Who are we to discuss them, with their mysteries, their in- trigues, and their reasonless ways? They began deceiving the world with their outward appearances. They used so much padding in their blouses that a chip on a girl's shoulder became a veritable log. Some, objecting to our statement that girls use their clothing to de- ceive, may point to their begins- and-ends-here bathing suits. We concede the point, but have you seen the junlr a girl talres to the beach with her? She might as well be wearing an alpaca coat for all you can see of her. Intrigue surrounded girls' relations with boys. A tremendous amount was necessary to learn the 'First thing, Did he have a car? Since our story would end here if he didn't, let's assume that he did. Now, Could he support her in the way she was accustomed? This man- ner was not necessarily that which she was used to, but the way she would have lilred her previous beau to support her and he is probably her previous beau because he didn't. These hurdles past, we come to the last step, which required the most triclrery of all, since it was the most important, 'Did he have a ring? Just as no trophy hunter would hunt a lion that didn't have a head, neither would any girl go after a boy who didn't have a ring that she could flash at her competitors. The strangest side of a girl lun- anatomically spealring, of coursel was her club-forming instinct. La- beled with unsavory alphabetical combinations, her clubs worlred con- stantly to increase the air of mystery surrounding girls. Weren't they awful? Well, spealc- ing for ourselves, we love a mystery. CJ rx J yay fr -rare in OW , I gf mo R We wish we could give the boys the same soul-quictening start we gave the girls: but, as we said, girls have a monopoly on being thought strange creatures. This, unfortun- ately, is not the only inequality. Boys can scream: they can whistle and stomp, too: but when screaming is heard on the radio, people say, Oh, those silly girls! Why aren't boys called silly? Cartoons are drawn on the vices of girls who wear bobby- sox. Boys wear bobby-sox, but nobody has exposed their vices since Mart Twain. Boys, in one ofthe few instances of equal- ity, could form clubs the same as girls. But their noble instincts were stunted here, too: for no great-hearted merchant sponsored their clubs. As a result, the only radio pro- grams vrhich featured the boys' clubs were those broadcast to patrol cars. The boys' clubs would soon have fallen apart, had it not been for joint meetings with girls' clubs. As a rule, the only thing joint about one of a esyf r kfiwixa- s, LIU. , .ZW V T U 7 Jvc ggi? i , W5 me Ze 1+ .J anew ev eo 'N these meetings was the place where it was held. Another chance the boys had at equality was that they too could set up require- ments for prospective girl friends. A girl in . - r ip L2 sy' X., yi is iiflyspm B i cg '17 Si CCJU. U question simply had to be faultless. The frequent mention of girls might lead the reader to believe that boys .spent all their time thinlring about girls. To the con- trary, they studied constantly. ln chemistry, for instance, they learned that some things are insoluble. meaning they won't melt. They 'had this proved abundantly to their own dissatisfaction after school hours. There's nothing like a practical education. including our school system. SN UPN .3, VICE F N-L PRESIDENT FALL R W 5 -:P vi' yy V One of the most stirring things about school life was the way. the students learned democracy through their own student government. It was just lilre a democracy, too, with a full third of those eligible to vote voting the same people into office year a ter year. The dominant group in the government was Mr. Ken- nedy's I60 study hall, which for let- terhead puiooses was divided into two parts: L .incil and Assembly Most of the Council obtained their positions in school-wide, lunch- period-long elections, of which the first omen was the passing around of petitions. The students always care- fully checlred a candidate's scholas- tic record and his qualifications for office before signing a petition. Their conscientiousness in this matter was clearly shown by The Russ last year when it circulated, and had fully signed, a petition nominating Genghis Khan for garbage collector. Climaxing weelrs during which many heretofore concealed friend- ships between voters and candidates were revealed, was the election as- sembly. Here, candidates proclaim- ed their virtue and morals, or laclr of same. Students listened, agreed, ap- plauded and voted for their friends. Its members having been duly elected, the Council proceeded about its business, which was mostly tabling measures and resolutions. When the pile of resolutions had crowded the feet of members off the table, the council would send a few bills to its not necessarily better half, the Assembly, whose members came from those veritable hot-beds of democracy, the homerooms. Thus the students and their elect- ed government marched inconse- quentially through the year, not really changing the world at all. Nix! At the beginning of the year stu- dents were flushed with a feverish joy be- cause they were beck