a message from the president i believe that 1953 will prove to be an historic year for the san diego junior college, because it was during the early months of this year that the plans and prospects of a separate and per- manent home for the entire program first began to take tangible shape. most of the land for the site has been purchasedg money has been voted for two major buildings and for physical educa- tion quartersg and the architect's plans should soon be on the drawing boards. there is also evidence that the people of san diego are at last beginning to appreciate the importance of a, strong junior college in the total picture of post high school education and to recognize that the absence of a junior college means depriving many young people of their educational oppor- tunity. this heartening progress would not have been possible without the devoted work of an outstand- ing faculty and the serious application to their daily lessons of many students, particularly the members of the class of june, 1953, who consti- tute our best evidence of the character and worth of our junior college. to these graduates i offer my most sincere congratulations!

these four students have been leaders since their en- rollment in junior college, occupying the highest posi- tions in student government and publications. They have always had a great interest in all activities and have created a lot of school spirit and good will which they have spread on the campus, throughout the city, and at other colleges where they have visited as representatives from the junior college. three of these four hold full-time jobs outside the college while the fourth works part-time. they are the ones who might have had the least time to give, but gave the most. cd custer, has served us two years as editor-in-chief of the college handbook, the scroll, and editor of the fortknightly, the junior college paper, president of the senior class. under custer's editorship the fort- knightly won two all-american awards from the collegiate press, a national journalism association, as well as many other minor awards. virginia pasto has been editor-in-chief of the legend for two years as well as a staff editor for the fort- knightly for three semesters and a commissioner of publications. sarah hopkins has been president of the student body of the night division for two semesters. prior to her presidency she filled minor positions in student government. hal ulrey was twice elected president of the a.a.8Ls. student body, one of these times as overall president of the student body of junior college. he has been successful in teaching parliamentary procedure, and in reactivating a student court where he served as judge. . virginia pasto sarah hopkins and leadership ed custer '--1' hal ulrey 2 VfZ'. f l M
