This year's eleven finished with 4 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties and a league rec- ord of 2-2-2, placing them with Oceanside and Vista in a tie for third place. The season started on a disappointing note, as the visiting San Jacinto Tigers overwhelmed the Mustangs, 27-O. Sparked by halfback Sonny Drouillard, who scored four touchdowns, San Dieguito came roar- ing back to smash the Elsinore eleven, 33- 12 on the following Friday. In their next encounter, the Mustangs were no match for the eventual league champions Escondido, who won 42-6 before an overflowing crowd at Mustang stadium. Again San Dieguito bounced back, this time they smothered Carlsbad, 38-13. A gallant Mustang line enabled the Mustangs to come home with a 6-6 tie in the Vista tussle but the following week the locals couldn't stop the powerful Coronado Isl- anders in a 62-6 rout. In a very thrilling homecoming game against Mar Vista, the Never Say Die Mustangs came from behind to defeat the Mariners, 31-26. Tied-up by this win, San Dieguito again came from behind to tie the Pirates of Oceanside, 12-12 in a rugged defensive game, the season's final for both teams. San Dieguito's fourth win of the season came on a forfeit from Fallbrook, when they were forced to cancel their game. Five seniors formed the backbone of this year's eleven. They were Sonny Drouillard, John Benvenuto, Ray Kubilus, Benny Alto, and Frank Vargas. The speedy Drouillard played offensive and defensive halfback and performed bril- liantly at both. Sonny led the team in rushing with 537 yards in 68 carries and in scoring with 72 points, 3rd highest in the league. Pile driving Benvenuto gained 375 yards in 64 attempts from his fullback posi- tion, but excelled more on defense, where he played the linebacking position with fierce tackling. Kubilus played guard and linebacker and although being one of the smallest men on the team was one of the hardest and best tacklers on the team. Alto and 'VHFEHS both played offensive end, but since the Mustangs were not much of a passing team the two stood out more on defense. Vargas was stalwart at defense end and Alto an alert and dependable halfback. Some of the standouts on the team representing the junior class were ends Eddie Myers and Mike Piel, tackles Tad Daniel, Mike Shores, and R. C. Blackledge, guard Jim Jeffries, center Rich Allen, and halfback Jim Mitchell, all of whom lettered. There were six lettermen from the class of 60. On the line there were Al Thomas, Jim Daniel, and Richard Castro and in the backfield were Ed Drcar, Frank Mannen, and Dave Rightmer. At season's end, Thomas, Daniel, Mannen, and Rightmer were all first stringers. As a Team the Mustangs netted 1482 yards rushing and 458 yards passing. Honors this season went to Drouillard as Most Valuable Player and to Benve- nuto as Team Captain. Sonny Drouillard was the Mustang to gain all league recog- nition - being chosen on the first string offensive backfield. The team won 19 and lost 8 of the games they played and placed second in the league, behind Ocean- side and Escondido who tied for first. This year's team was a great im- provement over the teams of the last 6 years. This improvement was due to the hard work and interest of the players backed by the fine coaching of Mr. Pruett. One of the reasons for the success of the team was the fine work of the five senior boys, Garry Hennis, John Hunt, Pete Springer, Doug Bowen, and Rich Lohf. These boys worked hard to make their final year in basketball a successful one. During the practice season the Mustangs won nine games and lost four. They played in two tournaments. In the Kiwanis tournament the team won one and lost oneg in the Banning tournament they won two and lost two. The Avocado League got under Way January 7. The Mustangs started off with a close overtime loss to Escondido, but came back to win five league games in a row. They finished the Avocado League with ten wins and four losses. This gave them second place in the league. By Bill Johnston and Snnnv Drnnillnrd D. Jolly D. The Mustangs placed third in the Mustang Relays in which eight teams com- peted. Outstanding were seniors, John Benvenuto and Sonny Drouillard who did excellently in the 100 and 220 and made up half of the 880 relay team. Doug Bolstad, another senior, held down the 440. A junior, Ardin Wright ran brilliantly in the 880, winning all but one meet. Gunter Amtmann, junior, ran the mile and didn't finish lower than second in eight meets. The hurdles were handled by Dave Medina, Frank Vargas, and Bradley Loop. 04 Pole vaulters, Ivan Wood, senior, and Stan Es- trada, junior placed first in seven of the eight meets. Nick Lawrence consistently placed in the shot put. Top broad jumpers were Loop and Vargas. Doug Bowen, senior, and Frank Mannen, sophomore, were the top high jumpers. The B team won five of their eight meets. Dave Rightmer, sophomore, broke the B rec- ord with a spurt of 10:1 this season. He placed first in every B competition. David Gonzales did well in the 660, winning seven of eight meets. High point man on the B squad was Jim Fowler, a hurdler and broadjumper. B. The Mustangs had Eddie Myers, catcher, Herb Smith, first, Mitsu Hamada, second, Dick Couser, shortg Bill McCullough, third, and Rich- ard Allen, Mike Stapley, Steve Thomas, Bernie Thomas, and Bob Prahl in the outfield. Benny Alto and Bill Bruns did the pitching. The highest batting average was held by Couser with a .241. Others above .200 were Stapley at .214 and Allen at .233. The Mustangs averaged four runs a game. Alto and Bruns were very even in pitching statistics. Alto 107 hurled 43 innings, allowing 36 runs, 43 hits, striking out 37 and walking 32. Bruns tailed with 42 frames, giving up 26 runs, 41 hits, fan- ning 29 and walking 7. In all losing games, but the Mar Vista tussle, the Mustangs usually gave the opponents the game with their errors. However, when the Mustangs hustled and played heads-up ball, they won. These figures may not be entirely correct, due to the fact that the HOOFPRINT went to press before the end of the season.
