And three cheers they v deserve. San Diego High's mighty Cavers, under the 9-reat lead ship of Coach Duane Maley and his lellow mentor, Coach Bill Burro brought home the bacon once again, this time in the form ol ' City League Co-Championship with La Jolla High. Our team, which was sparlred by the clever signal calling, ot Te Dale, hard blocking of Jim Schafer and Learnold Stallings, last r ning of Franlc Johnson, Alex Hudson, Ed Duncan, and Jim Cole, e the all-around dependability of Tom Cofield and Harry Bacluer, tor. themselves held to a nothing-nothing tie with Hoover at the ann city-wide carnival battle. lnfuriated by this slow start, they came al to over-run Long Beach Poly 3I to 0, stomp L.A. Then, on an ill-fated night. our Cavemen suffered their only defeat of the season-a 7 to 6 heartbrealrer to a determined La Jolla squad. Down but in no way out: Coach Maley 'allied his team to whip Grossmont 25 to 0. to top Pt. Loma IS to 6. and to crush Kearny 27 to 0. Then came the grand climax of the season with our Hillers emerging victorious over Hoover I3 to 6 and :nding up co-champs with La Jolla, who won the toss to represent the :ity League in the S.C.l.F. play-offs. This year's squad boasts the fine record of scoring more points :han any team in the league and of having fewer points scored against them. . 1 W V r .gfu-QLQ' , ,Q A E I 4 . iff ii!-' . Starting off with a I3 to 6 win over Brown, the Sophs were mo- mentarily set baclc by a l3 to 6 defeat at the hands of Chula Vista J.V., but they came baclr with renewed energy to score wide-margin wins over Helix, La Jolla, and Grossmont: closer victories over Pt. VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Our cross country team, the men with the iron lungs and super en- durance, were led into battle this year by their new coach, Henry Wie- gand, and Captain Martin Phillips. The team, on the whole, showed great im- provement over last year's squad and finished fifth in city league standings by defeating Kearny and Pt. Loma. Cut- standing star was sophomore sensation Don Kynard, who showed promise of doing great things for the long distance squad. If l were seventeen years old and had a time machine which gave me just one choice, where would I like to go? To Athens ot the Golden Age? To Rome during, the rein of Caesar Augustus? To Renaissance Venice? To Paris in the time of Louis XIV? To the England of the First Elizabeth or ot Victoria? No, it l were seventeen years old and had a choice lille that l believe I would stay right here and now, for somehow l feel that the remaining years ot this century, with all their problems and possibilities tor disaster, will bring a richer, fuller. more challenging, and more adventurous lile on this earth than it has ever seen betore. l am certain, too, that every American boy and girl tace greater opportunities than those ot any other generation of youth in the history ol mankind. A perfect record tor the five semesters would be twenty A's, as the average student carries lour subjects each semester. A few honor students are able to carry tive subjects and thus accumulate more than twenty A's during their high school course. .