at school at last. At lootball games they expressed their patriotic fervor in such statements as: Get that babe in the third fowl , Who's got my shoe? , Pardon me. pardon, oopsl Excuse me, OUCHl and SQUlRRRTl Football games, as the first activities, also held a special honor as official starter of the school yearl For school is actually in session only when there are activities to lreep students out of it. Vlhen enough money had been made from football games to finance activities the rest of the year and the students' earlier fever of joy had become a coma of despair, CFM Ca. They all stood around, looting at decorations that had talren the better part of a hundred forged passes to malre. ln the spring the students displayed fine school spirit by joining every club they could. We know, because, coincidentally. we were taking club pictures for the annual at the time. The same amazing loyalty was demonstrated for Carmelita. 'No one could rest. or even study. unless he was out mating sure that Mr. Marcelli didn't need his help. At last the end of the year came: and once again the students expressed their feel- ing in their activities, as they showed their profound sorrow at leaving school by fre- wsvff mf -'Mrs 9ff7F.'ilsf!fSlI,d2.Yi- a a . 1 AN K mf A, Li ,Q If N ' ' ' .Aff W ' , ' X 'Z A 4 Q x - f 'q' V, '54 2 BX J ig ' j 19 A I .35 Q , .rfkf Ah, sport! Clean living, vigorous competition just for the fun of it, no sordid monetary cares-that's how it wasn't at San Diego High School. Spo-rt there meant a huge project where the ASB made lots of money, the players made lots of letters, and the spectators made lots of gliders. The ASB thought it was smart when it persuaded players to work only for letters. And it was: for the resemblance between the dollar sign and the lettermen's S was no coin- cidence, since profits from games financed the rest of the ASB activi- ties. Still, there were certain amatory wages earned by lettermen's sweat- ers that no amount of money could have bought. The ASB then had to convince the spectators, who were the rest of the students, that they would profit by seeing a game. These spectators were really rooters at the games, meaning they had to dig deep every time they got a ticket. Naturally, such a large project as sport needed advertising. This was the reason for The Russ's existence. Why else should the ASB continue to support it? The Russ was sparked lor plugged, anywayj in this endeavor by Gary Allen, who boasted that he never used the same word twice, which in many caseslwas a blessing. He achieved the highest altitude in his descriptive flights when he used Hill Hog Hide Haulers to describe these padded pill pushers. jWe can do it, toolj The admiration of the school for its bread winners didn't stop at al- literation. Since the athletes had made the school's funds, the stu- dents saw no reason why they shouldn't handle them, too, and so elected the players as officers. Basketball Pictures -Courtesy of S.D. Underclass- men, according to Seniors, were Juniors, Sophomores or anyone else they were about to be nasty to. Underclassmen, according to Juniors, were Sophomoresq and that single word was enough to express their contempt. Sophomores were too busy lording it over their former Junior High buddies to worry much about just who were underclassmen. The wide variation in definitions, however, didn't prevent the word Underclassmen from being used. In the mouths of all students of all grades, it meant a large group of not-too-bright students. The great- est fear of a political candidate was that word would be passed around that the Underclassmen were going to vote for him. The attitude of those veterans who had been here as long as two years towards the annual influx of little people was, Loot, they're coming in through the screens! But the newcomers had an attitude, too. They saw in themselves the bright new hope of the Hilltop. They be- gan plotting to take over the govern- ment when, fortunately, they became Juniors. Now they had spent a year here: and, since they had been here, that year must have been per- fect. Therefore, the changes they had wanted to malie as Sophomores must have been unnecessary. They were further speeded in relinquish- ing their old revolutionary ideas, when the new crop of Sophomores made the same amazing discoveries they had. When they became Seniors, the last trace of any energy, selflessness or freshness left them. They were true Seniors. J -fx, . -,- -c-, 5 T Now it has come time for us to write a pageful of craclns that will be fully appre- ciated by only a couple of dozen people with gripes on their lips and circles under their eyes-the Annual staff. First, perhaps, we should describe the genius behind this volume-Miss Constance Bowman. Miss Bowman, last September, was a tall, beautiful brunette with a John Milton haircut beneath which nestled a pair of vamp glasses. Miss Bowman now-well. y l jf 't 4 X .-3.