs of the year, ended the season with a 26-0 victory over the champion North Hollywood Huskies. The team this year was composed of new but hard-Hghting material. Before a crowd of 70,000 the San Fernando football team ran over a highly touted Narbonne squad November 27, in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Fine offensive playing by the Tigers gave the home team the edge on the southern school. Nar- bonne, on a well-directed aerial attack, scored for six points. The Tigers, led by Ralph Bertell, dynamic quarterback, retaliated with good offensive tactics. Bertell, in a brilliant display of football technique, broke away from the entire Narbonne team to make a touchdown. Ralph ran 58 yards. This run, the longest of the day, earned for Ralph the position of left-halfback on the All-Southern California foot- ball team. Commentators have described Bert as one of the finest open-field run- ners in Southern California high school football history. In a Final rebuttal, the Cats awoke to give the Van Nuys' Wolves a defeat of 2-0. The Canogans from Owensmouth fell to the tune of 19-0.
