Few other publications retained from your college days will probably become more valued than this attempt to capture the spirit of that period in your life. A Yearbook is, and should remain, a way to bring into focus all the events and activities that shaped your memories of San Diego State. Long after the detailed information of text and lecture notes have become replaced by the more immediate concerns of career, family, and community responsibilities, the photo6 and quotations within these pages will allow you a well deserved moment to reflect upon how richly appointed your life has become as a result of these many changes. I encourage you to look upon each new chapter of your life as the most exciting. No era, be it your college days or any other singular interest, will afford you the complete experience that living with an eye toward tomorrow permits. Each of you are entering into the main- stream of a world characterized as hopelessly doomed by some and 1 ripe with new horizons by others. In the final analysis only your continued desire to use the tools of learning already made available to you can be of assistance. You have labored long and hard to begin this quest; never be willing to do less or settle for less as your journey progresses. I am grateful that among the many commitments each of you assume during your stay at the University, some are willing to go a step further and bring all of us the joy we find within the Yearbook. AND CUTE 13 Getting Up . . . 15 17 GOOD TIMES TO BE REMEMBERED 18 CAMPUS CONCERTS NEW WAVE JAZZ FROM LEISURE HOURS green lawns and its casual atmosphere, affords its 33.000 students the ability to study, relax, socialize, or just plain sleep. 20 SPENT MAKING FRIENDS SDSU offers its students a wide variety of clubs and organizations. The clubs range from surfing to service and accounting to art. Also associated with SDSU are 15 Greek Fraternities and 10 Greek Sororities. Even though there is such a vast array of clubs, they all share one goal ... To promote friendship and school spirit. 21 Everything in the%Jjjg Garden 23 bv Edward AI bee The Malcolm A. Low Library is conveniently located in the center of San Diego State University campus. The library wxis constructed in 1971. named after Malcolm A. Love, under whose presidency from 1952-1971 San Diego State University's enrollment increased phenomenally. The Library was established to further the educational process by providing a total of 727.730 books and periodicals for use by students. Resources include microfiche and micropaque cards, microfilm reels, college catalogs, scientific reports, and phonograph records. The Library provides all United Motions and Organizations of American Slates publications in addition to other national and international publications. Malcolm A. Love Library staff tours each semester to assist students In the use of the many facilities of- fered by the library. With present enrollment at San Diego State University, reaching 333)00. the library is now utilized more frequently than ever before. A LOVE UBEAftV j_fe 24 Losing seasons in sports are often made more palatable by saying. 'At least we have no place to go but up ' Coach David Smokey Gaines' men's basketball squad supported that cliche this year, rebounding from last place and a 6-21 overall record in 1980 to finish the 1980-81 season with a 15-12 mark, good for fifth place in the Western A thletic Conference. Recruiting was the reason for the reversal of form in 1981 Gaines brought in new players from all across the country in his second year as head coach. Two of the new players. Zack Jones and Michael Cage, started every game of the season. Jones, a junior guard from Washington. D.C.. led the team in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game Cage, a freshman from West Memphis. Arkansas, was among the nation's leaders in rebounding, pulling down an average of 13.1 per game Both Jones and Cage have received honorable mentions on the All- WAC Team Returning starters Tony Gwynn. Eddie Morris, and Eddy Gordon combined with Jones and Cage gave the Aztecs a solid foundation in 1981. Gwynn. a senior, finished his fine four-year career here by being selected to the All-WAC second team for the second year in a row. Gwynn will hand over the point guard responsibilities to Keith Smith, a transfer student from University of Michigan. Graduating seniors on this year's team were Gwynn. forward Marcus Hamilton, center Drew- Head. and guards Joe Mendoza and Mark Smith Hepner Hall — Handy Tower Walter R. Hepner Hall is a beautiful. Spanish style building complex near the center of campus _ _ Bordered on the north by Hardy Center, this I. shaped complex runs south to the President's wing of the Administration Building and then west to the Lit- tle Theater and Speech Arts Building Hepner Hall is constructed of adobe and wood and is roofed in Spanish tile. It houses one of the longest classrooms on campus, which is capable o) holding 150 students. Basic science classes often fill the room to capacity. Hepner Hall was built by Franklin D Roosevelts Work Projects Administration in 1940. and was named after a former President of San Diego State College. There are two landmarks housed in this hall the mission style bells, which are often considered a sym- bol of San Diego State University, sit atop Hepner Hall facing the south end of campus. Monty Mon- tezuma. the university's mascot, sits on the lawn in- side the L shaped quad. CALIFORNIA 92182 This 1981 Yearbook was produced as a service to the graduating seniors of an Diego State University. We hope this yearbook reflects some of the memorable times you had through college. This yearbook has been published by the membership of the Circle K Club with the help of the Alumni Associates. Circle K, which is sponsored by Kiwanis is the world's largest collegiate cormunity and campus service organization. Just a few of Circle X's service projects include: A row-a-thon for Multiple Sclerosis; assisting at many Special Olympic events; the cleaning up of unsightly litter on Montezuma Road; and the building of a new storage shed for the campus child care center. The proceeds from the sale of this book make these many projects possible. We would like to thank those on our staff: Julie Arenz, Daniel Barr, Mary Both Casement, Kenneth It. Elliott, Sue Ennis, Carolyn Lobb, Martin Maim, Nathaniel Oliva, Vicki Prats, Ray Ryman, Iynda Sczon, Denise Stebbins, Far. and Diane Turnbull, and Jackie Williams. The club skis weekly in Mission Bay. but the devoted members will be found on weekend trips to the Colorado River. U. since 1949, led a very productive year in 1981. Under the leadership of President June Yoggerst. the Alpha Phi’s Fall Rush produced 35 beautiful pledges and the Rush Quota A ward for excellence in attaining the total chapter size. The Phis enjoyed all the activity of Greek week, finishing second overall and placing first in ”Sorority sing.” Several functions with the Alpha Chi Omegas brought our houses closer, and we were honored with the award for best sister sorority. Alpha Phi tries to stress academics, resulting in the number one grade point average Jor irtt Alpha Phi’s Active chapter among sororities. Our Philanthropy, the Heart Fund, was at the core of many fundraisers and functions for the benefit of the cause. The ”Jump Rope for the Heart” helped to raise funds for the Charity. Kappa Delta's Beta Rho was established at S.D.S.U. in May. 1949. and it was the first sorority house on campus. Kappa Delta has 104 chapters in the United Slates. Under the leadership of president Ann Kulischak. vice-president Anna Marie Covarrubias. treasurer Carolyn Jones, secretary Cheryl Keith, editor Karen Wilson, panhellenic Kelly Doherty, and social Patty Wegnedt. the Kay Dee's enjoyed many successful social events. Some of these include: a Western Ho-down. a Medieval Festival, a Palm Springs retreat, a Scholarship Day and Dinner. Founders Day. and a spaghetti dinner for the philanthropy crippled children.
