DR, JOHN ASELTINE President, San Diego Junior College la I.nnk Ahead . .. I952 will go down in the history ot the Junior College as the year when the citizens ol San Diego first began to talce an organized and active interest in the local education ot local high schoo-I graduates. It is too early to tell yet just what they will accomplish, but we do know that they believe in the Junior College and would lilce to see ,a plan adopted which would insure its tuture. Those ot us who have pioneered, who have endured the hard- ships ot inadequate and widely scattered facilities, have good reason lor feeling confident that the San Diego Junior College will eventually be a community educational institution amongthe leaders ot its lcind in the West. gjrfffsfg ww- awww, Vi-wma-rm Siu-vwzauzisuwy f 5 if , . ma...-M?.u.aA.r,,.s.M1s,,M,3. the Evening Center of the Junior more than 3l years of outstanding as principaiof the Evening Center since he directed the adult education program the outstanding programs of its kind in Friend . .. Perhaps no junior college in California otters a broader and more diversified program than does our Junior College. The richness ot our program compensates, to some ex- tent, tor the handicap ot not having adequate facilities and a more uni- tied administration. There are opportunities, notonly in business, technical, vocational, and general education, but there is also skillful counseling and guidance which is so impo-rtant to the post high school students. Through the activities of social and service organizations and through the operation of student controlled groups such as the Associated Stu- dent Council, the Inter-Club Council, the Fortlcnightly, and the Legend, students receive valuable aid in the development ot leadership, social, and cultural traits. Since the primary purpose ot this section ot the Legend is to illustrate the diversified lite ot the Junior College, names have been omitted in connection with the pictures. Perhaps you may tind pleasure, now .and in years to come, by identifying the students and teachers shown. Th 2 d Oor 5 it O Succe S5. Emma Ss x e,qoa001 X0 KCQQYNQ, asks xixdaoce, Xkage. PLAIIEME T .IDB Many students at the Junior College have part-time or Full-time employ- ment and are able thereby to gain valuable worlc experience as well as to supplement their incomes. iTtie Junior College placement function is under the direction ot Mr. Wintried Gier. This phase of the Junior College's service to students has been quite pleasing to both students and emplo-yers. As Mr. Gier expresses his two-fold responsibility: We secure students tor jobs as well as jobs tor students. As an indication ot the scope ot this service it may be pointed out that more than 275 referrals ol students to jobs have been made since January and of this number approximately 240 have been placed. Mr. Crier works iclosely with the San Diego Junior Employment Service and other em- ployment groups, but many ot his activities are independent ot such organ- izations, since many employers, pleased with the referrals from the Junior College, contact the school directly when they have job openings. William Bailey, l-lead Coach of the San Diego Junior College toot- ball team, completes tour years as mentor ot the Knights this year. His record tor the tour years is 2l wins and I6 losses. This will be Coach Bailey's last year as Knight coach, as he has been elevated to the position ot Coordinator ot Athletics ot the entire San Diego City Schools. Coach Bailey will be succeeded by his former assistant, John Brose. Coach Brose is well liked by the students and we pre- dict success tor him in his new position. The San Diego Junior College tootball season started with the Draft Board sending greetings to Bill Campbell, quarterback, soon atter the first game ot the season. The loss ot this valuable player plus a shortage ot material put a territic problem on the students and the coaching statt. For a while there was tear that the school would not have a team, but through the wondertul cooperation of students who had never played tootball going out for the team and working with those who were already outstanding players a good team was tormed. The team played well, but was out-classed and out-manned in most of the games. Outstanding Knights ot the year were Eddie Johns, Don Bonatus, and Cecil Steppe. Eddie Johns was selected captain and voted the most valuable player on the team. l-le also received the Eortknightly Trophy presented by the college newspaper tor his con- tribution to the team. Don Bonatus was selected on the All-Metropolitan Conterence second team as a reward tor his outstanding playing during the season. l-le scored the highest number ot individual points tor the season. Don scored eleven touchdowns against some very strong defensive teams with his pet play, the naked reverse. a ed Don Bonat s Dave Salas, Rocky Guzzo, Gil Rule, Ed Johns, Bruce Sanford, Ron Davis, George Brown, Ed Ga otta l-l McW Ilams Cecil Steppe, Dick Johnson.
