Already, the greater part of the activi- ties of the class of l946 have taken place and slipped quietly into the past. What it was to be, it has become, it will soon exist, no longer as an organized active class, but rather only in the memories of the individuals who once were its vital parts. It will live also buried in the files, in those places where past events linger on to be reconstructed and reorganized into a new life of history. So our class will very soon be an historical thing. We propose, therefore, to take liberties with time and to imagine two little Hilltoppers of some far distant future class, two little nosey researchers, who will look back- ward at our own class. This book should reveal what they will find. f19Q2I1fei M5 F, a l1982 !,4 lfsf ' gm-KS These snapshots trom an old picture album compiled in I946, recall trom the enigmatic past a typical day with one ot San Diego's outstanding students, Bob Duemling. From then on, his time was spent bisecting angles tor that popular King ot the Co-eds' l-learts, l-lorace Kennedyq leading a merry discus- sfon in his World Attairs class: reciting some inspiring l-lamlet with the master himselt loolcing on trom aboveq or soberly considering a physics experiment with Mr. l-leilbron. Zell Goamcil In the same way that the investigators have perceived other person- alities, they turn now, slcipping the Council's activities until later, to the two student leaders ot both school and council in IQ46. Chuck Norman, whose deep voice was born to the microphone, was a man ot letters, talcing C. S. F. and baseball honors with equal ease. Lilce the Fall during which he presided as president. he was quiet and retiring. ln comparison, Bob Duemling was the personitication ot Spring with his bright smile and triendlv manner. These words sound noble to the little chroniclers, tor it pleases them to Icnow that even as long ago as I946, there was student treedom and representation in the school government. Sorting the tacts on the cards and recalling to lite the past, they learn that the Student Legislature was composed ot all the home room presidents and led during their terms ot ottice by the Fall and Spring vice presidents: those merry men ot politics, Johnny Sword and Don Lyons. The group was a linlc between the student body and the student government-a clearing house tor suggestions trom the homerooms, which were later relayed to the A. S. B. Council. During the year the legislature discussed problems concerning the tinancing ot the Student Union Building, the management ot the cateteria and lunch lines, and the need tor publicity and talent in the All-School Show. Then those ingenious I-lillers, complaining ot the heavy wooden doors which were installed during those days at San Diego I-ligh, sug- gested that the ottending blocks ot timber be lett open during school hours so that no Caveman would be pulverized it a door swung baclc and hit him. This is only one example ot the alert, imaginative minds which those representative I-lillers possessed. With such bright-eyed leadership, it was no wonder that the year ot I946 was distinguished. Its amazing history, gradually being reviewed through old notes, pictures, and tiling cards, is well worth the research. STUDENT LEGISLATURE - FALL Front row, Iett to right: J. Clancey, R. Sowyer, J. Berenso STUDENT LEGISLATURE - SPRING gcufi' aedmalian The Boys' Federation, led in the Fall by Manual Dalqis and in the Spring by Bill Bryson, was composed ot all the boys in school. That year, like its teminine counterpart, the Federation worlced hard planning and putting on activities. The pupils ot I946 were similar in many ways to those ot today, and their demands tor entertainment were just as treciuent. To satisty all requests, the boys devoted the major portion ot their combined brain worlc and talent to tiguring out new ideas tor assemblies. Some, including exchange assemblies, they presented to the entire student body while others Ithe athletic assemblies which the girls would no doubt have loved to seel were reserved tor a masculine audience only. Later, as already revealed on the tiling cards, those enterprising Cave- men added their ettorts to those ot the girls to put on and malce a success ot the dance Fall Fantasy. With an artistic touch characteristic ot all students ot San Diego I-ligh, even those ot long ago, the boys dragged in autumn leaves and, with colortul dash and verve, gaily decorated the boys' gym, which was used in those Pre-Student Union Building days tor school entertainments and dances. To prove that the minds ot its members could rise also to a serious level, the organization sponsored, with typical masculinity, the annual penny drive tor the Red Cross and by determined prodding collected more than the quota originally set, This was an important charity in that tirst post-war year when there was still tamine and suttering throughout most ot the world. To pronounce mild but ettective justice on the minor ottenses reterred to it by the police department, a Student Court was presided over in the Fall by Student Judge John Holloway with Jane Hussey ,and Dave Sellgren as assistants and in the spring by Fred Peirce with Dave Sellgren and Joyce l-lensley. The puzzling