With September and the beginning of school came the organization of the fifth period Student Government class. Meeting second semester in the concession stand, which officers redecorated for themselves, the group prepared the 1966-67 budget, sponsored the Autumn Round-up and Valentine Dances, held the surfing movie Always Another Wave, and supervised regular Council business. Council meetings were held each Wednesday in Room 8 and suit- able advancements were made in the areas of assemblies, clubs, the newly formed Boys' League, Fine Arts Acitivites, and community relations. Assemblies included one entitled Viva Mexico, the Dave Grant program, and a number of excellent talent and holiday assemblies. The Council of Clubs cooperated for a uniform club meeting schedule and a Club Presidents' Manual, The Fine Arts Department held a Fine Arts Week and provided excellent entertainment at as- semblies. Especially noticeable was a marked improvement in A.S.B. Council efficiency and better communication among the Council, Student Congress, and the Student Body as a whole. A .S QB. Student - Zabeth Chatain Zabeth Chatain, Exchange Student from France, 1966 Hi - As soon as I knew I was selected to be an A.F.S. student, I throwed my bed-room in trunks and suitcases, jumped in a plane and landed in New York, which thrilled me a lot for its impressive skyscrappers. Few days later I was in a bus full of only A.F.S. students and we drove during four wild days and nights through the U. S. When I got here I had only a weekend before school starts to make acquaintance with my future family, the Mohrs. This was enough, though, to be sure that it was a wonderful family and that Diane - a well-known student on campus - and I will be more friends than just sisters During the first two days I learned that if you want to eat on weekend days you have to fix your own lunch, which is very nice. Then school started and I was drafted to San Dieguito. Right away I felt in love with it. Just imagine! I came from a private Catholic school, a very strict school with uniform and where I had to take 13 subjects, practically all academic. I was so happy here to take only 6 subjects, and to be able to choose them. For this I took the opportunity to know more actual sub- jects as speech, American Problems, and journalism, which I enjoyed a lot hoping to become a correspondent. Practically no schools in France are co-educational, so this takes out a lot of all the activities that I found here in San Dieguito. I really enjoyed all year your dances Ceven ifl had a lot of trouble trying to follow my dancerl, your football games Cthe first one I went to I sat near a girl who was yelling so much I thought she was a expert in football. I asked her to explain to me what was going on - at my surprise, she looked at me and said, Don't ask me anything - I dontt know anything about it, itls just awfully excitingl, and I had tears in my eyes at the last one - we should have won, because you were the best - yeah! I found dating different here for in France you do everything in a group and never have a blind date. French teenagers have more freedom but don't abuse of it. They are always by groups and never are alone unless they go steady. Every coun- try has its own personality. For me, I loved San Dieguito because of you all. I'll remember it until the 34th of May!! I'd like to thank all of you that I have known better and who have always been so nice to me. I certainly didn't get to know everybody and this will by my only regret. But that,s life! I really hope to see again some of you who will come in France. Don't forget to stop by my house. I'm sad I'm leaving in few weeks now - I just hope you won't forget me. Sincerely yours, Zabeth Chatain Fou Fou From France! 106 A.F.S. OFFICERS: A,F,S, Students: Row 1 F-B: K. Newby, L. Kruger, D. Ayars Yoko Ohtsuki, Kent Newby Row 2 F-B: A. Newby, T. Disselhorst, P. WORK EXPERIENCE, under the sponsorship of Mr. Vaughan, is a class devoted to the task of creating fields of trade for many students enrolled in San Dieguito. If one were to walk into the classroom, projects by the thousands would be ob- served. An example of this work is shown here by George Gonzales, a senior. Here, George, proudly displays a S200 fish aquarium built from scratch with his own hands. This aquar- ium will be on display in the English office, thanks to the support of Mr. Dean Witty, who financed this project. Each of three aquariums George constructed, are worth at least 8200. George is to be congratulated on his achievement and is wished a lot of success in the future with his project. Mustan Staff Mustang Editor Kathy Johnston 1: Row 1, L-R: K. Johnston, A Childs, J. Just like that, it's all over! The cheers, the enthusiasm, the hopes, the memories - all shot in one brief moment of unglory. A short 15 minutes, one quarter of one game, less than three percent of the season's game time, and the tiniest of fractions of an entire season - only this minutest of details and successful year of football - the most successful - becomes just another chapter in a long, long story. Oceanside struck hard and fast. In one quarter they had chalked up as many points as only two Mustang opponents all season long could muster up in an en- tire game. They struck and then they held and that was all it took. From the first quarter on it was a different story. Oceanside wasn't the master, but neither was San Dieguito. The Mustangs were faced with coming from a long way behind and against the defense-minded Pirates, this is no easy task. Then came a play that could have made the dif- ference in the ball game. A beautiful Leonard Gann pass, a Butch Tufts catch, a 50-yard touchdown, and a penalty-indicating handkerchief. The play could have changed the complexion of the game, but instead it well might have dampened a few spirits. Oceanside looked no better than two or three Mus- tang opponents this year in the late going. In fact, in some instances, they looked worse. But the locals had enough bad moments of their own to make up for the Pirates' lack. A lost fumble in the third quzrter, for instance, was swiftly turned into seven points for the northerners and put the game on ice. Pirate fans were living it up following the game. Man, we really smashed 'em!! Heck, this team wasn't as good as half of the ones we played this year!! You can't win a ball game with one man. That Gann is all right, but you have to have more than one player on a team!! 139 We hastened to set the ecstatic fans straight on their comments - that they had indeed beaten one heck of a good team and that the Mustangs were far from being a one-man show - but it was all for naught. They had won and to the winner goes the privilege of interpret- ing the game however he sees fit. As we fought our way through the jubilant hometown mob to our car and drove home in a state of gloom, we reflected on the season, now over. We had had our moments of greatness. No one could take that away from us. We had stayed alive until the very end, and even then had refused to roll over and play dead. We had shocked the oddsmakers, the sports- writers, opposition coaches and players several times during the long nine weeks. We had climbed from obscurity into the mythical top ten ratings. We had gained the respect and admiration of many prep foot- ball fans in the county. Our Avocado and possibly CIF championship was snuffed out Friday, our most successful season ever went with it, and the hopes of San Dieguito football fans, so quiet for so many years, were drowned. But no one can take away the seven weeks of glory. We could say wait till next year, but do we dare? It'll be an all-new team next year and most likely a new coaching staff. Kelly Seay, who deserves a well done from all of us, will probably not return to the gridiron wars - a fact that has been known for the past two years, but that was blown into banner headlines by a much-raking sports reporter on Oceanside's home- town paper conveniently just a few days before the crucial game. No, 1965, was our year, and it is over. There will un- doubtedly be other Mustang teams as good, but this year's squad can well be remembered for its spirit, its guts, its determination, its never-say-die attitude, its record, and its almost-made-it finish. No matter how we look at it, San Dieguito's football- ers do not deserve to be called second best - second in the league, yes, but not second best. by Bruce Dillon and Jerry Archer Row 1, Mike Stevens, Gordon Slavie.
