JOHN ASELTINE, Principal The School at War —January, 1944, -found at San Diego High School about six hundred fewer pupils than in peace-time. Girl Hilltoppers out¬ numbered the boys about six to five. Most of the 18-year-old boys and many of the 17-year-olds had already gone to war. Many students were working on part-time jobs for school credit, but these and most of the others were more determined than ever to earn the coveted diploma of graduation. Many were carrying extra subjects in order to graduate ahead of time. Science and mathematics were the most popular subjects on the program because the Army and the Navy needed technical specialists. ROTC and physical education took on new interest for boys. Only girls applied for admission to college; boys centered their hopes on the V-1 2 and A-1 2 tests. Everyone at San Diego High School was trying to do his part to win the war.— John Aseltine, Principal
