Throughout the past nine years her good humor, her unselfish ways, and her friendliness endeared her to both her students and fellow teachers. “|. the path of the just is as a shining light that Shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” Proverbs: 4:18 sitet Oe Principal — Mr. Matthew K. Although he is no longer with us, Dieter still lives on in our minds and hearts. Everyone at SDUHS, whether a friend or just a classmate, knew Dieter as a good student and a gentleman. He was noted for his good manners and friendliness. Few students will ever be of his high caliber. San Dieguito will find it hard to forget him. HONORED PEOPLE . Bak 102 With the sounding of the last gun that ended the Escondido game, the Mustang Foot- ball Team completed their most successful season in six years. The team this year, by sheer will to win, accomplished something that San Dieguitoites have been waiting for a long time—namely a winning season. The fighting Mustangs (and they were really fighters this year!) hung up a 5 won, 4 lost record. The season opened on a good note when the team traveled to San Jacinto and handed a tough Tiger eleven a 13 to 6 lacing. Bol- stered by confidence from this victory, the boys were not to be denied against a fast Elsi- nore team. The final score read San Dieguito 28, Elsinore 6. After crushing the Army-Navy Academy, the Mustangs were waiting for their traditional foe, Oceanside. In a very hard fought game, in which Gail Coleman played one of the best games in S. D. history, the team tasted defeat for the first time by a score of 13 to 0. As the season rolled on, it became more and more apparent that the improvement of such boys as Fred Drouillard, John Benvenuto, Stan Fowler, Frank Vargas, and Gail Coleman would insure our team of a good year. Cole- man and Vargas, along with Bill Hunt, pro- vided the team with a tough defense, and the tremendous power running of Benvenuto a nd the driving efforts of Drouillard provided the spark that ignited the offense to run up a total of 1500 yards rushing during the season. In the opinion of many, the Mustangs’ best game was played against Mar Vista. The fine offensive and defensive work of the team en- abled the underdog Mustangs to come out on top by a 20-12 score. Part of the success of this year’s team must be given to the fine leadership shown by the following Senior members: captain, Gail Coleman, Stan Fowler, Bill Hunt, Bill Owens, Phil Shackley, Douglas Duke, Yukio Hamada, Bob Lyman, Bob Francisco, and Bob Mitchell. Awards for outstanding performances were given to Gail Coleman and Fred Drouillard, both of whom were placed on the first string All Avocado League Team and to Frank Var- gas and John Benvenuto who made honorable mention on this all-league team. John Benve- nuto was also chosen by the coaches at San Dieguito as the most valuable player of the year. —K.A.B. SCORES SS, Dice As Peeve bees 135 Sani JACNtOw ator 6 SE Dike pontaiedie ie 23.) They won their first five games. Mission Bay, their next opponent, broke the Mustang’s back with a 73-35 wallop. The Mustangs couldn’t seem to get back on their feet after that. In the pre-season games the Mustangs won 7 and lost four. This includes two tournaments. In the Kiwanis Tournament the Mustangs won one and lost one. The win was over Julian 62-59. The loss was to Vista. In the other tournament held at Banning, the Mustangs won none and lost two. Starting league play, the Mustangs were considered the team to beat, but it didn’t end up that way. San Dieguito was dropped by Oceanside in the first league game with a score of 83 to 48. In the second league game against Vista, the hoopsters from San Dieguito looked like they were coming back to their win- ning ways, however, being downed by Vista 51-45. The Mustangs did, however, cause a 39- 37 overtime upset over league-leading Mar Vista. That loss knocked Mar Vista out of the championship for the Avocado League. Although the Mustangs ended up in last place for the second straight time, they gained a lot of experience. The team will only lose two seniors, Phil Thorpe and Addison Carr. There were three sopho- mores on the team this year. They were Mike Shores, Jim Mitchell,.and Tom Ruth- erford. Also on the team were the Juniors Doug Bowen, Rich Lohf, and Garry Hennis. The Mustangs didn’t have a very success- ful year, but the hopes for a championship team look brighter for next year. The over-all standings for the season was 10 wins and 14 losses. Their record was 2-3 in league competi- tion. (These totals do not include the totals of the Escondido meet.) Although their record doesn’t show it, San Dieguito did very well as a whole; for in the previous years, the squad