-.g-. W-U36 Q.. . When she appointed us as editors last June, we immediately filled all the positions on the Annual with our friends. By Septem- ber, however, we had forgotten our pre- vious patronage spree: and we appointed another crew of friends to the same posts. As a result, we have a matched set of Annual staffs. In October, people began aslcing what the Annual's theme was. ln February, about two months before the deadline, we began Y l A 4 'Z fb .,.. N it .A Z H to show some slight curiosity, too. Miss Bowman called an all-night meeting. Here, we chatted pleasantly while Miss Bowman sweated out a theme. During March, we sauntered around tal:- ing a few pictures lwith some slight assist- ance from Charlie Watermanl. We didn't write anything, but we lrept waiting for peo- ple to ast, How's the Annual going? so that we could caclrle, To the dogsl . and flap away. Miss Bowman lrept giving us 5.2 ik deadlines, but we refused to be fooled by such a sweatshop device. Finally, about March l5, we began sitting up until two in the morning. We didn't ever do anything: but the way we felt gave us that comfort- able martyr complex, After all, our methods weren't slipshodg they were just no good. And only two weelrs after the final and absolute deadline, we got enough copy down to the printers. The Cardinal will never miss it, anyway. 1 14 mini tration Here begins the only thing that can get the Annual back in your good graces-your pictures. Incidently, more pictures were taken for the Annual this year than have been taken any previous year. First, however, we must pay off some political patronage by printing pictures of the faculty and the student body officers. lf you can't stand those, read the activity calendar we put in this section so that you wouldn't miss our hot prose. Playing in fog so dense that the spectators couldn't see past the sideline stripes, Al Pollard of Loyola twice broke away for runs of 70 and 80 yards to provide the margin of victory for his team. The Hillers had command in the first quarter: but Loyola went to the front in the second quarter for an advantage they never relinquished. A week before Christmas vacation, the student body received an opportunity to hear its Choir's fine artistry at a special assem- bly. The choir, appearing in its new blue robes against the back- ground of a huge Yuletide wreath, was introduced by members of Mrs. Weis's sophomore class, who had prepared a special script for the occasion. All or parts of the Choir had engagements for every day in December up to Christmas, singing at the YWCA, the Women's Club and a special performance Christmas Eve at the Hotel Del Coronado. The group also represented the Hilltop in the City Schools Christmas Pageant, presented before packed audiences the three nights before Christmas vacation, in the Russ Auditorium. Any effort to put meaning into the name was lost in the scramble to get twoiwords beginning with the same letter. They probably would have called it Leopard Leap had they not been afraid ot a spotty showing. In March we tully expected two dances entitled Lion's Claw and Lamb Chop. Crammers' Crawl was a tumabout dance. The attendance ati such a dance is always interesting because it reveals girls' secret passions. Ringleaders ot the attair were Jane Hussey and .lim Marinos. When the Sergeanettes have a blowout, it never goes tlat. Such was the case with their annual ball, Winter Wonderland. The Sergeanettes took no chances, making the dating both turnabout and the usual run-around. Although condemned at the start by its name, the ball came through with the best attendance not any dance during the year. Elections were held for King and Queen, better known as John Holloway and Shirley Rogers. Jeannie Robinson was announced as the new colonel: and Lavene Myers, the new major. Long after midnight, couples were still trying to bribe their coats back from the overcrowded check ro-om. Some simply left without them, only to find that it was still winter, but certainly no wonderland, outside. lespie. Last year when Coach Morrow returned from the Navy, he had only a few weeks to shape up the team that eventually became a Southern California champion. Before it could get rolling, how- ever, it lost a game to Tucson. This year the Desert Diamond boys rode into town heavy favorites: but they left after a triple whip- ping, looking like the riders with the purple rage. The next week San Diego engaged Muir. With Pete Corona allowing the opposi- tion only three hits, the Hill Horsehide Heavers triumphed, II-O. The day after that they cleaned up on the -other Northerner, Pasa- dena High. Thus, as the Annual goes to press, we predict another championship team, if only for the reason that Coach Mo-rrow's old championship sweater is wearing out. He needs a new one. glacier glider-A Sponsor: Mr. Kittredge. Fall officers: Marian White, presi- dent: Lou West, vice president: Karlene Baker, secretary-treasurer. Carmelita was no horse opera: but it had all the props for one: a beautiful feminine star, Joan Sieger: an equally handsome male lead, John Holloway: and a whole crew of villains frenziedly referred to as Na-VA-ics! When it was all over, the school relinquished its role of impressario, but not the glory gained by having had enough courage and talent to present the operetta. Not only did the Seniors have outings at the end of the year, but