Womlib Classes Liberty for Women No matter what your opinion of San Diego State's Women's Studies Program, there can be no question as to its purpose. It is designed in an attempt to repair the damage done to women by the omission and dis- tortions of traditional education. Its courses empha- size ways of releasing the power and potential, as well as enhancing the personal dignity of women. Establishment of a Women's Studies Program at San Diego State marks the first such full-scale program in the country. The idea for the program was con- ceived last fall by certain faculty, students, and women of the commu nity. Approval came last spring, and en- titled the program to employ five part-time faculty to teach eight courses. Also included in the approval is a visiting professor position, it was filled by Dr. Roberta Salper of the University of Pittsburgh. Program chairman this year was Prof. jacqueline Wertz, a mem- ber of SDSC psychology faculty. Other women actively involved in the program at State include Prof. loyce Nower of the English department and Dr. Lois Kessler from Health Education. Prof. Barbara Kessell, a gradu- ate student in English literature, was brought here from Chicago to help with the program. Reaction, by both men and women, proved im- mediate, with most courses being filled to capacity. Over 300 students enrolled in the program in the 1970-71 school year-at a ratio of about four women to one man. As often happens with any type of social improve- ment program, jokes and criticisms were aimed at WSP from its inception. Perhaps there will be less of such jesting when the ideals of the program are realized and women are given the chance to function as seri- ous, responsible human beings. 28 E 2 2 3 2 5 2 ,Q Q if 2 i r 4 E 2 if I 2 2 li 2 X t 2 5 ? t 1 2 5 l l i r 5 t w l 4 l l l 4 l Student mothers, fathers and children gather at the Child Care rally in defense for a chill care project on campus.
