'At least we have no place to go but up ' Coach David Smokey Gaines' men's basketball squad supported that cliche this year, rebounding from last place and a 6-21 overall record in 1980 to finish the 1980-81 season with a 15-12 mark, good for fifth place in the Western A thletic Conference. Recruiting was the reason for the reversal of form in 1981 Gaines brought in new players from all across the country in his second year as head coach. Two of the new players. Zack Jones and Michael Cage, started every game of the season. Jones, a junior guard from Washington. D.C.. led the team in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game Cage, a freshman from West Memphis. Arkansas, was among the nation's leaders in rebounding, pulling down an average of 13.1 per game Both Jones and Cage have received honorable mentions on the All- WAC Team Returning starters Tony Gwynn. Eddie Morris, and Eddy Gordon combined with Jones and Cage gave the Aztecs a solid foundation in 1981. Gwynn. a senior, finished his fine four-year career here by being selected to the All-WAC second team for the second year in a row. Gwynn will hand over the point guard responsibilities to Keith Smith, a transfer student from University of Michigan.
