I he gridmen started with the proverbial roar but were tamed in some measure by losses to Hoover and Sweet¬ water to finish in a tie for second place in the Victory League. In his first year at the Hill, Coach Bill Bailey took over the wheel of the pigskin ma¬ chine and moulded the Castle hefties into a promising aggregation. High point of the season was the big game when the Cards and Cavemen collided for the loop grid crown in the final tussle of the year. The Red Birds nabbed the encounter and the championship from the Hillers with a sterling pass play. triumphs to hang up one of their most successful seasons in recent years. Coach Bill Patten ' s eleven dropped a 7-0 heartbreaker to the Hoover jay- vees for the only loss of the year. Earlier in the season they had defeated Hoover by the same score. Junior Varsity Football Scores: San Diego 7, Brown Military 6; San Diego 25, Grossmont 0; San Diego 7, Hoover 0; San Diego 33, Point Loma 6; San Diego 6, La Jolla 0; San Diego 0, Hoover 7. Coach John Brose ' s Hilltop hardwood aggregation rambled to a 32-18 triumph over the Hoover cage crew in the first of a series of non-league basketball frays before Christmas vacation. The Brosemen also toppled a spirited alumni five, 35-28, and played numerous games with ranking serv¬ ice quintets. Victory League competition was slated to begin January 7. Coach Bill Patten ' s cross country team, hampered by the absence of Ralph Phillips and Clem Macevicz in many meets, compiled a drab record with only two wins to their credit and five losses against them.— Don Carter, Sports Editor CROSS COUNTRY Left to right, front row: D.
