.QL-mm- asv, 'mawlvxnmnsmwuf The A rfzszllz San Dlcgrf Ifomfirfmllffiglz Sclzwl 1955 - Q 1 n 2 2 IIEIIICATIU The class of 1955 will be the last to be graduated from the educational facility known as San Diego Vocational High School. Beginning next fall, another high school in this community will assume the job of granting the diploma to graduates of technical curricula. Dedication, at this moment, can only be to the school itself, the San Diego Vocational High School as we knew it, and to the hundreds of students, faculty and administrators who contributed to its fine traditions and outstand- ing achievement in the fourteen years of its history. In the midst of this happy time, the time of our high school graduation, we pause to give thanks and praise, and, a little wistfully to bid fond adieu to a proud institution, whose cold stone walls belie the substance of warm humanity that was always at its heart. 3 In Memoriam Richard G. Brown, smiling companion, faithful friend, whose death early this year is a loss we cannot measure 4 AMessage Beginning September, 1941, the High School Division of our school was officially organized. During the last fourteen years, several hundred young men and women have graduated from the school with a high school diploma, and also with adequate skills and general education to enter employment in San Diego's business and industry. We are in the process of reorganizing the High School Division. In September, 1955, students will become regular members of San Diego High School Student Body and will continue to get their technical training in our technical shops. It is the feeling of all concerned that this new plan will improve the educational opportimities for Technical High School students. We know that you graduates want to share with us in thanking the community for the new facilities that are being provided and the improved opportunities that will be available to future Technical High School students. Best wishes to each of you as you take your place in the community. Walter L. Thatcher 6 Walter L. Thatcher Principal San Diego Vocational High School 7 Mrs. Margaret D. This year's Cross-Country squad was one of the best to represent Vocational since the beginning of competition in this sport at the school. An unusually large number of boys reported for practice at the call of Coach Olsen, and it was this strength in depth which accounted in large measure for our success. The squad was quickly rounded into shape for the season. The team finished the season with a record of seven victories and six defeats in thirteen meets. Among the schools Vocational encountered this year Qrigpl were Point Loma, Lincoln, Kearny, Vista, San Diego, wwf' j 5, St. Augustine, Grossmont, Escondido, Rancho Del ' f Campo, Helix and Hoover. In the San Diego State College Invitational, we placed third in competition with nine other schools. Against eight teams in the Mt. San Antonio In- vitational, Vocational again placed third. 57 , Z 247 if I I 1 ,f A K I 1 E531 vi.: fmt lj 1 A Sports WRESTLING Standing il to rj: Clarence Mizzles, John Lacko, Paul Parker, Richard Magargal, Dee Shoemaker, Fred Canaday, Carl Mullins, Theron Baynard, Don Hargrave, Henry Manor, David Biggs, Skip Sullivan. In the fine tradition of past Vocational wrestling teams, this year's squad again distinguished themselves with an enviable record on the mat. Sparked by such dependable performers as Paul Parker, Bill Miller, Don Hargrave, John Lacko, Al Carreon and Gary Lepper, the boys easily won their share of the meets, and but for injuries to key men at inopportune times, would certainly have run up an even more brilliant record. Lacko and Lepper nursed broken bones a good part of the season, and Hargrave carried badly bruised cartilage into several matches. Most-valuable-man award went to Paul Parker, who came Q' if Qxx through consistently with great showings in the clutch. fix The Star-of-the-Meet trophy went to Gary Lepper, who gf 'J' bagged that award with solid performances in every X F. meet entered. X' With a record of five wins and three losses, Al Q I Carreon copped third place in league competition, and gpg- W, .T -1 won additional laurels by being elected team captain. 5 Both Bill Miller and Don Hargrave capped excellent ohpr. NCAA champion San Francisco and Vocational had one thing in common this year: neither had a home court. In addition, Coach Petersen opened the season with only two returning lettermen, Captain and center Paul Muro and guard Bill Wells. Plagued by a skimpy bench and lack of height, the boys were hard-pressed throughout the season as they sought victories over some of the most uniformly impressive hardwood talent seen hereabouts in years. The Kiwanis Tournament is a notable example of their tremendous efforts in the face of these handicaps: Voca- tional extended semi-finalist San Dieguito to a bitter overtime effort before succumbing to their highly-touted foe, and in virtually every encounter saw sizeable leads dwindle and vanish because they had not the reserve strength to spell a hard-fighting, constantly-charging varsity. Most-Valuable-Man award went to Captain Paul Muro, who climaxed a great sports career at Vocational with this last brilliant court effort. Team co-captains were Paul Cirinelli, sophomore, and senior guard Bill Wells. 59 ' lc It C xx, Him I , g.1.,,'.-,1t1gmj' y, Vg X w ill mt l f M xr 'NWN Q 1 'xx Q, ish . fsffl f 'L' A i 'K tl 'ff uf' X Y , I li , xl' parts WEIGHT TRAINING Don Hargrave demonstrates a lock-out from loose press position with a ponderous 123 lbs. for Magargal and Bryant lw'2'W'XtMiWwXn ' big YV - 'Wg Q 5 - ff A.-f-f1,1,.f W , 251. ?jxKs 1-1 jf' NMXX Q ' ,, 44 3 SX xt ,I Vs V X sl. l ' H X kflax X' rx My Bench Press with 73 by Art Fortier, with Carl Mullins and George Herrmann doubting it 60 3- ? o YXXAB S The Artisan tail These are the people who combined to create this book.
