He wants something on the senior page besides his picture. Hooray! Yes, that's our boy Charlie over the line for a touchdown, and San Diego walks over Hoover in another great football carnival. There, along with Charlie, are the Sergeanettes and Song and Yell Leaders cheering our team on to victory. Next we find our man right in the middle of more excitement, introducing the new to the old on our annual Homecoming Day. Those silent and talkie movies along with the Charleston were really sensational. What's this? Charlie with a megaphone and a paint brush, painting all the trash cans bright blue and yelling, Let's keep our campus clean! He's trying to do his part in the Boys' Federation clean-up campaign. Charlie settles do-wn a little and decides to do some reading. He picks up a bulletin, expecting it to be rather dull, but instead it says, Save a nickel for a pickle. That's our junior class again with its rhymes that would drive us crazy if homework didn't beat them to it. Next we find Charlie racking his brain about something. As we get nearer we can hear him saying, What chick can l take to Mistletoe Mischief, that great dance put on by the senior class, or Winter Whirl by the junior class, or A Midnight Kiss, the annual Sergeanettes' Ball, or Skunk Hollow Hop, the Boys' Federation brain storm? Shall we leave him with his troubles? Oh, no, not Charlie, too! Almost anywhere we look in the Gray Castle we find a bunch of knit wits racking their brains over a pair of argyle socks instead of you know what. One, two, three, kick! One, two, three, kick! Yes, there he is again sitting right in the fro-nt row watching those gorgeous Cavebelles trying out for Campus Capers, the greatest show West -of the Sierras. Now we find Charlie at the Annual Spring Concert taking in some long-haired stuff for a change. He is pretty well worn out, but our man still has enough of that San Diego High School spirit for the super colossal Senior Skating Party, where the senior boys show off their talents in playing hockey, and that'long-awaited Ditch Day. lOh, my aching sunburnll Then there's Dads and Grads, where the grads and their dads play ball, and Mothers' Tea for the Moms. Next, showing their hidden talents, are the seniors again in that sensational senior play, The Road to Yesterday. Gift Day is another great senior event con- cluded by our Senior Prom with all the color, beauty, and gaiety of a royal ball. Last of all is Commencement and those final grades we've all been waiting for. Everyone, like Charlie, has his own little banner to wave so, San Diego, San Diego, wave your banners highl kr, I , .if D'gn pixi, ll QV A6 kNa!V?K Lxlupklrio rya r eh We X X5 61 f l VV J. C'lu6A Tempted from his lair by the warmth of September, Charlie Cave- man stretched his squat, square body, flexed his biceps, tossed his hair from his eyes, and started, club in hand, on his yearly canvass of the Cave spirit. Charlie's congenial nature was pleased when he learned of the various club activities. He heard that the Mai-Wa sent money to aid the blind children of China, and he looked over the Hi Y's Brother- hood Week display in the front hall. At the Naval Hospital, he found scrapbooks made by the Aquinas Club. Whenever faithful workers were needed at the Hilltop, Charlie saw the hands of the Key Club and CSFers. The unnoticed job of prepar- ing for Senior Career Day was handled by the boys of the Key Club, while guides to help confused sophomores and parents on the first day of school and at Open Houses were furnished by the CSF. Unseen by ambitious Hillers, our man Charlie watched students follow their own hobbies and activities. Hey, Charlie! Watch out for those bullets! warned an R.O.T.C. rifleman. Our team is firing with all the J.C. college and high school teams in the western states to judge the top team in the Sixth Army District. Oops! What happened to Charlie? This excitement must have been too much for him. There he was, though, settling down to watch a peaceful chess tournament between the Grossmont and S.D.H.S. Chess Clubs, the latter winning three to two. Say, where's that speech coming from? Oh, it was just Charlie again: he was trying to join the Debate Club! But they didn't need any help. The Drama Department and Debate Club together brought home the Sweepstakes trophy for the second time from the State College Speech Tournament, missed first place by only one point in the Redlands Tournament, and gave school-wide panels on UNESCO. The Drama Club presented Peg o' My Heart. No, Charlie's help wasn't needed here. Why even the Chemistry Club was planning ahead! Mr. Peterson was helping the kids prepare for tough college chemistry courses and with all the information the CSF has to offer on scholarships and colleges perhaps more Hillers will be continuing their education. Our boy Charlie was an all-around guy! Knowing there are things in this world besides books, he was up there with cheers, songs, and spirit when our mighty faculty nosed out the seniors in a basketball game sponsored by the Key Club. Charlie helped polish that trophy that went to the faculty, then ate a cream puff with the seniors. He saw J.O.'s come out victorious in the Long Beach Optimist Tournament taking the first place consolation prize. With the end of the school year approaching, our little caveman suddenly found himself in the middle of a mad social whirl. He was invited to the picnics given by the Aquinas Club, Pan-American Club, Teen-Age Book Club: and he even sneaked out on CSF Ditch Day. With his Sombrero y Zapatos he watched over the J.O.'s Taco Fiesta. But Charlie's travel lust came to a climax when lnot without his water wingsl he went off with the Chemistry Club for a jaunt around the bay. Yes, this has been an active year for Charlie! He'll need his rest come June: so we'll let our tried little caveman trudge back to his lair, knowing that he'll not soon forget the class of '50, MAI WA-Front row, left to right: Miss Walker, sponsor: June Hom, Loretta Chan, Helen Hom. Opening their l950 season, the Hillers smashed La Jolla, upset the alumni, and set Chula Vista and Point Loma down in rapid succession. ln the ten league frays, the Cavemen finished with a 6-4 record to achieve a second place tie with Pasadena. The league schedule had many exciting games including a one-point win over Muir and an upset loss of 37-35 to an inspired Grossmont crew. Closing the season, San Diego reached the quarter final round in the Beverly Hills tournament, losing to Ventura High, 39-43. All in all, 20 wins, 7 losses is a fine record for a great basketball team. Also Dean Davis was named as guard on the all-SCIF team with both Roy Fields and himself gaining places on the all-Coast team. Y' A V BASKETBALL KVARSITYJ-Front row, left to right: Allen, manager: J. The Cavemen rolled up 43 2X3 points to take first place in the open division. The powerful cavemen are out to keep both the SCIF and the Coast League Championships: with the exception of Grossmont, they expect to have little trouble doing so. ln track events, Coach Bill Patten has a terrific foursome in the I00 and 200-yard dashes, with Dames Johnson, Frank Johnson, Hal Espy, and Paul Brooks all doing slightly over :I0. The Cavemen expect to have some top men in the hurdle class with Dick Simpson, Harold Jackson, Bill and Jim Mclnroe all looking very good. Herb McClister was top man in the 440-yard run. The distance events are on the capable hands of Hubert Smith, Tony Hechanova and Blackie Norsworthy. Field events took an upswing after Charlie Powell, who had been laying basketball, came out. This record is based on the work of the five senior high school semesters. All students whose semester grades of A lsuperiorl number eleven or more are placed on the honor roll. A perfect record for the five semesters would be twenty A's, as the average student carries four subjects each semester. A few honor students are able to carry five subjects and thus accumulate more than twenty A's during their high school course. Note: Students who enter with grades of A from other schools will have their A's accepted for the honor roll provided they make as good grades while in attendance at San Diego High School.
