146 ti17itieA- Sw! . . By DONNA CRANDALL Handling the gavel at the head ot the ASB Council tahle during the tall semester was Joe Alston, peppy ex-cheer leader. From the first meeting, Joe was in there, all eagerness, pitching to put over a successful program. VVith the entire Council hehind him, he was ahle to announce the re-opening of the Cave-lnn on September 21. From then on, hundreds ot students spent a leisurely hour atter school each weelc sam- pling colces and calces, hattling at ping-pong, and dancing to the music of the latest records. At the same time the ASB launched an extensive evening dance program. Clever Council memhers Don Reed and Danny Nordstrom made the Councilis dreams come true hy securing a lolue and White canvas hand stand for the SDHS Swing Band and hy presenting Cavetollc with a handsome wooden colce-har. With the loeginning of the haslcethall season, the Cave-lnn had to declare time out tor three months. Joe Alston then came through with his plan to huild a Student Union Building as a memorial to the men ot San Diego High School who have heen lcilled in the war. It toolc no time at all to convince Hillers ot the worth ot this idea, and plans were immediately hegun. A committee was appointed to draw up drafts ol the proposed huilding and vvorlc on ideas for raising funds tor its construction. Another hright idea ot the tall semester was the organization ot a truly demo- cratic Student Assemloly, to he run on the same plan as the United States Senate. Under Vice President Bud Johnson, the organization was instrumental in decreasing Hillerys long-time dissatisfaction with Mpartisanshipn in school politics. A rehirth tool4 place when the old pep squad got a shot in the arm and capahly toolc over the Hdirty WOTIK, , HIOUHCI school.
