We'Il probably let him off at Panama like the others, and then he'II need a balloon to get through those jungles. St. Louis, March, I849: Billy Bonney: Jim, Iet's hire out to those gents over there as guides. It's a long hard trip, but they pay good, and we might just find a little gold ourselves. lAnd so, with the aid of the gold-eager '49ers, Los Angeles' Miracle Mile had its humble beginning.j ik Ik HIS San Diego High, I946: Mr, Brose: Golly, Larry, I've never seen a gang of sophomores that come to school in so many different ways. I'm expecting a fellow on a dog sled any minute now. lAnd so, too, did today's '49ers arrive to make their insignificant start towards that far away, golden June, with the aid of he 14cfmihiA tmtivnf In a real sense this Yearbook will be a Memory Book for you. What persons and events will it commemorate? To some of us it may mark the year of the big freeze, or the end of ten years since the beginning of World War ll. To the members of the graduating class l suspect that it will always be memorable for the flowering of friendships and the awakening of new hopes and ambitions. To all of you it is my earnest wish that all memories of this year be pleasant ones, and that they mark the beginnings of ,many years of happiness and success. ,W . , .J s whiff' Mr. Heilbron Miss Munsell Mr. Carr ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS WORK COUNSELORS LIBRARIANS-L. to r.: Swanhom, Lormer, Brose, Jones, Wood. The gdnd reached a new high this year with about forty regular members, a goodly portion of them from the sophomore class. This organization not only played at the football games, but performed on the gridiron with the Sergeanettes, marched in parades, and participated in Homecoming. 7,'e Song and cheer zeddend for this year were the most active crews to issue from the Cave in many calendars, despite head yeller Jimmy's attempted flips and accomplished falls. Uamity ?oot6all , General remarks on the I948 Cave football season ranged from the locker-room ho-hum to the press-box again as San Diego's Varsity pigskin machine made it three straight by taking the thrice-told 'Coast League championship again this season. As usual, the powers that be lMr. Davis 8: Co.l had bags under their eyes, mostly of money, as Coach Duane Maley lnc. drew more packed houses and won more thrilling games. Cave Gridders End Near Perfect Season, a headline plagiarized from the '47 Russ for the '48 sports extra, tells the story better than reams of copy. A lone defeat at the hands of St. Anthony's, 20-I2, in the SCIF playoff first round, marred an otherwise spotless Hilltop season. While downtown papers were playing up crosstown Hoover and their many losses, Maley's moun- tain men rolled over Phoenix, Pasadena, Grossmont, Compton, John Muir, Bakersfield, and the afore- mentioned hapless Redbirds. Powerful Phoenix appeared first and disappeared in a second half splurge which netted the Hillers a 24-I9 victory. This was no doubt the roughest game on the Cave schedule, much to the chagrin of the Castle fans who could listen to only a lousy radio recreation from Arizona. Underdog Grossmont proved a tough yegg, but a hard forged I3-7 score proved sufficient to give San Diego its first loop victory. Out of town Alhambra took advantage of Hill fumbles and came out on the press end of a 0-0 decision. A week later, a slightly tired but peeved Hilltop pigskin crew slapped down lowly Pasadena, 2l-0. Seven days hence highly rated Compton fell I8-6: and then John Muir toppled, 2I-6. Best feature of the season was the perennial Hoover-San. Diego game with the Hillers winning, as usual, 39-7. Individual players shone brightly after the close of the '48 fiscal pigskin year. John Davis, out- standing center, was placed on the Helms SCIF first team. Charlie Davis, plunging full-back and leading scorer with 49 markers, was presented the Brietbard Award- for athlete of the month of November. Six members of the '48 grid machine landed on the third annual all-coast team: End, Gran- ville Walton: tackle, Frank Sanfilippo: guard, Ray Asbury: center, John Davis: and backs, Neale Henderson and Charlie Davis were all included. IA-Sophomore ?oot6aflL CMAJ Country Not to be outdone by their Varsity big brothers, San Diego High's .l.V. and Sophomore pigsliin machines also cleaned up on all city competition. The