won only one meet. Most of this year’s team had graduated from the victoryless B and C squad, and only 4 or 5 had had varsity experience. The Mustangs opened the season with a good showing in a losing cause against the strong Mission Bayers. The final score was 6614-3714. They lost their next meet also, by the score of 64-38, to powerful E] Cajon. Their first victory took place over Chula Vista, 57-47, and it was well earned. In league play San Dieguito lost to Ocean- side, 56-48; bowed to Vista, 5814-4524, and took defeat from Coronado, 6424-3914. Had the Mus- tangs won the final event of the day, the relay, they would have beaten Oceanside, one of the strongest teams in the league. San Dieguito’s victories in the league were those over Fall- brook 70 5 6 - 33 1 6, and those Mar Vista 58-46. There were many outstanding competitors on this year’s squad. John Benvenuto, Dave Rightmer, a fresh- man, and Sonny Drouillard were the outstand- ing dashmen. Drouillard and Phil Shackley were tops in the 440. Kenny Cowin did a great job in the half mile, winning all but three of the eight meets in which he competed. Sophomore Ardin Wright also did a commendable job in the 880. In the mile Joe Graciano and David Gon- zales were the top men. The high and low hur- dles were handled by two juniors, Dave Medina and Frank Vargas and they both did very well. Medina specializes in the highs and Vargas in the lows. The field events had two big men. One was a shot putter who, out of eight meets, won seven. He broke the school record by four inches in one meet. He is senior Bill Burton who will be sorely missed by the Mustangs next year. The other man who was outstanding in the field events was Jens Morrison who, twice this year, won both the high-jump and broad- jump in one meet. Addison Carr headed San Dieguito in pole-vaulting, probably the Mus- tangs’ weakest event. San Dieguito’s B squad went without a vic- tory for the season. Standouts were: George Darrough and David Barajas, sprints; Darrel Lewis, hurdles; Al Thomas, shot; Robert Clem- ens in the high-jump and 1320; Dick Barnhart, - 660; and Steve Bowman, pole vault and high- jump. Shining C’s this year were: John Martin, Mitchell, and Rightmer, sprints; Gunter Amt- mann, and Irvin Gross, 660; Jim Fowler and Gaylord Odle, low hurdles and broad-jump; Stan Estrada and Martin, shot; Ricky Montez, high- jump and hurdles; and Ivan Wood and Estrada, pole vault. The C’s broke three school records—the 440 relay, the shot by Estrada, and the 100 by Rightmer. Next year Coach Zeno, in his second year at San Dieguito, will have the majority of this year’s squad back. Graduating this year will be Shackley, Burton, and Carr. Some of this year’s stars returning will be Benvenuto, Drouillard, Medina, Vargas, Morrison, Graciano, Gonzales, Wright, Mitchell, and Rightmer. With these boys and many more from the B’s and C’s, San Dieguito has a bright future ahead. en EN UN (ete ene re ey UE ea EE ETE EU UA 1ST TAAL A AN ANA HMA VARSITY TRA CK: Row 1, D. Medina, J. Those were two words that were synonymous with the 1956 Mustang baseball team, which won the Avocado League championship last spring. With that desire and hustle the San Dieguito nine battled all the way to the SCIF finals. History again repeats itself, for the words, desire and hustle, play a big part in the suc- cess and failure of this year’s team. Even while this Hoofprint is going to press, the 1957 Mustangs are heavy contenders for the Avo- cado crown. Of course, this year’s squad sorely misses the five seniors from last year’s team, as well as Greg Arnett, who was lost to a knee injury. The five seniors were Bud Biddle, Wayne Na- kagawa, Ben Corrales, George Van Es, and Chuck Salbato. The graduation of these five left a huge gap in the Mustang lineup, but the gap has been filled in by new and capable replacements. ; A bright spot in the Mustang picture is the fact that they have seven lettermen from last year’s championship squad. The returnees wel- comed back by Coach Don Crickmore are Rich 115 Salbato, George Seckington, Marlin Matlock, Bob Reyna, Bob Lyman, Ben Alto, and Yukio Hamada. With the exception of Alto, all the lettermen are seniors this year. Richard Sal- bato, a mainstay on the S.D. pitching staff, can be the difference between a championship and second or third place. George Seckington and Marlin Matlock are another pair who have greatly helped the Mustang cause. This spring San Dieguito has six newcom- ers on the roster, and they have performed much better than was anticipated. Stan Fowl- er, one of these newcomers, has played spark- ling ball for the Mustangs at second base, while Ernie Polloreno, another newcomer, has done equally