Their helpful suggestions and untiring efforts have been an untailing inspiration. mf K' sf' gi' if ., sei? 2.30 57 1' ilinrmnnril Qlvntennial 1 hitinn Eurelca! exclaimed Archimedes when he had discovered a method of determining the purity ofthe gold in King l'leira's crown. I have found it! Eurelca! exclaimed each lucky forty-niner as he gazed at the precious nugget of gold in his calloused palm. I have found it! When in I85O California was ready for statehood, the motto chosen that best exemplified the spirit of the pioneers was none other than Eureka-ll have found itl, for wealth in its various forms was theirs' for the taking. t This issue of the LEGEND, the Golden Book, interes- tingly shows the opportunities that many students of San Diego Junior College have found for developing their talents and abilities and thus have added to the enrichment of their daily living. For them, too, it has been Eurelca! 1 v ' o I n'n 1-1-0, O-9.l. -.9 Although we cannot predict exactly what the San Diego Junior College will be like ten years trom now, there can be no quess tion that it will have grown long betore that into one ot the most important educa- tional institutions in the entire San Diego area. The justifications tor this loeliet are not ditlicult to tind. For one thing we need only loolc at the record ot the past three years, a record which reveals a growing strength in all three centers in the program ot instruction, in student activities, and in the healthy coordination ot the entire Junior College among its several parts and with the community. And when we realize that the Junior College has grown strong in spite ot many material obstacles-inade- quate housing and poor tacilities, tor in- stance-we cannot help feeling secure in our taith in the future. There are still many questions tor which right answers must loe tound loelore there can be detinite planning: but the proven intelligence, courage, resourcetulness, and initiative ot our taculty and students will be sutticient to meet the challenge. From this point on, San Diego retained a comtortable margin. The halttime score was I9-7. San Diego raclced up two scores in the second halt on plays by Cosimo Cutri and l-larry West. San Die o Junior Colle e, henomznal in victor and undaunted in defeat, . 5 . . 9 . V . climaxed their I949 gridiron season by defeating Menlo Junior College, North- ern California champions, 32 to I4, in the second annual Gold Dust Bowl on the Ioth of December. The Knights, six-point underdogs, performing in cold, rainy weather, com- pletely outclassed the Northerners to prove themselves one of the finest Junior College teams in the West and win for San Diego its first bowl game. A do-or-die pass covering 47 yards in the ebbing seconds of the final quarter gave San Diego Junior College its 27 to 2I victory in the season's opening game with Glendale City College on September 22 at Glendale. Knight quarterback Joe Adamo led the way with a nearly perfect display of aerial mastery by passing for two touchdowns and setting up a third. Gene Edwards and Don Jones were lcey men of the San Diego forwards in a very fierce and well-played game. Jones brought the crowd to their feet in the third quarter by stealing the ball from a Vaqueros halfbaclc and racing 37 yards before being taclcled from behind. Y ' H Y A Coach John Brose sWT,,WA-:I-- .,...v.-.-. ,.,,,,:-, may gli ilfnnthall SPO RTS-CO M PTON A bruising ground attack and too much reserve strength proved the main factors in Compton's 22 to 7 victory over San Diego, on October l, at Los Angeles. The Knights and Tartars, both regarded as high geared offensive units, threw pre- cedents to the winds and played rock- 'em, sock-'em defensive football. Eddie Anderson's speed proved the key to the Compton offense. Doug Gee, Rockne Sholz, Jim and Joe Moulton were outstanding in the Knight forward wall and defensive pattern. El. CAMINO Led by the sparkling running of half- back Cosimo Cutri, San Diego Junior College narrowly missed defeat in a close I3 to 7 win over El Camino City College before some two thousand excited fans on the Warrio-rs' home ground on Octo- ber l5. Fighting, smashing, and tearing, the in- spired El Camino squad lost a golden opportunity to clehorse the Knights by fumbling in the shadow of San Diego's goal line as the final gun sounded. Cutri accounted for bath Knight scores. ln the second quarter, bulling his way through the entire Warrior defense, he crashed into the clear and raced 57 yards to the goal line. ln the final period, two accurate passes by Joe Adamo brought the ball to the EI Camino 7-yard line where Cosimo skirted end to score standing up. CHAFFEY San Diego Junior College, revenge predominate, combined a magnificent ground offense with spontaneous aerial trickery to trounce confident Chaffey Junior College 38 to 26 on October 8, in Balboa Stadium. The Panthers, rated an even chance at game time, were never in the lead as the Knights scored on long sensational runs. Cosimo Cutri turned in a stellar perform- ance by scoring four touchdowns and kicking one conversion. Granville Walton and Jack Walchel played unusually excel- lent ground games. BAKERSFIELD A 39 to I8 victory over Bakersfield Junior College by the San Diego Knights, on the 22nd of October, marked the return of head coach Bill Bailey, who had missed all previous games because of pneumonia. Playing with reserves most of the game, the Knights were never in danger and racked up their third consecutive victory. John Brown, AI l-looper, and Gene Edwards played exceptional defensive games. Brown stood out particularly as line backer by constantly making fierce tackles. SAN BERDOO Scoring at will, San Diego Junior College scalped San Ber- nardino Valley College 38 to l8, on the Indians' stamping grounds on October 29. The Knights' ground ottense completely overrode the fight- ing Indians in a thrilling contest teaturing long spurting runs by several San Diego baclcs. SANTA MONICA In their most decisive victory ot the season, San Diego ran roughshod over Santa Monica City College 48 to 6 on No- vember 9, in Balboa Stadium. Bruising blocks and crushing taclcles shoolc the Knights loose tor long gains and completely halted any Corsair ground ot- tense in a game which decisive- ly upset Santa Monica's expec- tations. EAST LOS ANGELES On ra clear, sparkling night, November I7, in Balboa Sta- dium, San Diego clashed with East Los Angeles City College to decide the Metropolitan Conference Championship. Some 8,000 screaming fans saw the I-Iuslcies come from behind to score two magnificent touch- downs in the dying seconds to beat the Knights, 27 to 20. East LA, who could gain nothing on the ground against San Diego, put on a brilliant display ot aerial plays to upset the Knights. VENTURA I-IOMECOMING GAME Closing their scheduled toot- ball season, the Knights defeat- ed an inspired Ventura Junior College team, 3I to 7, in the annual I-Iomecoming Ga me played in Balboa Stadium on November25. Grabbing on to the tlying shirt tails ot Knight haltbaclc, I-larry West, San Diego smash- ed its way to victory over a fighting and gallant Pirate I I to climax their regular season.