JayVers, under command of Bill Patten, proved too tough for nearly all opponents, losing only to a rough Chula Vista combination. Hampered by the loss of winger Bob Guerro, the Cavers still played. a brand of ball second to none. Ronnie Lauer, end, gave hope to next season's Varsity with his sterling play. All around the Pattenmen turned in a bang-up performance. A list of their victims included Hoover, St. Augustine, and Grossmont. First year spangles of a newly organized sophomore football team also shone brightly, with but one win recorded in favor of the opposition. First game jitters gave Army-Navy Academy a sloppy decision, but after that Mentor Tom Jones and boys rolled over everything. Hoover Bees, Mountain Empire, Kearny Frosh, and Grossmont were among their victims. Cap- tain, and field general, Louis Ferrari, turned in a creditable performance with his brilliant ball handling. One sport has prevailed since the ancient Greek marathons-namely, cross-country, which, al- though hedging on a two-mile rather than one-hundred-mile run, still requires plenty of extra wind and worli. Coach Bill Patten, busy man in the Cave sports department, guided his twenty-odd runners to numerous honors during the '48 season. Laurels in the city, Coast League, and SCIF championships were awarded Hill harriers. Diclc Swanson stood out especially, being placed on the six-man, all-city, cross-country team and generally acclaimed second only to Compton's Jerome Walters in the Coast loop. Tony Hechanova, Blackie Northsworthy, and Jaclc Sardo all helped to pace the Hillers to victory on numerous occasions. Kawlze Mall - 5 f wa 'v,,. f1 sos MCCLURQ, Ace HILL FORWARD Uamity Krwleetball Fifteen wins, ten losses is a fitting summary for a great Cave basketball season forged by Coach Merrill Douglas and his 'Five boys in blue. Lack of that right amount of drive netted San Diego a tie for first place in the Coast League, but a chance at sole possession of the CPL title went down the drain when they bowed 3I-29 in their final game with Compton. Nevertheless, final tilt or not, the Cavemen broke all precedents by grabbing a tie for the championship, as little can be said of Castle basketball machines in recent years. The perennial alumni game inaugurated the regular '48-'49 season, with a brilliant graduate crew beating San Diego in their first appearance, 45-43. La Jolla beaten, the Hillers entered the Kiwanis tourney but dropped their first round game to Long Beach Wilson, 42-40. Another heart breaker? lt could have been, but Douglas lnc. raced through consolation bracket competition and grabbed those laurels. Bob McClurg, forward, and Ed Simpson, guard, were named on the all-tourney team. Tournaments were fast and furious as Compton lured the Hillers away for a week of basketball and nothing but setbacks. They lost to both Mount Carmel and St. Anthony's and came home with their eyes on the Coast League and visions of grandeur. Such was the case, almost, as the Cavers warped Pasadena and Muir, but lost to Grossmont 4I-40 on a last-minute free-throw. Still not submissive, however, was Hoover, who played brilliantly but lost 39-29 to 'further the San Diegan cause. Compton and Muir were pushed aside, but two non-league encounters with St. Augustine and Point Loma were dropped by an over-confident Cave cage crew. Undaunted, the Cavemen lashed out at Hoover for the second time, winning, 42-29, then going on to slaughter Grossmont and Pasadena. A loss to Compton, however, literally squelched Cave hopes of anything but a tie for first place, which they got. Besides turning in an excellent performance as a team, all personnel of first string caliber re- ceived some mention for their work. Simpson and McClurg were rated berths on the all-Coast team, with center, Lee Brown, making the second combine. .loe Cutri and Lloyd Bellair both received honorable mention. Bud Muehleisen, Charlie Davis, and Granville Walton made heep big noise also with their fine reserve work. , R .M NA, , XMfi'f?:f??f - , . z ' M, M, 11. rw N Pl L . 1, , f,w1 1iI,:1, w R wwf 'gm' 'i d -F - - Q ' - -.-n-Jew. v ' 1,,.-' f 54 . ul 551 .21 K ' 'gilx Nxvdrg , gg kfwgiwNwQ , , 'if ,. .,,fy ,f Avi ,S r , , Q V--www ww Ni W , W, wwwd igikwgmp. .H WHEEW-Hwdw. 56 , 1 , muumxt r,Y7 , :-x 'N' ,V s,,w, ww- 41, wmivx., ..'