The pewerhouse Spartans were out to run up a big score to atone for the beating they had re- ceived the previous week at the hands of Stanford, The thousands of Son Jose fans who come to see this slaughter sat in dazed bewilderment 05 the underdog Aztecs outfought mighty Sparta in every department for the first 27 minutes of the game. With the first holf almost gone the ever alert Spartans capitalized on two San Diego mistakes, made two scores in no time at all, and left the fieid of halfrime with a 14-0 lead. The second half was as hard fought es. the first, with the nodherners garnering two more tallies. The iocols fought a good fight but were hard hit by injuries including one which put rugged Jim Erkenbeck out of the game The final score read San Jose 26, Son Diego 0. SonJose. . . . . 26 JIM ERKENBECK ED FLETCHER San Diego Thanks to a series of bad breaks that bordered 0n the catastrophic, the Montezumons lost their I950 home debut to the potent Marine Recruit Depot before one of the largest crowds of the season. First of these come when Art Preston's brilliant 60- yurd opening kickoff return was nullified by a clipping penalty deep in Aztec territory. The second come two plays later when Marine and Bobby Bel! intercepted a pitchout 0nd rambled 24 yards to score. With the clock running out in the second quarter a great series of runs and a pass to end Chet Nicholsm set up what appeared to be 0 sure San Diego touchdown. Chick Embrey powered to the one-yard line as the half ended with the score 21-0 in favor of the Marines. The Marines opened the second half with quarter- back Jess Flores tossing to Skeet Quinlan who rambled 73 yards for a Devildog touchdown. Coming back with a bang the collegions scored their first touchdown as Bud Milke nailed 0 Leon Pormo pass in the end zone. Shortly thereafter little Jess Thompson ' culminated 0 series of passes to end Joe Golindo and back Freddie Bates by circling end from the one-yord line. AZTECS CHAMPIONS A band of Santa Barbara Gauchos came into the last game of the season ail set to pulverize- their Border City rivals and don the crown of CCAA Champions. They had obviously been read- ing their publicity notices, some of which rated them a tour-toucthwn edge over the Aztecs. Their confidence lasted until the opening kickoff and then to the amazement of the Santa Barbara fans the northerners were torn wide open by a title-bound bunch of Sun Diegons. From the opening kickoff it was plain that something was wrong. The vaunted Gaucho backs were lucky if they made the line of scrimmage and their aerial game was conspicuous by its absence. This was due not to any luck of ability on the part of the Gauchos but because they were meeting a team that would not be denied. Porma passed to Chet Nicholson to set up the first score with Chick Embrey going over. Preston scored the second. In the third quarter Porma passed to Embrey for the third score and in the final period Embrey passed to Fermun McPhotter for the fourth. Hufford made all four conversions. In the next tiltr played here at home against a supposedly weaker Navy team, the State bunch just couldnit seem to shake loose their offense and the score did a repeat with TraPac 0, State Fresh 0. As the Papoose squad took off for Pepperdine they were all for breaking this so far Scoreiess season and were intending to come out On top. In contrast to their previous games, Braadbent's boys unleashed a powerful, driving offensive sparked by big Bob Lyons who played a whole of a ball game. With the first touchdown of the year made by Phil Prokop, and followed by another by Gene Seiben, the Frosh were on the move, winning 14-6 after a hard-fought game. By now the Fresh were on their way to their first undefeated season in almost IO years and it was Gene Seiben who again scored, making two touchdowns against the favored Oceanside- Carlsbad J.C. Although the Papoose squad, worked over by Coach Harry Broadbent and Coach Jim Dowd, were the underdogs in their final game, they managed to hold El Centro J.C. team to o 7-7 tie. it was a see-saw battle oil the way but the Fresh club managed to keep their slate clean to finish the season.