they had certain ceremonies, too. Seniors received a message of 'faith when Vespers were held at the First Baptist Church. Florence Durson arranged the program, which was attended by Seni-ors of all faiths. Hardly on the same level, but a ceremony nevertheless, was the Gift Day Assembly on June l8. Under the guidance of Don Lyons, Gift Day stalked with 'Full majesty through the usual co-rny routines, old jokes and certain contests of dark implications. A ceremony is an event where everyone stands rooted to the spot while a few people saw away on something. Such was the Prom. The boys, straight-jaclceted in their new tuxes, and the girls, made cautious by gravity flow formals, stood frozen as the band played on. Uar-Arty 'gn Sponsor: Coach Crosby. When basketball season came to the Hilltop this year, it was looked upon as only a lull between football and baseball. The chances did not look good. Coach Merrill Douglas had only recently returned 'From the service, there were 'Few returning lettermen, San Diego had been sadly beaten the previous season, and the first game was dropped to the Alumni. Once the bets had been made and the un- favorable odds had been established, however, the team began to improve. It took third place in the Compton tourney and then the consola- tion prize at Chino. The winning streak was interrupted when Hoover took the second ot the Crosstown series games. They also won the third. S.D.H.S. put on a final burst of glory, how- ever, and ended the season with an unexpected clean-up at Beverly Hills, making a season record ot 25 wins and 5 losses. Unquestionably, the outstanding player ot the year was Ben Cendali, a three-year letterman and top scorer who made 37 points in one game. The season's scores were Alumni, 23-25: Compton Tourney, third place: Point Loma 38-27: State B's, 20-3I: Chino Tourney, con- solation: Grossmont, 28-20: Compton, 25-26' Pasadena, 45-32: Muir, 36-I9: Hoover, 3l-28: Compton, 27-I9: Saint Augustine, 33-22: Point Loma, 27-25: Muir, 42-29: Compton. 29-25: Hoover, 26-34: Saint Augustine, 42-23: Pasa- dena, 59-26: Grossmont, 35-I9: Muir, 62-22: Hoover, 32-43: Beverly Hills Tourney, cham- pionship: and Coast League, second place. The Cave Bees, second only to Compton came through with a stack of smashing victories, too. They were coached by the Hilltop's newest mentor, Duane Maley. The season's scores were Alumni, 30-26: Brown Military, 65-I8: Point Loma, 40-32, 35- 23, 4I-I4: Grossmont, 29-2I: Compton, 25-33 I6-30, 30-34: Pasadena, 37-23, 4l-20: La Jolla 29-30: Muir, 47-2I, 33-22: Hoover, 37-29, 28- 22, 39-28: Saint Augustine, 48-20: Coast League, second place. , . .5-.ak r 2 .si R, 3. 5 ,Q Q , r rs K. ii -. ,,,sr5sf if L..-17' 0 ' Lf ei 'Li 0 I1 Cf IISCO, 653 J h V d B lu Ben Cendali, Tennis Frank Morey, Golf R r F ! . f f y . . This year's track team, tho-ugh good, failed to equal previous records. The early season meets, however, were but a prelude to the prep classic, the Coast League track meet, in which the Hill spikespinners managed to take third. Bob Smith, named All-American scholastic pole vaulter by Look Magazine, was the out- standing member of the team. The '47 baseball seas-on was marked by two things: an excellent team and rotten luck. Coach Morrow is tops: the team had many seasoned veterans: and this combination won most of the games. Only bad luck, therefore, can ex- plain why the team failed in a few contests. The first defeat came from Hoover. With a second defeat at the hands of H-oover, the Hilltop lost any chance at the Coast League Champio-ship: but it finished third in the League by passing Pasadena and Compton. John Holloway Some Seniors worked up to distinction: others suddenly burst into it: but John Holloway had simply been there longer than anyone could remember. So great was his reputation when he arrived at SDHS that he was appointed to one ot the nastiest positions in school- the Sophomore presidency. Nor was the Russ sports page allowed to forget his name: for he went out tor three sports. ln his Junior year, there again was Holloway in football, basketball and track. His admitted ability also had won him another fitting award-a tough, undesir- able job-Student Judge. Then John got another job entailing work, time and little thanks, the Senior A Presidency. At the same time, he was starring in track and giving a splendid performance as lead lmalel in Carmelita. And let us confirm your suspicion of our admiration for him by reporting that he made straight A's for three years. We sure teel sorry tor the guy. He never learned to sit back and let somebody else do the work, like the rest of us. sc., Tl-NI Quinn Lan Neal L. Bunclschuh Doris Burcutt-GL Representative, Pasa- dena Junior College, Art. Nan was one of that poor, deluded group who came to high school determined to have the adjec- tive active applied to them. Think of the careful plotting she did and over-whelming joy she had when, as a sophomore, she won that coveted post, Girls' League Library Chairman. Don't underestimate that job: for what she learned in getting it, she applied successfully to winning the Girls' League vice presidency. But, like every politician, Nan made a mistake. She got on the Junior cabinet, in charge ot the Cave-lnn for Junior Week. Anyone connected with that project was left in the shadows long atter its passing: and Nan lost the Girls' League presidency in the June elections. She didn't get back in the running, until she appeared as Home- coming Chairman. Atter a masterful job on that activity, she swept on to win the Girls' League's top post. We'll never underestimate a librarian again. 