. Led by captain Dave Kikuchi, l28 pound wonder, Coach Frank Crosby's boys grabbed second place in, the SCIF finals behind powerful El Centro, and ended a generally bang-up season. Crosby plus -four other city high school coaches worked long into many nights and formed the first metro wrestling league in the city's history. Kearny, Hoover, Coronado, Vocational and San Diego were all members. Little was expected for the first year, but contrary to those predictions, the new loop turned into a big success with most of the meets tougher'n nails, most of 'em that is. Crosstown Hoover was mangled by the invading Hillers, 49-3, with a loss in the heavyweights, the latter's only downfall. The more than adequate San Diegans wound up with the league title as expected and Kikuchi was awarded the Paul Walker trophy for the best wrestler of the year. He was SPAAU, Far Western, city and SCIF champ, winning I9 out of 20 matches. Don Allen ancl Ray Asbury were the other victors in the SCIF finals. Mike Burnett, John Alegria, Pete Rodriquez, Cy Morgan, Walt Haase and Dick Delgado all received Varsity letters for placing in the SCIF 'finals also. Other meets besides city-wide fests included a loss to El Centro by the Hiller A crew and a l,ke decision to Calexico by the B team. The vaunted Hillers took third spot in, the NTC, won numerous awards in the beginners and novice tourneys. K pr, J ,, .k ,M Swimming, go! , 7enniA Golf and tennis, oft spoken of as the least appreciated ot all Cave sports, made big noises for themselves as their '49 seasons progressed. Tennismen and Coach Tom Jones, working under a new 'Formula of more work and less play, had won every match up to presstime. Two practice wins over Hoover were included in this sensational drive. Richard Doss and Tom Fago paced the squad in these matches: but lnk Tourney stars Bud Muehleisen, Faustino Manzano, Herb Solomon, and Frank Lauricio, although on top of the chal- lenge board, had yet to play in an inter-squad tussles. A big Coast season was looked forward to leight gamesl, and the annual Ink' Tournament in April was also in view. Golfdom may or may not have heard of San Diego High, but Coach Bill Burrows 81 Co. are determined to place the Hilltop in the big-name golf schools some day. A good start was made this year with hapless Hoover falling victim to Cave might in a practice meet. Soph Bill McDade was low man. Shaping up well and viewed with increasing happiness by Burrows were John Foley, high man on the challenge board, Jack Rosenberg, McDade, Bob Townsend, and Bob Smith. All were rated high, not only at San Diego, but also in the county and on the coast. Something few Hill fans have ever witnessed is a swimming meet, but apparently there shoulcl have been crowds because Hilltop swimmers were giving the fish a good show with their numerous winnings. Victories against Hoover and Coronado plus a third place in the rugged Whittier relays high- lighted the '49 year. Captain Larry Rowen and Fritz Kunzell paced the talented Castle aquamen. Jim Cotton, Fred Thompson, Ronald Lykins, and Woody Naylor lent their support. Kunzell not only sparkled on the team, but also won honors both in the San Diego Club and in various other rough water swims. finale Everything moves fast nowadays-airplanes, ships, trains, and even one Hilltop organization, the Varsity Baseball Team, which was rapidly approaching some super-sonic level cn May Day, having completely routed all Coast League competition by an average ot I5 runs per game. Tilts remained with no one save SCIF finals entrants. The momentous Morrowmen also grabbed the perennial Po- mona 20-30 tournament, bIast'ng bootituI Point Loma High I9-3 in the tinals. Only losses of the season were three to rugged Tucson by scores ot 2-I, I5-I I, and 7-4. The last two decisions were hectic, to say the least, with the Wildcats victorious in the end over Hiller ace hurlers, Ray McCoy and Jack Smith. Ag,ain the highlights ot the tast-waning season were two triumphs over a tighting Hoover crew. Scores looked something like I3-I and 22-4. A like story was predominant in track with Coach Bill Patten's Class A squad literally running away with all types of Iaurels. The Cavemen won the Coast League dual meet championship in easy 'Fashion with only a close victory over Grossmont lone and one-third points to be speciticl ruining San Diego's heavy