' DR. I OHN ASELTINE President of San Diego lunior College The San Diego Iunior Coiiegeiin 1951 faces both difficult problems and great opportunities. The problems are simply local manifestations of the dilemma in which the entire nation finds itself: how to preserve the essentials of our civilization and at the same time protect ourselves from our enemies. I am confident that we will solve these problems. The opportunities are apparent all about us: in a growing com- munity with steadily improving standards of education, and in a funior College which has already, in a few short years, 'become a necessary and important part of community life. Plans are even now being com- pleted for a greater San Diego lunior College. We expect to' be ready to convert opportunities into progress as they present themselves. I -loiin Aseitine. V Students and faculty memlaers alilze mourn the passing in February of Senora Maria Contreras, memlzer of the foreign lan- guage faculty of the Applied Arts and Science Center since 1946. Senora Contreras' teaching career in the San Diego City Schools was a long and honorable one. She had taught in the San Diego High School from 1926 to 1951 after previous teaching experience elsewhere. Sonora Contreras represented a scholarly tradition in the field of language teaching. ln addition to French and Spanish, which she taught, she was widely read in Old French, Old Spanish and Portuguese. Her lznowledge of Romance philology was amplified hy her intense interest in the spohen language, an interest which she communicated to her students. Her graduate study at Stanford, the University of California, and other institutions was motivated not only hy a desire to learn her subjects lzetter, hut lay a constant striving to become a lnetter teacher. ln these two goals she found a reason for her existence: to hnow more and to teach lbetter. Surely these are worthy goals for anyone who follows the teaching profession. To generations of high school and college students she hrought the finest and lmest in the culture of France, Spain and Latin Ameri- ca. She always represented the tradition of good teaching which Chaucer, in describing the Clerh of Oxenford, characterized in the line, And gladly wolde he lerne and gladly teachef' Harry E. lones, Acting Dean 1 Applied Arts and Science Center , San Diego lunior College -FV xx ' if J? f 1 '4 ,lg . .xdcfiuified .glluclenf e He traveled almost all that day vvithout meeting any adventure worth the trouble of relating, which put him into a kind of despairg for he desired nothing more than to encounter immediately some person, on whom he might try the vigor of his arms. Some authors say, that his first adventure was that of the pass called Puerto Lapiceg others, that of the mindmillsg but all that I could discover of certainty in this matter, and that I meet with in the annals of La Mancha, is, that he traveled all that day, and, toward the evening, he and his horse being heartily tired, and almost famished, Don Quixote, looking about him in hopes to discover some castle, or at least some shepherds cottage, there to repose and refresh himself g at last, near the road which he kept, he espied an inn, as welcome a sight to his longing eyes, as if he discovered a star directing him to the gate, nay, to the palace of his redemption. -Don Quixote de la Mancha, Miguel de.Cervantes Saavedra. 'Those whom thou seest yonder,' answered Don Quixote, 'with their long-extended arms, some of that detested race hav a size, that sometimes they reach two leagues in length.' 'Pray, look better, sir,' quoth Sancho, 'those things yonder are no giants, but windmills, and the arms you fancy, are their sails, which, being whirled about by the wind, make the mill go.' , 'It is a sign,' cried Don Quixote, 'thou art but little acquainted with adventures. I tell thee they are giants, and therefore, if thou are afraid, go aside and say thy prayers, for I am resolved to ' combat against them al1'. . Then turning to that side with all the speed which Rozinante could make, he no sooner came into the wood but he saw a mare tied to an oak, and to another a young lad, about fifteen years of age, naked from the waist upwards. This was he who made such a lamentable outcryg and not without cause, for a lusty country-fellow was strapping him soundly with a girdle, at every stripe putting him in mind of a proverb, 'Keep your mouth shut, and your eyes open, sirrahf 'Good master, cried the boy, 'I'll do so no more g as I hope to be saved, I'll never do so again!