97 ' i if f uf' QTY? l i i ' 1 S ic 1 lf' si.- Q' 's Jane Dearing-Choir, Thespians, Drama Club Vice President, Girl Reserves, Pep Squad, San Diego State College. Fernando Gomez Jr.-Navy, Mechanic. jim lllarinm Usually our star athletes don't have a flair for government, though they may be elected to office on their popularity and sports record. A lucky exception to this rule was Jim Marinos. Even as a sophomore he was on the J.V. football and basketball teams. As a Junior, he returned to his football and added J.V. baseball. Already politics were beginning to edge him out of his chosen field, for he was elected vice president of the Little S Club. The final wedge was driven that June when he became Boys' Fed. prexy. As a senior B, Jim was still in sports, but only by the seat of his pants. He lost the first string quarterback spot to Jerry Dahms and kept Coach Douglas company on the bench most of the basketball season. ln January, he ran for ASB president against four candidates and racked up a tremendous majority. As the ASB Calendar filled up with more and more activities, he showed that the voters' trust had not been misplaced. 3 Tillie Gonzalez-Beauty College, Cosme- tology. Without his glasses he can't see across the room: he has trouble with a bum knee: and he never shoots off his mouth or his letterman's sweater. Yet Ben was one ot the greatest basket- ball and tennis players that San Diego has ever seen. A three year basketball letter- man, Ben deserves such honors as: high point man for three consecutive years, co- captain last year and captain this year, member ot the Victory League team two years. the Coast Prep League team and the Beverly Hills all-tournament team this year. With a great athletic record behind him, Ben felt that he was qualified to be ASB president. The student body thought so too and elected him. He tried tor the Senior A presidency this semester but lost. Defeat lett him tree to wind up the year playing tennis and cluttering up the trophy case. Shirley Regent Most ot the people in the Hot Shot Parade have worlced and schemed since they were Sophomores to achieve their present exalted positions. Not Shirley Rogers! She just leaped out from behind the Xylophone that had hidden her in the band, and there she was. Her tirst upward jump was to band major, where tor a semester she let tight slacks do the work ot sequins. At the election assembly in January, she chuckecl, with machine-like precision, a dozen well- plotted naive craclcs that, while being be- neath the standards of some of the listeners, were definitely not over their heads. As a result, she was elected ASB vice prexy by a powerful majority. Her new-found popularity didn't end there, however, tor at the ASB Ball she was elected queen. To malce sure her blood was completely blue, she did a repeat performance ot this royalty act tor the Sergeanettes Ball. lt's too bad she didn't get out from behind that Xylophone sooner. Jerry balinw No, that isn't an eight-hundred building over there: that's Jerry Dahms, the punch ending to a string ot three brothers who have kept San Diego High on top in sports for longer than Hoover likes to remember. He began his sports career as a Sopho- more in football and by the time he was a Junior he had become our leading tackle. This year he torsook the line position which would have guaranteed him a spot on the All-SCIF team and became quarterback. Taking over duties completely strange to him, he tinishecl the season as captain of the team and quarterback on the All-Coast League crew. On the varsity basketball squad he really hit his stride at the Beverly Hills Tourney, where he won a silver basketball and a second-string all-tourney berth tor his play- ing. Then he went into baseball as a heavy- hitting catcher. Dahms, though, refused to be benched when the year's sports ended. Having, trod the gridiron, the hardwood and the dia- mond, he finished by trodding the boards as a truly Admirable Crichton. Conrad J. The Scholarship Honor Roll of the Class of June 20, I947, has been compiled in the office of the high school. This record is based on the work of the five senior high school semesters. All pupils whose semester grades of A lsuperiorl number eleven or more are placed on the honor roll. A perfect record for the five semesters would be twenty A's, as the average pupil carries four subjects each semester. A few honor pupils are able to carry five subjects and thus accumulate more than twenty A's during their high school courses. Note: Pupils who enter with grades of A from other schools will have their A's accepted for the honor roll providing they make as good grades while in attendance at San Diego High School.