title dances magically before their eyes and seems to suggest great activity lo-ng ago. Then as they read on, it becomes clear that of all the organiza- tions once functioning on the l-lill, the Pep Squad was the most dynamic and the most indispensable. During the Fall, that group not only took charge of selling tickets, decorating for dances, caring for trophies, and putting up posters, but also made arrangements for a Homecoming dance, sold programs for football games, and sorted and distributed identifica- tion pictures. The members were the altruistic and willing workers of the school, devoting time, energy and ideas to school service. The fact that they attended meetings at 7:30 in the morning and remained hours after school indicates the responsibility which members had to assume. ln the Spring, one of the most original and long-remembered dances was given by this famed Pep Squad. Like its name, everything was Turn- about that night. Girls assumed the masculine, first by inviting their dates and then driving to their homes and picking them up. With cold-hearted deliberateness. the girls looked over and chose from the supply of men, while these latter individuals waited with hopeful, palpitating hearts to be Masked. From this dance it is indicated that the Pep Squad was never inactive but, rather, constantly alternating between official and social service. PEP SQUAD - FALL Front row, left to right: A. With minds open to suggestions and devoted to the student body's de- sires, the Activity Committee, led in the Fall by quick, sharp-eyed Joel Naive and in the Spring by Walter Ullrich with the impish tace, worked diligently to present to the I-Iillers the kind ot programs they liked and wanted. The committees not only handled all A.S.B. functions, but also assisted any organization to produce an assembly or dance which it had planned. For their hard work and little glory, the members well deserve their place in the tiling cards. Front row, left to right: I. Manza t C. Schellenberg, publicity. There is nothing more entertaining or more satisfying than playing the part of someone else. Most people do it unconsciously, or at least secretly: but the members ofthe Drama Club were allowed to make-believe legal- ly. They dressed up, paraded on the stage, gesticulated wildly and emitted speeches filled with tintillating wit or heart-rendering pathos as the situa- tion demanded. Their fellow students, who composed the audiences, ap- plauded or hoo-ted according to their opinion of the action and the play -but beneath their criticism, most of those below the footlights would have loved to be on the stage above. Just as the youths ot today loolc baclc on the past with inoluisitiveness, so many ot those I-Iilltoppers ot '46 let their eyes wander below the border to Mexico and South America. Members ot the Pan American Club went on excursions to the old Spanish sites around San Diego, discussed Mexican and South American customs, and gave a panel-discussion assembly tor the rest ot the school. The season, however, was one that was marked with victories. Mentor John Brose, coaching his last team tor the Cavers, obtained some ot the best tives in Southern California to compete with the Hillers. After conquering such stalwart teams as Cathedral High, Huntington Beach and Pomona, the Cavers went down in deteat, bowing to San Ber- nardino High in the semi-tinals ot the Chino Tourney. Taking this loss in stride, the Hilltoppers went on to deteat every team on their schedule until Feb. 8 when Grossmont High eked out a 28-26 verdict over the hard tighting Cavers. A week later, Hoover High's casaba crew invaded the Hilltop gym and whipped the home varsity, 48-36. That year marked the tirst season in many years that the Cavemen didn't meet the Cardinals in at least three games. Sparking the Hillers throughout the entire year was veteran torward Ben Cendali, who was among the league's top scorers and also- on the second all-league tive. Center Bob Grant was placed on the first team and guard Joe Castagnola on the second team. Tutored by Bill Bailey and led on the court by captain and center Johnny Sword. this year's Bee basketball team swept all competition aside with comparative ease. The lightweight hardwooders were unde- teated in non-league as well as league competition. They had two close calls, however, when they ran into unusually hot Hoover and Compton casaba crews: they won both games by one point in the last minutes of play. Unbeaten in tive league games, the hard hitting Hillers trouced all local competition by tantastic scores, Traveling to Pomona to participate in the Southland's biggest interscholastic baseball tournament, the Hilltop nine reached the quarter-tinals before bowing to an uncanny El Monte aggregation, 2-I, in one ot the best trays ot the tournament. Hoover High School's Cardinals then walked oft with the coveted trophy and the extra S300 bonus donated by the Hollywood baseball club, the tollowing week, however, San Diego blasted the Redbirds twice, I6-9 in the tirst encounter and 4-O in the second. When everyone had arrived, l.ee, with stern expression, would call the meeting to order, while the etticient secretary, Nancy Jo Fidler, recorded his words.