marginal record. Led by Charlie Davis and Hal Espy, sprinters, the Castlers also copped the Huntington Beach Southern Counties Meet, and the Compton Gold Cup test. The 880 relay team hacl yet to lose a test up to May I. I y ED SIMPSON, ANOTHER HIT ,A MW, wwmmwa..,.,5m,samw...,ws .,m..,.,, N swemsfmmamsarmvww 'V rm:T'H 'NH BASEBALL TEAM--Flrst row: Ross tMur.J. Uamity Kaweball Team Baseball, a sport that proves a winning investment any time under the tutelage of Mentor Dewey MQke Morrow was, as usual, looking fine at press-time. Rated to take the Coast League championship, the second successive time, the Cavemen, led by flyhawk Ed Simpson, pasted hapless La Jolla, I2-2, in, the stadium. Everybody had fun. Rugged Tucson, yearly Arizona State champs, drove to San Diego and a two-game series, next. First game score, Hillers, 9-6, and winner, Jack Smith, despite five errors. Second tilt total, Tucson, 2-I, and a heartbreaker. Ray McCoy, toiling brilliantly, yielded a triple in the top of the eighth, and an outfield fly broke the I-I deadlock and also numerous Cave hearts. Little teams have a mania for playing big powers: and, needless to say, outlying Chula Vista is no exception. The Spartans trekked to the stadium and a 7-I loss at the unmerciful hands of the Cavemen. Although sentiments of Hill baseball fans were still rather cool, their leaning improved tremen- dously over last year. Tom Martinez, three-year vet at second base, was leading Cave batters, with Simpson close on his heels. Morrow was experiment ng with unusual combinations to fill up sagging spots. John Hartsell was handling most of the catching chores, Bob Jordan was at first: Martinez, at second: Simpson or Al Kennerly, at third: Neale Henderson, at shortstop: and Frank Sanfilippo, Curtis Everett, Hal Brunson, Bud Muehleisen and Charle Powell -were in the outer gardens. Vern Couts, Jack Smith, Jack Lutz, and Ray McCoy all were showing up well on the mound. Track Hal Espy Kal' Annuals, like everything else, have deadlines: and hence this writer, hampered by conditions not in his control, is forced to run down a brief season summary and then just look at the rest of the year with hope. initiating the good-looking '49 track season was the San Diego relays, where the Hillers took second- place in all three classes, just behind bitter rival and CPL partner Grossmont. Highlighting the individual events in that fest was Hal Espy's :I0. IOO-yard dash. Point Loma was felled by Cave power, and La Jolla likewise succumbed. The year, so far, looked like a replica of last season, when San Diego took an SCIF cham- pionship. In track events, Hal Espy and Charlie Davis shone in the I00 and 220-yard dashes. Both in excellent condition, they were already gaining much notice. Weak in the 440 to some extent, Coach Bill Patten looked forward to his 880, I320, and mile races as a source of much winning. Henry Cagle and Jack Sardo in the half mile, Tony Hechanova and Blackie Norsworthy in the I320, and Dick Swanson in the mile, stood out. Slightly under par in the hurdles, Patten still had hopes in Dave McCoy, B stickman, who was regularly beating Class A hurdlers with little trouble. Field events took an upswing after the San Diego Relays, especially with John Davis, shining in his phase, the shot-put. lan Taylor and Cornie Calma both did six feet or threreabouts in the high- jump with more expected. Freddie Davis, pint-sized sprinter, looked at his best in the broad-jump with leaps of 21 feet already on the score sheet. A terrific trio was being moulded in the pole-vault with AI Rodin, John Reber, and Joe Cutri all All in all, the Hilltop tracksters were advancing on one of their best seasons, maybe. clearing II feet. . x, M Vvgk, 1. This record is based on the work offthe five senior high school semesters. All pupils whose semester grades of A lsuperiorj number eleven or more are placed on the honor roll. A perfect record for the five semesters would be twenty A's, as the average pupil is enrolled in four subjects each semester. A few honor pupils are able to carry five subjects and thus accumulate more than twenty A's during their high school courses. Note: Pupils who enter with grades of A from other schools will have their A's accepted for the honor roll providing they make as good grades while in attendance at San Diego High School. Daryl L.
