K events became more dignified. Dignity was rampant at the dances given at the middle of the year. Everyone seemed to have the complex that LIFE was going to come in any minute to talre pictures. They all stood around, looting at decorations that had talren the better part of a hundred forged passes to malre. ln the spring the students displayed fine school spirit by joining every club they could. We know, because, coincidentally. we were taking club pictures for the annual at the time. The same amazing loyalty was demonstrated for Carmelita. 'No one could rest. or even study. unless he was out mating sure that Mr. Marcelli didn't need his help. At last the end of the year came: and once again the students expressed their feel- ing in their activities, as they showed their profound sorrow at leaving school by fre- wsvff mf -'Mrs 9ff7F.'ilsf!fSlI,d2.Yi- a a . 1 AN

Ah, sport! Clean living, vigorous competition just for the fun of it, no sordid monetary cares-that's how it wasn't at San Diego High School. Spo-rt there meant a huge project where the ASB made lots of money, the players made lots of letters, and the spectators made lots of gliders. The ASB thought it was smart when it persuaded players to work only for letters. And it was: for the resemblance between the dollar sign and the lettermen's S was no coin- cidence, since profits from games financed the rest of the ASB activi- ties. Still, there were certain amatory wages earned by lettermen's sweat- ers that no amount of money could have bought. The ASB then had to convince the spectators, who were the rest of the students, that they would profit by seeing a game. These spectators were really rooters at the games, meaning they had to dig deep every time they got a ticket. Naturally, such a large project as sport needed advertising. This was the reason for The Russ's existence. Why else should the ASB continue to support it? The Russ was sparked lor plugged, anywayj in this endeavor by Gary Allen, who boasted that he never used the same word twice, which in many caseslwas a blessing. He achieved the highest altitude in his descriptive flights when he used Hill Hog Hide Haulers to describe these padded pill pushers. jWe can do it, toolj The admiration of the school for its bread winners didn't stop at al- literation. Since the athletes had made the school's funds, the stu- dents saw no reason why they shouldn't handle them, too, and so elected the players as officers. Basketball Pictures -Courtesy of S.D.
