One of the most stirring things about school life was the way. the students learned democracy through their own student government. It was just lilre a democracy, too, with a full third of those eligible to vote voting the same people into office year a ter year. The dominant group in the government was Mr. Ken- nedy's I60 study hall, which for let- terhead puiooses was divided into two parts: L .incil and Assembly Most of the Council obtained their positions in school-wide, lunch- period-long elections, of which the first omen was the passing around of petitions. The students always care- fully checlred a candidate's scholas- tic record and his qualifications for office before signing a petition. Their conscientiousness in this matter was clearly shown by The Russ last year when it circulated, and had fully signed, a petition nominating Genghis Khan for garbage collector. Climaxing weelrs during which many heretofore concealed friend- ships between voters and candidates were revealed, was the election as- sembly. Here, candidates proclaim- ed their virtue and morals, or laclr of same. Students listened, agreed, ap- plauded and voted for their friends. Its members having been duly elected, the Council proceeded about its business, which was mostly tabling measures and resolutions. When the pile of resolutions had crowded the feet of members off the table, the council would send a few bills to its not necessarily better half, the Assembly, whose members came from those veritable hot-beds of democracy, the homerooms. Thus the students and their elect- ed government marched inconse- quentially through the year, not really changing the world at all.

At the beginning of the year stu- dents were flushed with a feverish joy be- cause they were beck at school at last. At lootball games they expressed their patriotic fervor in such statements as: Get that babe in the third fowl , Who's got my shoe? , Pardon me. pardon, oopsl Excuse me, OUCHl and SQUlRRRTl Football games, as the first activities, also held a special honor as official starter of the school yearl For school is actually in session only when there are activities to lreep students out of it. Vlhen enough money had been made from football games to finance activities the rest of the year and the students' earlier fever of joy had become a coma of despair, CFM
