Text from Pages 1 - 146 of the 1957 volume:

159 Mr. Thatcher Spealw Dynamic San Diego continues to grow daily in population, industry and wealth. ln keeping with this growth, the need to expand and improve education continues to challenge our city, state and nation. On November 6, l 956 the electorate of this community voted bonds to complete our present campus. Shortly thereafter, the San Diego Unified School District purchased land for a second Junior College to be built as the need develops in the future. These facts show that San Diegans appreciate the necessity for and the place of the Junior College in the total picture of post- highschool education. The members of the class of i957 will be confronted with great opportunities, challenges and responsibilities. Congratula- tions and best wishes to each and every graduate! E! bedicativn During the three short but eventful years that Mr. Walter Thatcher has been Principal of the San Diego Junior College, he has faced many un- precedented problems. Among these was the transfer of the junior college facilities from the Son Diego High School campus and from other outlying centers to the new l4th street site, Another important and difficult task ac- complished has been the reorganization and adjustment of curricular offerings and cataloging in anticipation of the visit of the accreditation team from the Western College Association. ln spite of the varied administrative duties resting upon his shoulders, Mr. Thatcher has always kept a warm interest in all worth-while student and faculty activities. His frank, open approach to any problem and his fairness in decisions have made him liked and respected. To Mr. Walter Thatcher the Staff sincerely dedicates this tenth edition of the LEGEND. new! seq if Q ,. , --f7 j ., NMLEWW 1 Prvgreuiale W XE modern I Succeuful Cen ten M fidminia tration . . page I6 7acalt9 . . page Z0 flcfiafia . . page 36 01-ganqationaf . . page 72 Sparta . . page 94 gl-adaateA . . page IZ4 f -vurj iagrf SWL V,f5'g,,., -1' - faq- wif rg-fi' 3155511-:5:v, Jfi W 3I' SJ' , ' W1- R ia., ff 'Lfffb 'kkk - ' ' 'fiffilyi fjn:zg7g:f'577gbgv, ., .fi f5f15f',Ti7fii'?EfE2fif15fv-':-,Z.!7Y ' ' I f: f .,,, .. Guided by a profound respect for knowledge and advancement, students fill class rooms to capacity each semester. Designed for administration and general education, this year-old structure has well produced its offspring of better educated citizens. As the ivy grows higher and the walls bleach whiter, you personally can be proud to reminisce about the school that opened new hori- zons for you. 'X-Q--..,,, IO Tech nic I ' fducation Fresh, new and humming with activi- ty, this three-story composition of con- crete has many instructional devices in its interior, Within its modern classrooms and spacious shops the power tools, car engines, and radios depict just a few ot the vocations learned here. On the third floor, psychology, speech and English represent much of the soul, voice, and heart of our great educational system, This new structure typifies the Junior College as it seeks to educate both heart and hand. Designed principally for education in technical studies this building draws some of the finest instructors in California and has promoted hundreds of ambitious students. I2 Ku ine A fcfacativn This building, the most venerable of Junior College buildings, has an aura of mellowness, which casts its spirit upon those who are inspired within its confines. Soon to be replaced by a modern structure on the new campus, we could use General McArthur's axiom in describ- ing its fate . . . old soldiers never die they just fade away. Dr. Loomis Morton Ganaway has been the adviser ofthe Alpha Delts since the original group of nine friends and brothers united as a fraternity. Over four hundred men have been initiated into the fra- ternity since its inception. The Alpha Delts maintain an active athletic and social program. They have won the lnter-Fra- ternity Athletic Trophy for eight years and are rep- resented in all varsity sports. Socially, the Alpha Delts had rush dances at the Rowing Club, and con- cluded the year with their Tenth Annual Dinner Dance at El Morocco, at which time Mr, Alpha Delta , secretly selected by the membership, was an- nounced. Edward Spooner was president of the fra- ternity first semester, and Hoyt Rath, second semes- ter. The colors of the fraternity are blue and white, and the fraternity flower is the carnation. Commanded by head coach George Schutte, inspired by line coach Bob Downs, and spirited by backfield coach Jesse Thomp- son the Knights felt victory in their blood. Although the Knights won only 3 and lost 6, this was by no means an indication that the giants of San Diego were the weakest team in the Conference, for they were highly respected by all opponents as a team not to be under-estimated. lt is well known to many JC students that the gridiron men of San Diego were usually on the short end of a narrow score and were unable to hit pay dirt in the final minutes of play. SDJC had such capable men as star quarterback Joe Duke who was selected as All-Conference during his -stay at Hoover , High School and has proved to be one of the finer QB's in local JC history . . . Lauro Saraspe, an ideal end, and noted for his defensive ability, a former All-City and SCIF selection at La Jolla High School . . . John Vierra who was switched from tackle to i guard to realize his potential. Coaches George Schutte, Jesse Thompson, and Bob Downs all agree that it was an extreme pleasure to work with the San Diego Junior College football team of 1956. i l i 98 1 27 2 C, uc ww xi, I 1 i f an 'K' Q F if Q- 'W ' ' ' ' T Y -L' 4 I -1 Q ,, . f T r Bob Maxwell Dave Donahue Gary Land Jay Abbinanti Cenfer Tackle Guard Guard Evan Wetherald Jim Weir LeRoy Taylor Edward Spooner Fullback Guard End End I if iw 'lr any -f 9- l ww TNQ. . The San Diego Junior College track team is lacking in depth and strength in its l957 season. Last year's team was in the number two spot in the league. Even though there are many speed merchants returning from last season, Coach Downs is in desperate need of more sprinters, discus throwers, shot putters, pole vaulters and others to give the needed depth to the team. Midway through the season the local cindermen lost four of their top athletes: Wes Hill, Tony Sucec, Junior Jackson and Fred Puliafico which hurt the Knights in their best events, the 440, half mile, mile relay, high hurdles, and discus. However, continued improvements were noted in Jerry Williams 880, John Vanderlinde in the high hurdles and Ed Bingham in the high jump. San Diego lost their first track meet on March 22, against Santa Monica City College, 67 to 55. On Friday, March 5, SDJC again were beaten by LA Valley, and LA Harbor. Never-the-less, the Knight tracksters have performed well in every event that they have undertaken and are highly respected by all opponents. grad ua teA ini Robert Olson President Sophomore Planning Committee ,gy Nunnelly Sims Vice-President I' K ,ig ., E Kay Ann Krivor Prom Chairman ,r 52' sotx 'ae' xr 1 ?acultq daIiAorA s gdxe s Mary Louise Burchill I Activities Chairman X l Not Shown Shirley Bateman Secretary Teofilo Esculano Treasurer X 5 I , . - i E s 5 l ,gi 5 '-s,,,x , 'V ' f ,. Joyful because many are continuing on into fields of higher education, and still others finding their places in a chosen occupation. Sad because of leaving behind a zealous staff of profes- sors, faculty, and administrative members. The Graduating Class extends the professors, faculty, administration and students its deep appreciation for making the San Diego Junior College a school of high standing. The patience and understanding of each professor in teaching the student is unmatched. Confronted with seemingly unsurmountable odds, they have always come through in the best way. Many years hence you may remember the guiding hand that one of these fine people gave, when you were in dire need of help.