well in the outfield and on the mound for the Mustangs. Other new faces are Chuck Lyman, Richard Allen, Richard Couser, and Steve Thomas, all of whom have helped the Mustangs. Thus far in the season, hustle and spirit have been high for San Dieguito. If this hustle and drive is kept up, SDUHS can expect an- other good year from the Mustang horsehiders. —Y.H. Yukio Hamada Bob Lyman . Inexperience and ner- vousness resulted in an erratic offense, but this team put up a very strong defense all year. Under the leadership of Captain Richard Allen and Most Valuable Player Steve ‘“Rughead” Bowman, these boys showed a willingness to work and a strong desire to learn. At the end of the season they were as strong as any team in the league. “B” BASKETBALL Row One: T. Philips; D. Jolly; R. Bissonnette; J. Fleming; M. Devany; S. Coach. Matsumoto; B. Stillman; A. In twenty games San Dieguito won four, three in league play. The one pre-league victory was over La Jolla, 29-23. Two of the Colts victories were over Mar Vista, 36-32 in the first game and 38-33 in the second. Vista was their other victory, falling 39-30. With a league record of 3 wins and 9 losses the colts finished in a tie with Vista for fourth place. For his great play on offense and defense, Harold Johnson richly deserved the awards of “Team Captain” and “Most Valuable Player.” 119 Montes; T. R. Douglas; R. S. Coach Jack Wilkins, who was in his first year of coaching at San Dieguito, will have all of this year’s team back with the exception of Johnson, Fleming, Bissonette, and Montez who will have the opportunity to play Varsity ball next season. Sn EN ahha NNER emer nL “B”’ at GA TRACK San Dieguito’s B track squad had a very dis- appointing year as they went victoryless in nine meets. The C team, though, had a fine 4 win— 5 loss season, with 3 victories and 3 defeats coming in league competition. This league rec- ord represents the best of any athletic team at San Dieguito this year, not including baseball. Both the B’s and C’s dropped their first two meets. The B’s lost 83-12 to their first oppon- ent, Mission Bay, and they lost 81-14 to El Cajon. The C’s were downed in their first and second outings, with scores of 49-28 and 23-54 respectively. Against their third foe of the season, Chula Vista, the B’s were dropped 73-18; but the C’s won easily, the score being 57-20. The first two meets in league play ended with both teams being on the losing side. To Oceanside the B’s lost with a score of 60-33, and the C’s, 40-37. The B’s lost to Vista, 7114- 22%, and the C’s lost, 46-31. Against Fallbrook the B’s were downed, 68- 23, but the C’s were victorious, 62-15. The B’s made their best showing of the year against Coronado when they were nipped by only a 49-45 tally. The C’s, though, made their worst showing as they lost, 66-10. However, in this meet, most of the better C’s ran for the B’s leaving the C’s very weak. The C’s won their last two meets over Mar Vista, 59-18, and 54-23 over Escondido. The B’s lost by scores of 67-22 and 82-12 to close out the season. The B’s who were outstanding this year were George Darrough and David Barajas, dashes; Dick Barnhart, 660; Darrell Lewis, hurdles; Row One: D. Palmer, D. Barnhart, J. Sheetz, I. Wood, J. Fowler, 120 G. Amtmann; Row Two: J. Martin, Steve Bowman, high jump and pole vault; and Al Thomas, shot put. Other competitors who turned in good efforts were Gunter Amtmann, 660, Robert Clemens, 1320 and high jump; Robin Allen, shot; and Ivan Wood, pole vault. The C’s had many outstanding men: In the 100 and 180 dashes, John Martin, Dave Right- mer, and Jim Mitchell were tops. Gunter Amt- mann and Irvin Gross were the best 660 men. Amtmann won every time he ran the event, 6 times in C competition and 2 times in the B division. In the 120 low hurdles, Jim Fowler and Gay- lord Odle stood out. Ivan Wood, Jim Dean, and Stan Estrada were the key pole vaulters; and Ricky Montes the best high jumper. Fowler and Odle were the best in the broad jump and Estrada and Martin in the shot. Three school records were broken by the C’s this past year. Before the season started, the record in the 100 was 10:9. Mitchell then lowered it to 10:8, but Rightmer lowered it even further as he ran it in 10:5, which is now the record. The original shot put record was 42 feet before Estrada pushed the 8 pound ball 45’5” against Mar Vista. The 440 relay record was bested in the Es- condido meet when the combined speeds of Mitchell, Fowler, Martin, and Rightmer broke the old record by 7 10 of a second in the time of 47:6. In post season meets, this relay team a sec- ond in the Mustang Relays and a second in the Vista Relays, breaking the school record in the Mustang Relays.
